^what he said if space is not an issue. Sometimes defeat is acceptable - in this case it very much is! I would not know where to beginn with this and I've restored a few cars in my time. But none this far gone... You'r basically building a new shell from scratch, more or less. With - I guess - not many repair penals available... Noone will blame you for not tackling this incredible amount of work!! In fact, I pull my hat just for the thought of trying to do it! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Status update number one: windscreen is sealed. No more water coming inside (at this corner of the car ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ) Status update number two: after runing almost out of fuel I had to take some action. I only realised this when I fueld her up and the was like 2l left in the tank and the fuel bill was a bit higher than usual ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) And as chance had it, I found a fuel sender in the scrap bin at work... And even better: it was working! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) So out with the smugglers compartment... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/tank_1.jpg) Go fooking mentaly insane and spend 2,5h searching for that bl00dy 46mm socket I made last year for the Coupé conversion... Eventually I found it and - it was rather obvious what killed the fuel sender... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) The float doesn't even move if you shake it. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/tank_2.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/tank_3.jpg) ^Not entirely sure what that is but I suspect the car had been run on veg oil for a while!? anyway; the warning light is working and the sender reads - well, it reads. Not highly accurate, but OK. And most important the warning light works, that was my main goal. For a repair that didn't cost me any money of effort that's a rather splendid outcome ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) and I also found more evidence of a very thorough cavit protection of this car; the crossmember behind the rear benach is FLOODED with conservant which is stil liquid... Nice! ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/tank_4.jpg) To bad those cars tend to rot from the outside xD Cheers, Jan

I don't know if you know - but after I told you, you'll know - it was all caused by bacterial infection of the immersion baths when they changed to the new paints. There's a dissertation here which goes into big detail: elib.uni-stuttgart.de/opus/volltexte/2000/653/pdf/diss_guehring.pdf - the solution was to renew them more frequently and monitor them better. As some were only randomly monitored for bacterial growth. But basically: that's the cause: bacteria ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Some cars went through old baths, some through newly filled (uncontaminated) ones... Who would have thought there's life in - erm - paint... ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

W124 & W201 seem to be the first cars that do NOT have extended US-bumpers... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) If my plan works out, it'll fit all snugly behind the stock bumper. It's only some bodywork that's required. But the car needs a rapir in this area anyway (old accident, think it's on the first or second page). Thanks for the input, appreciated! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I've thought about spacing the bumper, but this would totaly ruin the side view... If it's flexible enough, I might get away with 1-2cm spacer just n the middle, though. I'm certainly going to try this ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Oh and if anybody knows of a W210 E290 manifold for sale - give me a shout please!! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Cheers, Jan

Test fitting the Lorinser wheels on the Taxi... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/taxi_lorinser-1.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/taxi_lorinser-2.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/taxi_lorinser-3.jpg) Not sure I like - needs to lose some arch gap to make them look good. Soooo - again a change of plans. After curse word-loads of research, reading into stuff and phoning TÜV stations, asking stupid questions and evaluating stuff I've come to a conclusion. Which is: this engine stays in the car. Mainly because it will not be possible to get historic plates with the OM606, it's too modern. And there rules have gotten stricter. So - the OM603 is my best bet for historic plates & huge cut in taxes (and being allowed to enter emission zones etc.). However - there will be some changes. Mainly to make it more durable. This engine has 250.000km on the clock and the (reinforced!) head is allready broken... There's two things to do: find a new cylinder head. Add a intercooler. Finding the head will be a matter of time & money. Mounting the intercooler in a way that looks factory is a challenge. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/llk_1.jpg) ^this is from a W204 C-Class, I think a 220 or 250 CDI. The width is about right. There is enough space to the left & right for the air piping. Howver a complete removal of the radiator mounts is required. The radiator mounts will ave to be redesigned or taken from another car (I have some options I will go through). ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/llk_3.jpg) It will JUST about fit behind the bumper, maybe with a little angle. It's wide & tall, but rather thin. Probably not the most efficient I could find, but about the biggest intercooler that fits there. I will buy some others to try, so far this is very promising. However, there's another issue: the duct for the engine oil cooler. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/llk_2.jpg) ^this covers about 1/3 of the available bumper space... It will either require a redesign, shortening or some which-craft to make it fit with intercooler. And then comes the most challenging part: the intake manifold. I want this to look factory too. Which will require a LOT or work to achieve... Nothing from the parts bin fits, there's no space to approach it from below. I have a plan, but this again requires alloy welding and sourching rare-ish parts. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/llk_4.jpg) But: I have a plan for this... More when the time is ready. Or course this is all subject to change - but that's the plan for this car as it stands. With the 606 it would have required a intercooler anyway, but the manifold part would have ben a lot easyer. Which means: I've got a new challenge! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Cheers, Jan

