This is really cool, looks in great condition. On a side note; how do cars fair over there for rust etc? Cars in the UK rust like anything, especially during winter. However when I was in Nigeria recently, they've got thousands of ancient cars; mk1/2 golfs etc; with no signs of rust - probably because its dry and hot there. I think the key is the lack of salt on the roads.

Replaced the prop-diff oil seal on the front diff of my Vitara.
Now it sometimes makes a crunching sound, sounds like the pinion gear isn't meshing with the ring gear. The weird thing is it only does it sometimes, when going in a straight line & hitting a bump it might stop for a second, and it doesn't do it in reverse.
I'm well aware not to use 4wd on the road, Ive been testing it by just locking the front hubs. I'm also aware that the backlash and pre-load should really be set when under taking something like this, I put the nut on where it used to be (its out by a couple of mm maybe, cant get it any tighter)
The only thing I'am wondering to salvage the situation is the input shaft has a bearing, when changing the seal this bearing came away with the shaft instead of staying in the casing. I just left this and assumed it would all go back ok, could this be loose in the box and causing the pinion gear to only sometimes mesh with the ring gear?

My vitara got very muddy one weekend and overheated, steam pouring out of the expansion tank.
Once I got a lift home I gave the rad a blast with the hose, its still a little muddy but seems usable.
Got the wheels bearings done @ a garage about 20mins (10 miles away) and it didn't overheat there or on the way back. Did some more work on the truck today and took it out for a quick spin and it overheated, let it cool a little bit and topped up the water in the rad and witnessed bubbles....HG I thought. Left it to cool down properly and now it seems ok again, no bubbles and took it for a drive to heat up and its still ok.
Stuck thermostat? Or HG fault?

My Vitara has manual locking hubs on the front of the car, from what I can see on American ebay these come with paper type gaskets. Would there be any reason not to use a rubber based material as opposed to the normal paper? I would think rubber is more durable...and as I go wading sometimes it would be useful to that a durable gasket for when I rebuild the hubs instead of having to cut out a new gasket each time, or should I just use some sealant?

As per title really, will try the local motor factors but is anywhere else likely to have it? ECP, GSF and Halfords don't list it on the web.

Christ how many people use tax exempt cars as daily drivers?! I bet its a very minor percentage of road users.
Don't people have more important issues to meddle with!
If tax avoidance is this issue there's plenty of other people to go after first before the people using old cars as a daily drivers. If emissions is the issue, aren't more emissions produced in a cars construction, then its life time on the road? Therefore people using older cars are actually helping...
