I always treat buying a new motor as an adventure. I would far rather travel further to get a car that ticks all the boxes rather than get something that is not quite what I wanted but closer.
I wanted a specific colour for my daily SLK and couldn't find one on Auto Trader. I actually found 3 on Faceache Marketplace. One I rejected after the MOT history was a bit suspect but the other 2 fitted the bill. One was 40 odd miles away whereas the other was 125 miles or so. They were both much of a muchness condition and history wise but in the end I went for the one further away. Why? The dealer was easier to talk to, very helpful and inspired confidence. The other didn't. The extra distance simply wasn't a problem for me.

Couple of spots on the way home from town last weekend having dropped off the most hideous of all courtesy cars, a Vauxhall Insomnia... Bluebird lurking in a bodyshop yard. And a Transit with modifications in the style of a US Truck. Been trying to photograph this for a while now, but I have only ever seen it when I've been driving. It's certainly unusual, and whilst it may not be to everyone's tastes, I quite like what the creator's done. You certainly won't lose it in a car park!!

I think Mr MrBounce's one would be slightly smaller even Yes - it is!! Weighs about the same as a crisp packet too Mine's a Mk1, which was subsequently named the "Bronze" on the introduction of the Gold which was pictured. A rough guide is Bronze = Mini based, whereas Gold = Metro based. Confusingly, before the Gold was introduced, what was the Bronze (the Mini based one) could be ordered from the factory is 3 separate ways: Full kit was a Bronze, Half kit (i.e. partially built) was a Silver, and factory built was a Gold. Go figure. Not perplexing at all...

I watched a documentary on Netflix about him - never realised that the accident he had was his own fault. He'd been driving too fast in an effort to catch a plane.
A great shame but not entirely unexpected as I understand he hadn't been well for a while. We won't see another like him. Thoughts are with his family. RIP.

What is it with fibreglass cars and gold painted parts? When I took the Midas to bits all the front and rear suspension parts had been brush painted Hammerite gold. I blew up an angle grinder cleaning it all off with a wire brush. Much better without it though! Beware sorting fibreglass bodywork. What started off as a "few cracks" became a 1 1/2 year nightmare of grinding, Dremeling and undoing previous bodges. It becomes very wearing very quickly. PS I am in! You are bookmarked

I have been sorting out my late parents' affairs, trying to get the house cleared etc and have not been up to much garage-wise. Now the bulk of the difficult stuff has been done, I have been able to concentrate on a few things closer to home. So I got some more plates - I now have 31 so only another 20 states to go (don't forget that the Washington DC plate is not a state). 1972 North Carolina plate And the other 4 I've grabbed, from Arizona, Kentucky, Maine and my personal favourite of this bunch, a Motor Home plate from Pennsylvania. You can also see the "new" small workbench I've created from Dad's old office worktop. I like recycling stuff. And of course, the 2 drills are held in modified bits of drainpipe, also liberated from Mum and Dad's house (don't worry, the pipe was spare in the garden, ready to be thrown away or re-used. I re-used it!)

Those seats in the 1980s were a long way from subtle! I think the last time I saw one these was about 1991 as most were rusty by then... I thought they were fantastic.

Dan - I am so sorry to hear of your news. I can relate as I have lost BOTH my parents this past year (Covid also had a hand in my Mum's passing). The project has taken a massive back seat for a while so my advice is simply this:
Do the important stuff that works for you. The project can wait - it isn't important in the grand scheme of things.
And remember this - your rebuild thread is one of the most revered on here. We are constantly gobsmacked by your ability to cut rust out and produce amazing pieces of new body / chassis which you then melt together better than the factory ever did. As and when you get back to it, we'll be here waiting.
Take your time.
Dave

I think that you will get no bother from either a DeWalt or a Makita twin pack. One thing that I can tell you about Makita is that they have an absolutely excellent customer service centre. My cordless drill developed a fault, and they were brilliant in picking it up, replacing the gearbox and sending it back to me, all free of charge. On the flipside, because I couldn't find the receipt or email, despite me having a Credit Card receipt, Wickes wouldn't entertain it, despite it being only 9 months old.
I have inherited a Makita impact driver from my Dad and it's an awesome bit of kit. I have bought a set of Makita impact sockets and an appropriate adapter for £20-odd which work perfectly.
My friend has recently bought himself a DeWalt and swears by it, so I guess it depends on what deals are available. I can't speak for Milwaukee as I don't know anyone with one.

I use Avons on my SLK. Decent mid-range tyres that are comfortable and grip well. They seem to last well too.