Well there are only two options realy: - do it - don't do it Ans speaking of info-porn ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) - I have just learned that there are TWO versions of those reinforced big rubber floor mats/covers. The version I have and the Taxi version with push buttons on the inner sills. So - there's still some more hunting needed ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I do however have the correct rear rubber floors: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/gummiboden_taxi_w124.jpg) If you look a few posts back; these are the other rubber floors: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/taxi_gummiwannen.jpg) Slight difference ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Maybe this was subject to a face-lift or something like this - but now that I know I MUST have the pish-button version ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) anyway, the front pieces I got were cheap as chips and usually sell for MUCH more and VERY fast. No loss there. Cheers, Jan

Sooooo - today I did some investigative stuff. Mainly because the puddle on the floor matt was getting larger and I don't like wet seats. And I need to appologise for the incredibly bad picture quality - I need to order new accus for my proper cam... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/wasser_1.jpg) At first I suspected the sun roof drain, they can rust or the hoses slip off. Nothing was the case. Much simpler: the windscreen was fitted poorly and leaking... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/wasser_2.jpg) Evidence on the roof cladding; water was collecting and dripping out the joint of a-pillar & roof cladding, dripping right on the seats & floor mats. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/wasser_3.jpg) Off came the windscreen trims - and revealed that this was a known issue to the previous owner (not the one I bought it from)... Someone's been busy with sealant there. But only a thin, patchy smear or sealant... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/wasser_4.jpg) I put a LOT more sealant there to stop the water from coming inside... It's only a temporary measure, the windscreen needs to come out this year anyway, since it's a) cracked, and b) there's rust along the A-pillars. Probably the aftermath of this poor windscreen change. But then - god knows how many windscreens this car has had in the past, given the age & milage... I was expecting this - nothing to be sad about. It's all fixable. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/wasser_5.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/wasser_6.jpg) ^you may be able to tell that the crack originated from the rust spot! Cracked windscreens are a sure tell-tale of a-pillar rust!! The crack was not present when I bought the car. I took the opportunity to install the proper Taxi reading spot light... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/taxi_leuchte_1.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/taxi_leuchte_2.jpg) I may have mentioned it before; but this was not a "ful spec" taxi, but a "normal" car ordered as taxi or something like this. There was "full spec" taxi that could be ordered with some options pre-installed like roof sign holder, taxi light, taxi alarm, heatng options and vinyl-seats as standard - like the 300D from page 1! But you basically could order what you wanted - this is one of those "lesser" Taxis ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) But realy - who cares... Cheers, Jan

Thank you! I tend to get attached to the wrecks I buy... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) And speaking of buying; I finally got hold of a set of Taxi rubber floor mats. Been after an affordable set for, 1.5 years? I initially wanted to have them for the Coupé. and now I have a car that suits them much better ;-) Crappy potato picture: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/taxi_gummiwannen.jpg) A steal for 30€ delivered. Since we have over +17°C outside... Time to tinker with the car a bit ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) First measure: make the old Becker play MP3s from phone: check. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/mp3_taxi.jpg) also pictzured my make-shift 12V socket ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Proper install is actually below the dashboard in passengers footwell - only found it today. Nice! Once I have the center console out, I'll re-wire the ash tray & socket in the Taxi armrest, the wiring there is missing. But for now I can't be arsed to tear it all apart... Next was to put in a new fuel pre-filter. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/vorfilter_taxi-1.jpg) ^that's a very clean engine, if I may say so! And whilst i had the air filter cover removed for better access - I found my engine rattle! This plastic baffle thing is loose and rattles at certain revs... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/vorfilter_taxi-2.jpg) And fixed it. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/vorfilter_taxi-3.jpg) ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Pre-filter as a good call; the old one is pretty clogged up with dirt... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/vorfilter_taxi-4.jpg) Cheers, Jan

Leather is mostly for pub points ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) My car came with it - I'm not going to change it. But would I have ordered it with leather? Probably not... In summer it's hot, in winter it's cold and you need to be carefull with it. And take care of it every now and then. On the other hand - the smell is nice. Or in short: whatever. If it's there that's fine, if not - that's fine just s well.
