In the days when modifying retros was less restrictive side pipes appeared on many cars but its quite unusual to see side pipes other than American muscle or Caterham / kit cars etc. Wonder if the idea just died out naturally as less manufacturers built them as most people opt for tried n tested exhaust systems / performance upgrades and modified to suit a particular vehicle leaving the side pipe variant dead in the water. I acquired a stainless side pipe exhaust and not sure either to sell it on or work out best fitting method to tuck it under sill / would be great as stack pipe on pick up / 4x4 though

Slightly easier for myself as retired but still have normal stuff to do including gardening, shopping ,caring for sick wife but try to find car time in the afternoon depending on if its an indoor winter job or outside better weather job but its about planning the time you have. If the mojo wanes in car direction and have been tinkering 54 years with cars and never made a profit but never started out to i diversify with a mechanical project to keep the mind active / currently fitting electric motor conversion to retro Pashley three wheel adult tricycle whilst thinking of next car related job to get on with / everyone is different but our main common denominator is the love of retro cars and an addiction to buying used and new parts / modifying and being innovative as far as our skill set will allow.

Agree with biturbo 228 Kent away from the motorway is stunning. Suggest Sandwich Kent for true medieval interest along with nearby Canterbury while Deal, St Margarets Bay and Dungeness worth a visit in particular Dungeness for wild life, solitude, by gone fishing little cottages with the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway worth an hour or two of your time to see Dungeness from a different angle plus a fantastic cafe and two pubs to enjoy whilst looking at a fantastic old light house and not forgetting the remnants of our nuclear industry across the way. Enjoy your road trip wherever you decide to go. Wells and Stonehenge worth a visit as well.

Bought a Janspeed four branch manifold for Suzuki Vitara 1.6 around 2006 and had a Janspeed four branch for an earlier SJ 410 which coupled with an inlet with SU carb transformed the gutless wonder a tad

The unofficial retro apprenticeship is the self taught principles of owning / maintaining / enjoying retro cars over a long period. Myself i started in 1970 with an Austin A30 saloon in light blue with Speedwell goodies now rare and worth a fortune and steadily continued through the next 51 years never making a profit / probably made some losses / surprisingly only owned 60 retro cars in all that time but what a great journey of discovery. Never set out with any plan except to do as much work on any car as i could mostly to save money / money in essence i never had to save anyway. Met some amazing people with fantastic like minded cars / done deals far and wide / posted big and little parcels of spare parts worldwide and equally received my fair share of parcels over the years with that must have spare part. Only progressed as far as an old Audi after years of retro apprenticeship but its kept me sane and short of money. There is nothing better i can recommend. Tell us your retro apprenticeship story ?

Dorking Saturday afternoon small informal get together around Denbies Drive Denbies Vine Yard / some great cars out and about and few spectators socially distanced. Great to be out listening to the crackle of sports exhausts again. No photos though

Thats the theme i was trying to get over / using an item from one application for another and creating something unique yet functional. The phrase steam punk doesnt have to apply to every modification along those lines because retro cars and steam punk in general are worlds apart

Tried to alter and somehow deleted thread. Saw on fleabay advertised under steam punk was an interesting item that could be easily turned into a unique air intake that would be both functional and unique. Having watched Medusa build thread and how old parts are brought into play having seen steam punk orientated parts for sale on fleabay is there a connection where such interesting yet often off the wall parts could be incorporated into build threads that are going in a different direction to main stream retro builds. Any thoughts on this idea ? Think along the lines that beer barrels were turned into fuel tanks / brass was re engineered into interesting fittings and other items got a new lease of life through the builder of these creations imagination and determination to actually use that part Maybe not a retro main theme idea but for the individual seeking parts to modify that really stand out or are just wacky could the idea catch on where builds are having these steam punk orientated parts fitted ? Not sure if steam punk really describes the parts but going by fleabay its a word banded about to encompass most unusual items. No it doesnt mean cogs glued on to old crash helmets but the word steam punk is probably nearest to describe the thread idea. For the retro die hard who follows the well trodden path the idea of replicating parts from unusual sources might be a pill to hard to swallow ? As for it being possible to combine such parts to produce a cool retro refurbed car within the ethos RR stands for only the consistent change and skills make such things happen.

One i moved is a long term project and the owner knew its rarity and how many were left. Looked quite a bit of work but probably a great project to be involved in

I moved one last year / sure it was four wheel drive but this one was in a open barn / interior bitten by rats and body work quite grim. We dragged it out all four wheels locked solid and onto a hire transporter. Then it was taken to a proper workshop for long term restoration but covid then got in the way but ill see if i can contact owner for photos. He said the one he owned was quite rare thats why i seemed to think four wheel drive or maybe it was another engine fitted in that era ? He spoke of it being a rally car once but again only owner has all info needed

Some very interesting accounts of owning and maintaining a retro. I have a neighbour with a Golf GTi Mk4 who happily spends upwards of 200 pounds a month on a car in reality worth about a grand. This guy told me hes happy doing it / the pleasure from owning and driving makes the expense worthwhile. There isnt much of the original car left as he steadily replaces literally everything. Now its not economical motoring to do that for most of us but you will find someone who doesnt count the pennies on maintenance and parts.

I have at times through a long journey with retro cars which when i was young were actually new cars back then have acquired them when they needed money spent on them. Restored in a mild sense of the word a couple as an hobby never for profit and gone past the point of no return where whats been spent is more than its worth. This got me wondering are there any retro rides members who bought a retro in good faith / did a little work then either through choice or necessity spent more cash than the car would ever be worth then decided rather than take a loss just use it as a daily driver and enjoy the car and not consider its a loss maker in reality.
