Suprised nobody has mention this yet... Once the pensioners shopping trolley of choice, a sea of them in every Tesco car park, or burnt out on local wasteland... The mighty Metro!

My Mk2 Granada 2.8 Ghia X. I picked it from a farmer near Bury st Edmonds for £300. He had about 20 and his other half was making him get rid. That would have been around feb 2010. I drove it for a year and a bit, adding Granada Cosworth alloys and doing little bits here and there. The gearbox went bang a few days before I was about to go on a 4 month detachment so for some reason I told the recovery bloke to keep it. Biggest regret of my life. It was a good old bus and only let me down once when the propshaft doughnut disintegrated. it not been taxed or MOT'd since it expired in 2011 so i reckon its gone round the banger track My MG ZR was something I've since regretted selling but that I think is mainly down to how utterly unreliable the Mk5 golf Gti that replaced it has been. It never let me down, handled like a go-kart and seemed quick for a 1.4. A much better hot hatch than the golf. traded it in for £150, I did see it with a new owner a few times afterwards but I reckon its been scrapped now How long ago did you sell the ZR? Reg looks familiar, I even owned it or owned one with a very similar reg

My dad did it throughout my childhood, always bought a car cheap and kept it on the road as long as possible with minimal maintenance, as soon as it would cost to much to repair/mot it got scrapped and another car purchased.
If it wasn't for my mrs turning her nose up and wanting something more modern as a daily I'd still be doing the same.

To be honest if your working on cars often I don't think you ever have enough tools.
I'd like to think I have a pretty large tool collection for a diy mechanic, probably around £4grands worth, but I still start jobs and realise I don't have a tool suited for the work I'm doing and have to go and buy one.

To be honest I still see a fair few 90's pugs around here, I think they've survived quite well due to the galvanised body? Another car I used to see loads of, probably because there was a Proton dealership just around the corner, is the Proton Persona. Virtually all gone now though.

There is other ways, I've found the first owner of my Corsa gsi and a couple of owners of my Clio by searching for their names on Facebook that I found on old invoices.

Followed one of these today Which made me realise how uncommon they are now compared to a few years ago, still plenty of 45's around yes but i would actually say I see more of the "wedge" shape 400's on the road than the bubble.

Loving all the hot hatches, if I had the space I would do the same I remember my mate's 1.8 16v Clio, was quick car and gave my 2L Corsa GSi a run for its money back in the day. Thanks, yea I'm pretty lucky with space, my biggest problem is lack of time to get anything done on them though! Only downside is three of my four are kept outside and the XR2i is kept in my mums garage. When the money's there I'm going to get my garage extended a few extra feat so I can atleast get one more tucked away.

That punto gt brings back memories as i worked on them when they were new as well as the punto sporting i think they were called??16valvers?? I must admit the gt"s went very well... I've always loved the shape of the mk1 punto, still do now. I don't mind doing a bit of welding but that one was just to far gone. I'll own another one day but the GT's are getting rare and expensive now.

Oh and I did a bit of digging/stalking on Facebook for some previous owners names from the history file. Found one chap that owned it back in 2008, he sent me some pictures Gutted it's lost its original turbine wheels though.

Did a few more small jobs on the Clio today. First one was sorting the front grill out. It had just been chucked in the boot when I bought the car, god knows what someone had done to it but I'm pretty sure plastic shouldn't bend like this naturally? But after applying a bit of heat I soon bent it back into shape.. And after a quick prep and a few coats of satin black soon had it looking like new again Next up was replacing the bonnet support cable. The original had snapped Drilled out the old rivets and replaced it with a nice new one Also gave the bonnet vent and bracket a fresh coat of paint but not pictures of that.

I was back weighing in steel today and there was another retro at the bottom of the pile; jag sag by Dave Campbell, on Flickr Dave It's depressing to think there is probably very little wrong with most of those cars.

Dvla and car parks seams to be a grey area.
A few years ago a mate who had no driveway parked his car in the pub car park opposite his house when the tax expired, he knew the landlord and had permission to park it there but the dvla still came round and clamped it.
Another car dealer friend drove a "stock" car to McDonald's for his lunch, removed the trade plates out of the window once parked in the car park in fear of them being stolen, only to return to his car half hour later to find that had also been clamped. Turned out the dvla clampers had also drove into mcdonalds for their lunch and it pinged up as Untaxed on their camera's so they clamped it.
Not sure if residential car parks come under the same laws.

Finally got the new bonnet and bumper back from the paint shop and fitted today. Still got the headlight trims, foglights, grill and new old stock indicator lenses to fit.

Did you get to speak to the owner? Guessing it is for sale then and not one of these "I'll restore it one day" stories?

Vauxhall are still at it now, Mk4 Astra diesels are the same, have to remove the driveshaft to get the starter out.
