Not car related, but I got rid of the grass in the front garden… Can park cars on it now, which is car related Now that’s done I can get back to car stuff Looks good. I've been told I'm not allowed to do this. I‘d killed the grass on half of it by parking the Fug on there, the car cover blocked all the light. It was starting to get pretty muddy with all the rain recently which helped to convince us to do it

Just over a month since last post, I started writing something and then managed to delete it So wrote this elsewhere… apologies if it’s a bit too wordy Originally was going to use the octavia loom with the ecu, this would mean i would have to use quite a lot of the octy, including the pedals and clocks. I started by unwrapping the loom and paring out the unwanted cables for lights etc. it all got a bit overwhelming though, there was a lot of extra wiring/complexity I didn’t need And since I had the speeduino, that seemed the way to go Having made that decision the whelm-ratio was restored. I took the bits of the loom I now needed; Coil wiring Injector wiring Inlet air temp sensor Coolant sensor Crank position Throttle body (though this needed a different plug) The AUQ is drive by wire which won’t work with speeduino, but an AGU cable throttle body bolts straight on, currently I’ve only wired the position pins I made a bit of a loom at home, because I’m doing it all wrong (like normal ) I couldn’t make a proper loom as I don’t know where I’m going to route stuff, so I just connected stuff up leaving the wires as long as possible. I pulled the engine and box out of the van and dropped on a pallet just in front of the octavia, connected my loom, connected the fuel lines and wired the fuel pump and tried to get it to run…. Which it wouldn’t, I had no spark So having spent most of my available time moving the engine and box with no space around it in the shed I packed up for the day. When I bought the speeduino kit I also bought the speedy sim test board, I checked my ecu again and I was definately firing the coils on the test board, so I got the impression it was something silly but couldn’t find what. Tried again on the Sunday, a bit of testing showed the 5v to the coils was floating, I could see 5v when coils were disconnected but it went as soon as I plugged a load back in. Then it rained, biblically! So that was that. In the week I had a look at the speeduino, I was thinking I’d probably got a dry joint or something, but whilst checking noticed jumper j1 was missing. Which is the jumper to tie the coil outputs to 5v or 12v I then used the speedysim and pinned the coil part of the loom to double check, which could still be done inside, in the warm, with tea And then at last I actually got a time/weather window and had another go With the engine/box now home I used the fuel pump on the Fug, with return back into the filler I’ve not put a map in for this, just set the engine characteristics in tuner studio, obviously the map needs work. I’m going to add cam sensor and then I can get it to run sequentially instead of batch fire and wasted spark as it is currently, have modified the cam wheel, but need to work out when it will see the edge also need to sort map sensor and boost control. But it’s a good start

Yeah I’ll watch that, probably in 6 months when I’m bored and there is nothing better to do, but I’d still watch it eventually

I watch that video and the engineer in me finds it interesting, but I can’t stop myself thinking how much better it would be with a bellowing 5 pot. I wonder if kids now will be able to see past that and embrace EV? Without the same memories of UR Quattros etc Black Current 4 is racing in VWDRC pro, and it’s an incredible thing, pushing boundaries all the time… but I’m a Neanderthal and think it needs an engine

Few bits of rust coming back through on the Astra, so this is definitely the right way to do it

DarrenW - he posted pics of his golf recently on somewhere - instagram or maybe even here? Clearly photoshops. He tried to tell me it was at RR Gathering this year, but I saw no evidence of that. He turned up in a BMW…. So sounds sketchy

Hello, I have a mk3 Astravan as daily, I did a engine swap about 18months ago. And have put about 20k miles on the Isuzu replacement. Now it’s getting cold again, I have a cold starting niggle. When it’s cold I have to cycle the glow plugs a few times. Not a huge problem, but with the Isuzu swap I fitted the glow plug relays and control. The controller is a Transtron QOS-5 and has 7 wires, one of which I suspect is a temp sensor as you can hear a relay click, and the time varies, when hot after 1sec, when cold it never stays on more than 1 second after the glow plug light extinguishes. I can find very little info on line about the functions, and that combined with a level of apathy and knowing how to get round it means that after all this time it’s still there. But just wondering if anyone knew anything about it? The unit has 7 wires on the plug; Black Brown/white Brown blue Blue Black/yellow Blue/white Red/yellow I’d guess; switched live, ground, wire to each relay, wire to glowplug light, which is 5 Thanks in advance John

Not much to report Work van got another oil change And an MOT, which it passed no drama Ive added just over 37k miles to it now, it’s starting to get some rust bubbles low down, and a bit on the front of n/s rear arch will need looking at soonish. I ordered a few cans of Montana black to see if I could get a close-ish match for race van. Bloody Mary is much too light, Hot lips is a bit too light Cardinal is a bit too dark But I think Cardinal will look closest to work van, it doesn’t have to be exact, and I like spraying with Montana, can touch up with cans when I sort arches etc, so the difference in colour is ok Not sure how many cans I’ll need for the whole van though? Other than that I’ve been working on wiring

As above, thanks for another brilliant event! Are pictures forbidden this time or was taking pictures forbidden? Usually there are at least five threads with gathering pics within the next 24 hours? No, but collectively everyone there decided to live in the moment, you should have seen it, there wasn’t a smart phone in sight!! I didn’t take many photos, the lens on my phone is scratched so the effect is similar to taking photos on a potato, whilst this is undoubtedly retro it’s not a great experience That, coupled with wandering around with Darren who had a proper camera and does car photo things. Friday night was cold, after the summer we’ve had I was catch you out cold, that coupled with having a child who can drink, and being old enough for prostrate checks… means having consumed beer I need to get rid of it, not wanting to get up because it’s cold means lying in my sleeping bag wishing for an en-suite! This was repeated again on Saturday night (they say you can’t teach a old dog new tricks!) Anyway, the weather, my bladder, my consumption of alcohol, and my decision to spawn a child all those years ago are in no way the responsibility of the gathering…. But I did come home tired! Undoubtedly less tired than those who spent months planning, then weeks organising and finally days and hours problem solving and ensuring it was an event that surpassed previous events. I was worried that some of the magic of the Gathering was due to Shelsley Walsh, bit though different was equally compelling. The quick 60 on Saturday we watched from the chicane on the back straight, we spent all day in one location and could see about 80% of the track. The racing was captivating and was absolutely enough. The tat auction was as ever hilarious, there was a band booked to play, it must have been strange for them to watch idiots bidding on junk in the cold whilst they waited for an audience to play to. Sundays show was possibly only lacking the vista from up the hill of the static show, the show itself felt more accessible as everything was closer. I don’t think it’s fair to compare, as it would be like comparing apples to oranges, but was a brilliant event, and again thanks to those who made it happen. But you’ll have to just take my word for that as I didn’t take any photos

Not updated in a while, Since the last update we’ve had BugJam, Greenlight Nationals and VW Action. Tom has been finding his feet, need to start trusting his runs a bit more but he’s got through to second eliminations in a couple of rounds. Rhys won the Greenlight nationals, was some really close racing from both Tom and Rhys in that round At VW Action we swapped Toms tyres front to back, they were fitted at start of season, fronts had 6.5mm tread, rears were still on 8mm It’s also had another oil and filter change, just because it is a bit abused. And this weekend we went to Mallory Park for the Gathering, another great weekend Next weekend is National Finals, then we have some maintenance planned and will be time for an MOT
