Could your fuel pump push rod be worn?
As you changing up to 5th at 60 you are dropping RPM's so the volume of fuel pushed through by the pump is lower but the engine is under the same load.
Just a thought as my 1700cc carb engine in my bay window had a similar problem and as the pump push rods are unobtanium I switched to an electric pump.

Hi all, please stick with this story as the problem has been ongoing for so long it may turn into an essay. First of all I am talking about a 1996 Audi A6 Avant with a 2.6 V6 (so many 6's). This one; new audi 001 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr A few months ago I replaced the coolant tank as the overflow pipe connection had split and I was slowly loosing coolant, while warm it was evaporating through the split. I dropped the coolant from the radiator, replaced the tank and re-filled. All was well but about a month later I was driving at night and while stuck in traffic I noticed that my voltage would drop, dimming the lights for a moment then it would pick up almost straight away. When I parked up and checked under the bonnet the fans were coming on for a quick burst, about 4 seconds and this was tying into the voltage drop. I seem to remember the fans would run all the time but at a slower speed than they were running now. A few days later the car boiled over as the fans were still only coming on in short bursts (only when the air con was switched on) but the temp guage did not cimb above 90 degrees. I changed the fan switch, no change so I rigged a toggle switch temporarily to switch the fans on manually when needed and this was working to keep the engine cool but I forgot to switch them on the other day and again the car boiled over. What I noticed when under the bonnet was the top water hose was too hot to touch but the hose from the water pump to the bottom of the rad was no where near as hot and the fan switch was still almost cool. Does anybody have any idea where to look for the fault? I have been through the relays and they all seem to work. Coud the thermostat be faulty? Would this cause the electric fans to come on full pelt causing a voltage drop? Thank you very much for any help you can give me as its the only thing (appart from a dodgy exhaust clamp) spoiling a nice car. Cheers, Dave.

I'm not sure if this should be in the other modifications thread but here goes. For my parents 40th wedding anniversary I had all their old cine film transferred to DVD and edited it down for them. While going through it I found that inneviatably cars pop up a lot, especially my Dads MK2 Cortina. I was going to edit down the car sections as I have the railway parts but it wasnt working so i have gone through the DVD and copied the frames with the interesting cars. Quality is not ideal but I hope you like these and have some fun identifying the cars in the pictures. cine scan 18 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 19 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 17 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 15 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 12 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 11 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 10 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 9 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 7 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 1 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 48 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 44 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 40 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 33 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 19 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 17 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr cine scan 12 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr There are more pictures on my flickr page and if you are interested, the films of the railway stuff and a film of a steam ship ride down the River Clyde are here. (I had to add the sound as the film were silent). Thanks for looking, Dave.

The front over hang and shape made me think of a '96 Firebird. The side view is very Civic.
I was reading that the pointy nose was there to deflect any pedestrians off to the side if they were hit by the car to save their life. Dosnt explain why the back is pointy.

Ignoring the politics surrounding the death of Gaddafi it turns out he had a go at car design. In a short piece in the paper it was briefly mentioned that he designed what he thought would be the worlds safest car so I had to go and find some more details. Good old google led me to this story in the Telegraph from 2009. "HIS country may be better known for producing the oil burned in automobiles, but to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his military coup, Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi has designed a 'rocket car'. An Italian engineering company revealed Gaddafi ordered an ultra-safe car as sleek as a rocket to celebrate the anniversary of the 1969 coup that brought him to power, FoxNews reports. The "Libyan Rocket", as the prototype is called, is described as an "elegant sedan" 5.1m, more than 1.8m wide, with a 3-litre, V-6 gasoline engine. According to the BBC, it also has airbags, an unspecified 'electronic defence system', and a collapsible bumper. In an added bonus, it can go hundreds of miles on a flat tire, a feature that could come in handy while driving in the vast Libyan desert. Other safety features include a device to cut off the fuel supply to avoid a fire in case of accident. Domenico Morali, CEO of Tesco TS SpA, an automotive design company based in Turin, Italy, said Gaddafi joined in discussions about the car's styling and asked for an original car using Libyan materials including marble, leather and fabric. The car was unveiled earlier this week in Tripoli at the end of an African Union summit. "The first thing (Gaddafi wanted) was safety in how you drive," Morali said in a telephone interview. "The second was developing the automotive sector in Libya." According to the BBC, construction of a factory to produce the car will begin next month in the nation's capital, Tripoli." In the article I read he assembled the worlds press, showed them the car then the thing wouldnt start. I get the feeling the cars will never hit the streets and it may be a bit tastless to say I wonder if the tryes will be ditch finders ;D. So what does a mad mans car look like? Or maybe you fancy the sports version? Dave

Snap; vanfest 2009 by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr As a side note my friend Gayle was driving past Glasgow airport a few years ago and spotted a VW baywindow panel van with BA livery sitting rusting away in a yard. She went in and asked about buying it and they told her to have it if she can collect it. So we went up with a car trailer and whipped it home, not easy with seized brakes. Turns out it housed a turbine in the back, I think for powering up planes. Stank of fuel and had a front bumper about 4 foot deep with a banister round it like a porch. The thing was totally rotten even with a coating of oil and with huge vent holes in the roof it was a bigger project than she wanted so it went to the scrappies minus any useful bits. Dave.

don't know about it being bigger, part of my reason for selling it on was the lack of space for cabinets and cooker and the fact the rear seat folded was not really big enough for a bed. I would have driven it daily and had it ready as a back up for one of my hire vans (I have 2 baywindow VW's that I hire out through www.scotlandbycamper.com ) but the inside just wasnt big enough to be a camper. Model:Volvo S40 Year:1999 Mileage:94000 Tax:no MOT:no(runs out October 10th but has a fail slip) Location:Glasgow Price:£250 Contact details:Dave, 07979308958 This is my Dads Volvo which he has owned for the past 8 years or so. It has just failed its MOT and he has decided now is the time to buy something newer before the pension money runs out and he dosnt want to spend the money fixing it which to me seems a shame as there are many more miles use left in it. It failed on play in n/s front ball joint. o/s front track rod end and o/s front brake pads. All easily fixable if you have the time and tools. Engine and box are perfect. Everything works and interior is in good condition (non-smoker). Got to be worth the £250 to pay for his new cars road tax and needs to go to make space on his drive for the new car. Any more questions let me know. Cheers for looking, Dave.

I run 2 VW bay campers with my hire company (scotlandbycamper.com) and last year had 2 instances of bad running with points closing up.
Easy for me to fix and diagnose but not good when its customers that are in the vans.
Start of the year I fitted lumitronic kits and so far had no problems what so ever (touch wood) .
Dave.
P.S. in your original post you say you want to replace "coil, points and condenser". The kit you link to only replaces points and condenser, you still need the coil.
Not even had to adjust timing and they are doing the best part of 1000 miles per week.
