No photos yet, but we've dropped the body back onto the floor pan and stripped the rest of the curse word out from under the bonnet - radio, wiper motor, steering column and wiring - and started to look at door fit. They aren't good... The car has been hit in the front, hard, at least once. I've got a feeling that the shell might have a twist in it, but the biggest worry is that when the doors open they both drop, one by about an inch(!), and it's not in the hinges. Spent some time trying to square it up but I think we're going to have to jack up the body just under the a post bottoms and see what happens to the door gaps. Could be interesting...

Foose E Type looks great in the flesh. Wheels and all. Outstanding. [jealous] you can really go off someone! [/jealous] I like it too, in photos obviously! I didn't particularly like Foose's take on the bus or the Beetle he did, but most of his builds are good, if a little formulaic now - big wheels, low on aftermarket suspension, crate motor with chrome stuff, tuck in the bumpers and lose some trim. Nice to see a different base car.

Dez, you've got to take the truck in for its recall when it's done! And please video the reaction...
I know there aren't any airbags any more, but it'd be brilliant to watch!

Nice one Rob! If you're going solid but patina, the black transport primer on the wings gets surface rust pretty quickly, so once it matches the body just give the whole thing a coat of wax to stop it all getting worse. Obviously paint underneath them though!
I don't know how complete the oval is, but I've got a pair of sloping headlamps off the '71 - we're going back to the proper upright ones so they're just sat in a cupboard at school. They've got Cibie lenses, which I've never seen before, and look complete although the rings are rusty. I suspect they're late 90's repro US-spec sealed beam ones that the lenses have been changed on.

Photo as of the end of the day: And view from my side door - the head teacher from the school next-door has just had his '71 painted - unusual two tone colour split, but it looks great! Our kids will be rebuilding that one too!

So, what to do about it? Well after spending 15 minutes explaining why a panel made in Taiwan (who I think drive on the left) for a British company (and we definitely drive on the left) is only available in LHD configuration, one of the lads removed the plate from the old pan half and one of the girls made a replacement one out of 2mm plate - the idea that the students have worked out is that if the original pressing was level with the bottom of the ribs, and the ribs are 3.5mm deep, with the plate being 5.5.mm thick that puts the top of the plate 2mm above the top of the pan. She also made a rather clever card template for a thicker plate that will weld onto the underside of the floorpan and curve around the ribs but still allow for a decent thickness of metal to strengthen the floorpan and tap into for those m8 bolts! Genius!

Second day back at school after half term and we're cracking on with the pedal box reinforcing plate. From 1967-ish onwards, VW used a new and improved pedal assembly, that while it didn't look as nice, allowed for a small bracket to bolt into the floor to keep it stable under hard braking. With 1500cc and 44 whole raw snarling horsepower, I guess they decided that the brakes would get a much more vigorous work out and needed beefing up... Early pedals: Late pedals - note small bracket: Now, just bolting it to the floor would never do; no, what was needed was a 5.5mm thick plate welded to the top of the pan, with holes tapped to accept two m8 bolts to brace the pedals! Overkill? Well, yes, but VW like to re-engineer things for fun, so the floorpan got a recess pressed into it for this plate to be welded into. You can see in this picture that the new floorpan doesn't have this pressing - it's a shame that these www.vwheritage.com pan halves, while excellent in every other respect, don't have the pressing, and it's also a shame that I didn't spot it before the kids welded the buggers in...

Always a gamble buying “running” rotary engines. Generally you can consider yourself fortunate if a motor yields one good housing. That said, the last three I opened yielded none 🤣🤣 Do you think that's why Team Boosted on YouTube built a single rotor engine? Simply because that's the number of housings they'd got?

As a hardcore Cal Look VW guy, I check out www.cal-look.no/lounge every day. However, while it used to be a check it several times a day type forum, you could check it once a week and still not get as much content as daily even five years ago. I still check www.eurodragster.com once a week, and the classifieds on www.thesamba.com, but other than that, it's YouTube and here that give me my car fix.

Grizz, my dad managed to set fire to the front of his overalls while welding. He said he wondered why there was smoke coming up under his welding mask, then looked down and saw flames! He also set fire to the accumulated paint dust around the motor of our compressor with angle grinder sparks!

I'm lucky in that my teaching position since last September comes with a fully equipped workshop, so little jobs don't have to be done at home on the drive, I can just stay after school for a couple of hours. Bigger jobs like my various resto projects will take longer because I'm due to be moving further away from the unit that my Dad has taken over from me. Prior to becoming a dad myself I used to book a couple of nights and a Saturday daytime over there, but that hasn't happened for a couple of years now. When I'm in the new house I won't be doing much car stuff out of school until the renovation is finished.

Half term update! Well, with a bit of persuasion for the year 10s to have a go, we've got both pan halves welded in! Year 10 were a little bit grinder-happy, so trimmed a hit too much off the edge of the pan that welds to the spine, but there was still enough to weld to and keep it solid. Youthful exuberance and trimming to the wrong side of a scribed line... After the holiday we've got to get the front of the drivers side pan half modified to take the reinforcing plate that picks up the pedal assembly in place, then grind down a couple of the bigger welds before a bit of epoxy primer and seam sealer. Then we're onto the body! Might get heater channels in by Christmas...

At school I wear the Aldi work wear trousers and Lidl steel toe cap boots - I have to wear a shirt but I'd like to go for polo shirts like the PE staff. As @projectbobcat said earlier, the trousers aren't fully fireproof and I have got a couple of tiny weld burns in them. I generally wear a white lab coat or a proper welding jacket which looks like sheepskin - it's not branded as far as I can remember. The students are given overalls which are cotton, brands vary but I think the latest ones are Dickies. At my unit (which is much colder than my classroom) I wear overalls because they keep the cold off my back, which helps stopping an old back injury flaring up, and Aldi rigger boots, so I can fit more socks on!

Grizz, I think you might be overthinking it a bit. It doesn't really matter if the new body is monocoque or not - it's the chassis that's going under that needs to be a frame. You can mount a monocoque body over a separate frame, even if it needs great big holes cutting in it. Think of the lifted RX8 shown earlier!
The body I was planning on using was a monocoque, but I was going to cut a floorpan shaped hole in the floor, drop it over the floorpan and the build up some box section rails in the shape of the heater channels that would weld into the body.
