Fabricated fan mounts as I can't bring myself to put those plastic tie wrap type things through the new radiator....
I have had similar thoughts and recently a friend ruined a £1000 alloy rad with them as the edges of the fan housing jiggled it's way through some of the galleries.

I loved my old sportsnatch, was a 1.6, ended up a 2.2CIH keep up the good work - a great car! I used to have a hatch, unsurprisingly it looked a little different to that one Had a 2.2 in this one for a while many years ago too. I've just seen a GTE in white - hatch too. Have not seen one for 10 years minimum!!

Fair play mate. Just how quick is it compared to say a newer 535d bmw or similar? Its certainly a good bit faster than my friends M550D after 60 mph. Below that its hindered with traction issues. At the last TV event it beat the following (via calibrated laser speed trap) – with the new diff I'm hoping it will be a good 6 mph faster - unfortunately the next event is on hold - I'm ready to improve on my current PB (and class record) too. Max Gidney Merc 300D 174 1st Diesel Audi RS6 173 Lotus Evora 172 BMW M135i 170 Evo 8 168 Audi RS4 168 Audi RS3 168 BMW 335i 165 Jaguar F Type S 164 Audi RS4 164 BMW M6 162 BMW E90 M3 161 BMW M3 E92 161 E36 M3 161

Last Edit: Aug 15, 2017 16:27:30 GMT by maxypriest: ...got a bit carried away - 10mph faster would be 184! 5500rpm in top is 181 - i'd be very very happy with that.

Road test 2 OK - The Diesel jerk has gone. The tightened drive train or possibly the new tyres must have sorted it out – a major major major win. If there was one thing about the car that was the fly in the ointment it was this.
Interestingly this quirk used to mean that you had to be on the ball when driving the car at lower speeds or driving up slight inclines with small amounts of throttle. Now it just does not matter, the result being that you can drive normally and have a chat with her indoors (HID) rather than concentrating on the job in hand. It’s smoother, easier and quicker.
HID noticed immediately and said that it is much smoother than her Volvo V40. Absolutely made up about this development.
Unless I fit a Quaife ATB I’m not touching the diff again. For a road car STD the diff ratio is perfect and it’s now much easier to drive about with out going mental as you don’t have to account/drive around the sensitive throttle.
I have also wired up the speedo loom to a positive and ground. It works perfectly and the new odometer gears are doing there job – everything is rotating as it should and the needle sweeps smoothly as if it was factory fresh. I calibrated it against an iPhone GPS speedo app and its spot on now after some adjustment.
Interestingly there is a very marked difference between the way your velocity info is relayed to the driver; digital GPS vs a needle on a dial with regards to the absolutely comical way this thing builds speed. Obviously with the IPhone you get a momentary readout with a bit of lag; with the traditional set up you get a lag-less sweeping needle and a 1/10 of a mile odo rotating accordingly and its all rather analogy and very very pleasing. I will produce a vid when I can get some time on the local airfield!!!

Road test 1 Been busy scraping bitumen from the old floors at my house and then sanding them. Hard work, so very little time on the car. However I did manage to get it out for a few runs while picking up scraper blades and OSMO floor wax oils and wood dye (Georgian Medium Oak).
The new diff in conjunction with the bigger Conti 215/55/16 rear tyres results in around 33mph/1000 rpm, 80mph is under 2,500 and is lush for cruising to that beautiful turbo’d straight six soundtrack; it’s a great place to be.
I only went about 10 miles however one thing is immediately apparent (apart from the longer gearing) and that is a complete lack of diesel Jerk. IF - and that is a big word, this continues then I’ll be completely made up; it’s that much of a big deal.
The diff is as quiet as a mouse, leak free, the Poly bushes and uprated gearbox mount are transmitting very very slightly more NVH, however I’m very pleased with the result for the noticeable increase in drive train stiffness. Happy.
Rather pleasing and she drives a treat.
While I was putting the back seat back in I also added a couple of panels of Dynamat – can’t do any harm!

The picture above is a proper prop. The original plan was to get the old W210/260E prop shortened and modified with a large flange for the BIG ‘ol 110mm 8 bolt flex joint and then balanced. EASY.
…However, and this has always been on my mind – the prop centre splines and UJ are a bit weedy (especially since the little 90mm 6 hole flex has been given the sack), sure it has not shown any signs of failure (which I suspect would be just a big ‘bang’ followed by god knows what…) however the fact is that I have amongst my collection of Merc bits a R129 SL500 prop that has the same diameter tube but also larger beefy splines and a larger centre UJ (which is notchy, thus replaced). So I have gone for it, the prop is now a hybrid W210/W124/R129 jobbie and is very strong. As the plain section of the spline has gone up from 25mm to 30mm diameter I have also treated it to a new centre bearing after trawling the on line Meyle Catalogue for one that fits the 124 but with a bigger diameter hole – I recon it’s a 400/500E jobbie.
I greased up the centre spline section with some very HD anti seize copper slip style grease. This stuff is from the railway industry (free sample thankyou!) and is for huge load/shear applications, is as thick as bitumen paint and is like sh!t to a blanket – it won’t wash out of anything…
Bailey – Morris did the work on the prop and also fine balanced the whole assembly. Top people – Simon Gentle was my contact and completely understood what I was on about. Good pricing too unlike Parkinsons who ripped me off.
Length wise it is SPOT on, the centre bearing mounting adjustment slots are exactly 1/2 way in their adjustment range - and 100% spline engagement - Perfect. Interestingly while I was there they had a load of really weedy looking props that had been ripped to shreds. Honestly the tubes looked like new bog roll centres – certainly no bigger; from BMW’s of all things – the UJ’s looked like something you would fit to a steering column. Nasty.
While I was under the car I fitted a OE MERC front diff bushing – might as well while I have the overalls on.
Anyway - I won’t have to worry about the prop/diff assembly now. Fini.
Cripes – It’s just the brakes and sound deadening left to do…

New and old prop spline comparison, the picture is a bit decieveing - the splines on the SL500 UJ assembly are much bigger. New Diff front bushing

Damping and Control
Before I fitted the new Meyle HD transmission mount I thought I would firm it up a touch with some 20 shore polyurethane. The original plan was to just fill the top airspace and leave the bottom free, but as usual I went mad at the last minute and filled the whole bl00dy thing. It’s the mk3 version in the following picture. The G-box JUST fits the tunnel and the space between the top and the transmission tunnel roof is very tight – hence the various mount incarnations in the picture. To be honest the Mk2 version has been the best one so far.
The Mk1was terrible. It’s a 95 Shore job and rock hard and the car felt like a tractor from the initial start up and got worse from there.
I have only moved the car 20 yards in the garden (see the next post) however the initial thoughts are I may have gotten away with the Mk3 madness – start up has not shown anything untoward. Road test this week – the Mk2 may make a return... we will see.

About 3 years ago I sold my Grannies rotten but mechanical sound 1.6 (carb version – which apparently was very important detail) Corolla 4 door on Ebay – It had 27 Toyota stamps in the service book but no MOT due to the rot. I would have been v happy with £50.
We got the best part of £500 for it after some bizarre bidding war.
A Nigerian gent picked it up and good as gold handed over the notes and promptly binned all the beautifully filled service docs etc in the bin around the front of the house before loading the car up. Granny and I were stunned.
