Cheers guys
Good news, the first of the engines I've stripped has a really nice condition bottom end. Clearly been rebuilt and to be honest could have run as it was if wasn't changing a load of bits. Crank has had a minor grind before, but enough meat to take to -0.02". Journals are so good that am tempted to just put new bearings in.
Other good news is they're slightly later blocks so much stronger main bearing caps and cam bearings.
Hopefully break the other one down tonight.

Have started measuring everything up ready to take over to the machine shop and sadly the crank has already been ground to the max oversize bearing size. The solution, buy more engines! Two for a tenner, both still turn over and in inlet manifolds and carbs are worth a good £50-100 alone. Will get these stripped tomorrow evening, hopefully one will have a usable crank! One problem remains though, I'm running out of space for spare engines, and this isn't all of them...

Awesome! Good on you guys for just heading out there and getting involved - inspiring stuff.
Can't wait to see how fast he manages to go. Are they saying out there to keep tuning or heading back later in the year?

Good luck with the sale mate, such a shame but certainly the sensible choice. Just wish I had the cash/space/time/energy to take it on!

So after a winter hiatus involving fitting a new kitchen and immobilising myself via a trapped nerve I finally got down the unit for some playtime for the first time this year. It wasn't a long session, but the Capri still fires up and runs, and the bonnet is now off ready for a respray following much swearing due to the blue paint not adhering onto the cream of the bonnet bulge - needless to say I'm paying my paint man instead of doing it myself this time! In other news, the shiny bits have started turning up ;D (though I now have no money) First up the forged rods and ARP bolts from WMS Racing Why forged - well because I'm hoping to have a redline of 7500rpm - which would make a mess of the standard ones, even if they were polished and shot peened. Next the light weight, billet steel flywheel from TTV. This is actually the second one as the first never arrived.... thankfully DHL took responsibility so got a replacement! It's 5kg, verses the stock 8kg one, but the difference in inertia is way bigger than the 40% weight reduction, and that's what matters when it comes to improving the engine response. And why an expensive billet one? Let's just say I like my feet and I don't trust a cast one that's had enough machining to get it down to 5kg! And finally for this post, carbs. 44IDFs to be exact. Why these? Well they're more tuneable than DCNF's, and more compact than IDA's. Size wise I need to run around a 38mm choke which means a 44 is about the smallest carb I can get away with. Tripple sets of carbs are pretty rare, downdraft ones even more so, 44 IDFs even more so. So I have 2 matched pairs, had to ship one pair in from the US to get for fair money - sadly I've not found an exact match, but both pairs are Made in Italy types, and appear to be the same on first inspection. Full service and jet changes required, but nothing too difficult. Still keeping an eye out for a closer match.

Love a faro arm, fantastic bits of kit. Oddly I've known faro arms used on all sorts of retro tin. Engineers have a knack for finding reasons to use the fancy tools infact I need to get the port layout and manifolds measured up on my new motor Keep the updates coming, loving it.

Have done both the Nurburgring 24hrs and the Oldtimer grand prix. Both great events - if you're going to go camp and do a proper weekend of Motorsport based tom foolery go for the 24hrs - the forest around the track turns into some crazy commune built out of scaffolding and old wood - it's like burning man for petrol heads. I'll never forget the hot tub 2 stories up overlooking the track with a fridge next to it... Great place and when the Germans let their hair down, fun times are had, but does help if you like techno! If you want amazing cars though, the Oldtimer grand prix is amazing - here's a good write up and photos retrorides.proboards.com/thread/173710/late-never-timer-grand-prixIt's an amazing event, with an unbelievable range of cars. The sound of a BMW M1 flat out up the hill before the Karussell will never leave me.

So as has been mentioned, the Capri is featured in this month's Classic Ford Magazine - image to whet your appetite below - quality poor enough to force you to leave the computer and do some old school mag based reading - go on, it's a great post Christmas overeating read. Had so much fun doing the shoot, thanks again go to all involved. If you ever get the chance to be featured, go for it. Got to say it's the best cherry on top feeling, opening a mag you've been reading for years and seeing a car you've built. Proper happy at the moment As for the car, well it's under cover awaiting the new engine. Heads are still away, but should be back soon, and the parts are coming together - set of proper "Made in Italy" triple IDF44 Webers are winging their way here from the US as I type - not looking forward to the complexities of the manifold they'll need! Will get some photos up in the New Year hopefully.

I believe a transit one can be had that's got a heavier duty compression plate, but a 1" x 23 spline and 215mm OD is basically a standard Pinto clutch.

Great idea, I'd be well up for this.
Agree half day/evening formats work really well - did an evening open pit lane at Cadwell few weeks back and was £80 for 3.5 hrs track time, which with only 19 people there and the car behaving itself meant I got over an hour of track time, with about 20 mins of the track completely to myself. One of the best track days I've been on.
I understand why some people like sessions, but having been track daying in classics/retros for 15 years I'd say open pit lane works a lot better as you get to choose when you and the car get a rest, it removes the stress of pulling in to check something just in case (you don't want to loose 5 mins of a 20 min session) and if something does go wrong, you don't run the risk of loosing all your track time sorting it out.
Money wise I'd happily do £80-100 for an evening (4hrs), £120-130 for a half day and up to £160-170 for a full day, assuming it was a worthwhile track (theres a reason I'll drive 3.5 hrs to Cadwell rather than 25mins to Mallory.
As for noise levels - well the Capri is about 103dB, so struggles sometimes. And given how loud some RR cars are, 105dB might be sensible!

I've been using a Saab 9-3 (99-02) 3 door SE Turbo. This has a gross weight of of 1850kg and a gross train weight of 3450kg, basically it maximises your towing capacity and could have been designed for us younger towers! I chose a 1600kg gross trailer to maximise my load capacity, but it's suit you perfectly. Plus being a turbo it's actually capable of towing a loaded up transporter in deed I can more than keep up with traffic when towing, and it's actually nice to drive. Also been reliable and averages about 35mpg (get up to 40mog on a motorway run, and generally about 28mpg towing the car transporter loaded). So it's about the best petrol tow car you'll find mpg wise (except something a lot newer!) I'm actually going to be selling it pretty soon (and fairly cheap as it's starting to need some love) as sadly hillclimbs generally have you parking up in a field, meaning when it rains I have to tow the trailer off site and load up on the road - which never works well on little country lanes! So I'm taking my trailer test in a couple of and moving to a 4x4, needs must sadly as the Saab has been great. Another option if you want 4x4 is a Suzuki Grand Vitara - if you get the right spec (3 door, 2litre petrol I think) this has a 1900kg gross and 3500kg gross train - but not sure if the engine will cope with towing a heavier trailer - they do have a low range box though so probably will, just be very slow... But for a 1400kg trailer you might get a bit more spec choice, maybe one of the diesels.
