Opened up the old gearbox we removed from Harold We kept it going with 2 oil changes through the year, drained the oil and it looked ok, this was around 5th gear when I took the cover off. That and the friction plate we swapped suggested we wouldn’t have got too many more miles before we had issues

Toms racecar got some love, partly because the VWDRC championship starts in just over a months time, and partly because he turns 17 at the same time and will want to be driving it all the time

I’ve heard of eBay places that’ll do it by email. He’s off work at the mo with hip issues, so wondered if they did what they claimed. I mean, I'm not sure there’s a huge market for display-less cassette decks anymore

Mate has bought a 2003 Omega, but the radio is locked.
Can anyone recommend a place to get a code
TIA John

Had a knock in my workvan too, Luckily for me, 3rd party insurance agreed payment in lieu of repairs, I’ve found/bought all the bits I need, just need to sort getting a old stock door painted and fit it all together and swap over. Good luck getting it sorted Running round currently with a slightly janky temporary door, with matte Montana rattle can paint job

Spoke to mate Frankie, he is back painting again now, so he’ll be sorting my door for me. He wanted something to confirm the colour and get it matched. Didn’t particularly want to take the filler cap off and hand it over, So I gave the spare white door a wipe over, knocked some of the bigger rust blebs off and blew it over with the Montana Black Cardinal paint I’d got for race van. It’s not a quality job, the paint can nozzle dripped and I did virtually no prep, but it’ll do for a few weeks, and confirms that’s the colour I wasn’t to paint RaceVan So removed the door, and checked the new door Then fitted my temporary door Biggest thing is the matte finish, but the colour is actually pretty close. The broken rubbing strip draws your eye away from the paint as well Then I cut a hole in dented door And took that and photo of the colour on the respray paint tin to Frankie, He’ll sort the paint out and then I’ll drop him the door round to sort and paint. Came home and stripped the door, will clean and check everything over the coming weeks ready to refit.

Not sure on painting yet. Haven’t spoken to Chris for a long while, so I’ll probably just get it painted locally. I think a mate is starting up again on his own so probably ask him. Only reason for fitting white door is to keep it all secure whilst door is removed, I’ve nowhere to park van inside, so I can at least lock it up whilst messing with the red door. So I could strip and rebuild door on a bench and at leisure, and if I break clips or whatever I can sort some before fitting. And yeah, no effect on no claims, but premium will increase

Thanks to gtviva I now have a door, He also sorted the part numbers for the other bits I need, and pointed out so new old stock moulding strips on eBay I found the one for the door in the UK, the blank bit that would say LS or merit that fits in the door panel came from Essen So I’ve got all the bits I need (with the exception of any broken clips when I swap stuff) Insurance engineer called and said I had 2 options, write it off or they’d offer payment in lieu of repairs. This means I can fix it, it won’t be recorded as write off or anything. He offered a bit over £1000, not sure if I’d have beeen able to argue with him, but to be honest it seemed a fair price so I accepted I’ll fit the door to the van to check it fits, then get it tidied up and painted and I can swap all the parts over myself over a weekend. Can fit the spare white door whilst I sort it so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem

That photo is 2 years ago, but yeah, it’s not terrible but also not as good as the one on there (dent aside) I used to have a dash cam in one of the vans, and was thinking I should probably fit one again. Just don’t really like them as it adds more clutter, I’ll carry on thinking about it for now

I had a similar thing with our mx5 which was driven into while parked, firstly never let them take it, chances are you'll never see it again, while you have possession of the car you have the upper hand. Although they will tell you all sorts of rubbish about having to do what they want remember you are the damaged party and they have a duty to make reasonable recompense. I got a quote from a local garage (around £1000) and on agreement that I would accept this in full payment for repairs and no further liability they just sent me a cheque for the full amount. ours was a damaged bolt on wing so easy enough to repair (I managed to knock 95% of it out and filled the rest) being plain black it was easy enough to re paint the whole panel with a couple of pro rattle cans. total cost was around £50 plus a day or so of my time. I think that’s what I’m hoping for in reality. Can’t imagine their approved Bodyshop being happy working with stuff I’ve supplied anyway. But if they go that way, I can get a door, get it sprayed in advance of removing and swapping over. So hopefully can sort with very little downtime. I do have a spare door, which came from the estate, but it has some rust on it.. but could maybe swap that on whilst I reskin the existing door. So I have options I’ve been in this position a few times, and as said insurance companies become more and more resistant, and the whole thing becomes more and more of a pyrrhic victory, so I’m going into this with the view that if they’ll agree to a payout, I can sort bits at leisure and fix it

