How about anything for about 4k and then a shed-load of nitrous? By eliminating any kind of progressive controller, just a button for giggles, it'll feel even scarier! Have you been stalking me? Meet the GassyAlfa - GTV V6 with NoS. About to appear in print and on film. Up to 350bhp if you're brave... I haven't (yet!) but it sounds like a bit of a hoot! A mate of mine nitroused his Beetle and went from mid-12 second quarter miles down to mid 10's. It's just over double the OPs budget, but goes to show the potential. My 14-second Beetle (which would probably go 13's with practice), through various trades and collecting parts over years probably owes me £6k, and a little squirt should see it dip into the 12's. I did get a bargain on the motor tho!

Great story, and very nice looking car. I've always had a soft spot for SD1s, and a black Vitesse is up there on the list of "1980's cars that still look contemporary today". I'd like to see one with big (18" maybe) wheels in a Pro Touring style, with a large TVR engine!
On a related note, I had a cracked rotor arm many years ago on my Karmann Ghia, which developed a misfire only when it got hot. The misfire was so bad when it was hot that it cracked a head!

It is bright! Padded dash and elephants foot lights points at it being '74ish? What Orange is it - Clementine? My Orange bugs were a couple of '70's and a '71, but they weren't as vibrant as this one!
BTW, [shameless plug]I've got a lovely Moto Lita steering wheel that would go a treat in there... [/shameless plug]

I've somehow managed to miss this up til now. When the 2.5tdi in my Audi died again, I sourced a V70 motor. Even harder to fit as the Audi is north-south and the Volvo is east-west orientation! Changed sump, oil pick up and all sorts. One of the freeze plugs in the Volvo engine has a fitting for a pipe (around 12mm) that the Audi doesnt have, so check that. I was lucky in that the wiring was already there - only had to extend the wiring loom to the fuel pump and alter the dipstick tube. 140bhp instead of 115 was a nice improvement...

What to do with the elderberries? Ice cream is the first thing that springs to mind, either as a ripple or mixed properly as a flavour and colouring. You could also try making jam with a kick? You need to be a bit careful with elderberries, unripe fruit contain a toxic alkaloid and the stems, leaves and seeds contain glycoside which can form into cyanide and thus result in poisoning. Make ure you do lots of research on how to prep correctly and the berries can be used to make jams etc I never knew that! Who'd have though that a car forum could be so useful for other information! And who'd have thought that fruit could be so dangerous!

I think it was Bjornagain who recommended a lower wire speed and higher power when plug welding. I've had good results this way - too fast a speed fills the hole before its had chance to join onto the back panel.

surely the points thing only comes into it if it needs re-registering, which it doesn't. My ZX only has its original bodyshell and passenger door, everything else is new/rebuilt and did not need anything to do with points. No, it can be for change of address, taxing it, MOT, anything. Ask Mark (Blackpopracing) when they pulled the v5 for his Pop. He's currently rebuilding to BIVA regs.

Anything at Shakespeare County Raceway (not currently likely to be anything - thank you Cala Homes) but not sure about anything else. I'd like to do the Gathering - never been, but got to check holiday dates. Might do one day at Dragstalgia at Santa Pod, but it's not safe enough to have a 2 year old there overnight any more. Probably go to a couple of events at Loton Park as it's on the way to my static caravan!

The "No name car club" which meets twice a month in Stourbridge always has a nicely eclectic mix of cars from prewar brits to yank hotrods and J driftcars to carefully restored original classics. I've met a couple of rivet counters there, but they are everywhere! Steve Off topic slightly, but when and where are these meets? I need to get along to one!

I've been having a bit of a clear out of bits I don't really need in order to pay for bits I do really need to fix my engine.
First bit is my Moto Lita steering wheel. It's a Mark 4 dished model with polished spokes that I bought probably about 10 years ago for my '68 Beetle but it turns out that the boss is for a later (1974-on) car so I put it to one side to use on another project later. I know it fits watercooled VWs as it got used for steering an '80's Scirocco around our yard, and to be honest it looked pretty good! Leather is in good condition, boss is nice with no damage to the splines, horn push is present and correct. If it had had the right boss it would be on my car now, it's a really nice feel. It's not too large or small, chunky grip and very well made. I'd like £175 for it, including postage, or you can collect it from Wolverhampton or Kingswinford, West Midlands and I'll knock a bit off!
For some reason I can't upload pictures from my phone - I'll have a go on my laptop tonight!

I've been a bit concerned about my Beetle but this is quite reassuring if this is how it is applied. Like lots of VWs (and Land Rovers and many others) the floorpan, engine and gearbox have been replaced over the years. If this means it will be classed as a re-constructed classic and keep the age-related ID then I would be happy. Also quite happy to keep MOTing it. The way I read the reconstructed classic bit is that if you've replaced stuff over time, you're ok. If you've started out with nothing, then bought a floorpan at a show, a body off eBay, a mates dad's barn had a load of running gear from various breakers and so on, that becomes a reconstructed classic. The end result is exactly the same, but the route to get there is different. Personally, I can't see why it matters! If I build a Beetle up out of parts, I register it as the floorpan and that's it. If I have a nice, low miles, original but rotten 1967 beetle, and a restored floorpan from an aborted 1973 project for example, I should be perfectly entitled to build that car.BUT I'd expect to register it as a 1973 Beetle, as the floorpan carries the ID. as long as I've kept a balljoint beam, a Beetle gearbox and an aircooled flat four VW motor, does it really matter where they came from? Sorry, Sunday morning ramble!

measure 20 times weld 1 time CLASSIC car builders oath..... "I promise not to mess up the expensive repro panes....that NEVER FIT" Not sure if I've already said this one: When fitting repair panels, trim the panel down as small as you can get away with, leaving as much original metal as possible. Firstly the original metal is usually better quality, and secondly when the repair panel rots out and needs doing again, you can just trim slightly higher, removing your previous weld line. If you've fitted the entire repair panel you can't do this!

Those would work! Might put a little extra stress on the gearbox though! When I put slicks on my old beetle it made launches much more consistent. The 85bhp 1600 got 60' around the 2.0 mark every time rather than the 2.0 to 2.5 second 60' it was doing before. With the 185bhp 2276 it would regularly 60'in the high 1.5's!

ouch not good, defo a 13 in that with that terminal and being rwd Yeah, 60ft times over 2.1 seconds are poor for a Beetle - they do launch well. FWD is a different kettle of fish, which is why turbos work so well on them. Drive it off the line and wait for the boost to build! Vee Dub Racing and Mk1 Keiran on YouTube have lots of videos of FWD cars, mainly at the Pod. Worth having a look and see what their set ups look like?

get a bike yer pazy curse word! 3.5 miles is even walkable. I could get a bike, there's even a staff bathroom at school with a shower in it, but you're right, I'm a lazy ! And herein lies the problem. We're a society that wants the easy way out, and won't change until we're forced to or the existing way is replaced with something easier. If electric cars has really efficient solar chargers, and induction charging points in parking spaces, people would be happier to go for them. No need to physically plug them in but constantly having access to charging makes life much easier and convenience = sales!