Bum hats on the bump, progress everywhere else. Be careful dealing directly with their insurance company- once yours are involved probably best to go with them. Finding somewhere local who you trust and getting a price might work. How far away is he who cannot be named ? If it’s just the door then sourcing one and having sit painted up ready to fit might be a day trip? James My insurance assigned a repairer in Acocks Green (about 2 hours away) who wanted to collect the van and agree repairs with my insurance company and do the work. My thoughts on that are, it’d get taken away, shunted round the yard for a month while people worked out that the bits needed would require some effort to source (by now the inflated hire van costs would exceed the repair costs) panic, realise it’s also picked up some damage in their yard and write it off! The 3rd party insurance have agreed to work with me (so far). So my thought is, the cost to strip and rebuild a door will be the same similar, the cost to prepare and paint may be a little higher (as there will probably be storage dings to sort, but they should also have a cost for reworking a panel etc) and the cost to fit will be about the same. So if I can find the approximate cost of the bits before Monday then it should be relatively easy to agree. Secondhand/old stock bits is X Standard repair costs Y Well that’s my thought anyway? gtviva has a door skin, or I’ve seen a whole door on eBay. Hoping I can find a good secondhand door molding strip…. if not a new one, as they were used on the hatches, estates and vans But the rear 1/4 one is going to be elusive as they are van specific The cars had a relief at the front for when the door opens The vans don’t

It’s been a while, with working outside and life distractions (and when it’s windy or raining or sun zero even imaginary distractions sometimes work ) progress has been slow. I removed the front lawn and replaced with stone so I can park the white van in the only place that allows me to be get it level-ish Which means I can park work van where it doesn’t dig holes in the garden. Struggled with the work van starting when it was really cold, went through the glowplug system and have currently ended up with a small momentary switch operating the glowplug relay (and the entire Isuzu glowplug ecu has been bypassed. I also bought a Ford mondeo/escort td glowplug relay to reinstate in its place. This is simpler, with 6 connections; battery, glowplugs, ignition, starter, glowplug light and gnd. It holds the glowplugs and light on for 15secs, and then holds the glowplugs on for another 15secs after starting (or hopefully it will when I got it) Have been working on racevan, got the engine in, and dropped the subframe and clearanced it to get the engine in the right place. Got hold of some 5mm steel plate and some engine mount bobbins but not got around to making them yet. Also when positioning the engine, the turbo would foul on the steering rack, so I bought the cheapest tubular manifold I could find (because it will need modifying anyway) and at £76 for brand new, I knew it would need work. It appears this is for a Passat so the positioning is different. I need to sort the engine mounts and then I can sort position. But looks like if I move the turbo down a bit, it will work. Even with the internal wastegate Workvan has been trundling along, the tyres on the 16s really didn’t inspire any confidence when it got icy, so fitted some winter tyres to the alloys, and really happy with how it looked for the winter The stereo kept playing up and not connecting Bluetooth, so I’ve replaced that with another Blaupunkt ;the same as the one in the lupo) and I bought a replacement dab aerial too as the one fitted snapped in the extreme cold we had in December. Then last Thursday, I pulled away from a roundabout and the car alongside in lane 2 decided to merge into me He didn’t admit liability, so had to start going through the motions with my insurers, the underwriters assigned a garage in Acocks Green (about 2 hours away) who wanted to come and collect the van. I ignored them But I’ve now been contacted by the 3rd party insurer accepting liability and wanting to sort with me directly. I’m now waiting to speak to the engineer/assessor to sort things. But I’m going to need a new door and to try and find the door and side panel moulding trims… which may prove tricky!
