Sigh. The France deal isn't happening. This means; only one early #15 head left to try - which I don't realy want. They'r known to be bad. On the other hand it's survived 475.000km. But knowing myself I will not feel comfortable with a "ticking bomb" under the bonnet. Maybe I just have to work harder, sell some stuff I don't want to buy and fork out a sh!tload of money for a brand new cylinder head (no, that's not going to happen).
My mojo reservoir is draining... Sigh. It's such an awesome car to drive, but gives me nothing but grief. Maybe I should sell it after all?

Sure will! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I'm probably not going to have a fit cylinder head for the Coupé anyway, so this car has priority. Which meant - pulling the cruise controll ECU from the Coupé and puting it in the Taxi. The original CC-ECU was lost when it was sent in for repair, together with many other CC-ECUs. There was a guy who, for some years, reliably repaired them. So people kept sending him broken CC-ECUs, his reputation rose - and one day he had just dissappeared. From one day to the other, never to bee seen again. And with him a lot of CC-ECUs. The Taxi's was one of them, sent in by the provious owner. Anyway, the Coupé's CC-ECU was repaird in ther netherlands and is working flawless. It's got the wrong coding coupler for the n/a OM603, but it works well enough. Only at low speeds (like 20mph) there's a slight jerking. But this could also be down to the worn out linkage. It probably is.

Soo. I've finaly had a free day and welded up the pre-chamber extraction adapter... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf2-1.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf2-2.jpg) Unfortunately - it didn't work. I have like 4.5kg sliding weight and about 45cm length on my sliding hammer. It didn't make the slightest impression on the pre-chambers... I gave up after an hour of slamming the weight into the handle. Not a mm did they move. It was then that I decided to have a VERY close look at the cylinder head to determine if it is worth it to continue trying to pull the pre-chambers. Or if it's worth to pay the engine shop to do it. The verdict is clear: scrap. I knew about a crack between the valves on n°6 cylinder, but I also found cracks on cylinder 5 and 4, one huge crack going right at the pre-chamber of n°5 cylinder. It's going into the bin. 6th cylinder: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf2-4.jpg) 5th cylinder: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf2-3.jpg) 4th cylinder: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf2-5.jpg) And there'S also a BIG crater from corrosion right next to the fire ring of the head gasket on n°6 cylinder: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf2-6.jpg) ^I knew of this, it's easy enough to have it welded up and the head skimmed very slightly. But the other cracks, especially on n°5 put the nail in the coffin for this cylinder head. It's too expensive to have it fixed up. The good news is: there's a #22 head on it's way from France... It wasn't cheap, I don't know it's condition - yet another gamble with this engine ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) The head I binned today was a #20 head, the second to last evolution of OM603 Turbo cylinder head. The #22 is the last evolution and people say that they last... But they also say that about #20 heads. Of which I have a broken one currently in the car and the example shown in this post. Mixed feeling and things. I'll see. But I'm not expecting to have this car on the road again this year... Priority is set to low. Cheers, Jan

Dave: reinforced Taxi suspension ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) The ride is a bit harsher than on normal W124s. But I'm keeping it... Pre-facelift cars seem all to sit a little higher anyway, though. THE_Liam: Those old n/a diesels mated to a slush box are not for everyone... When I brought mine home I thought it was broken ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) The Turbo is SO much faster, the difference is incredible! But that's no surprise since the Turbo has almost 100nm more torque! The shine is also down to at least one re-spray ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) The wings & bonnet are "new" and the rear quarters & hatch are also re-painted. I'm not sure about the doors, but I think they are still in original paint.

Thank you! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Though I'm a bit concerned my threads didn't give you a W124 aversion - with all the stuff that breakes on these ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Back on topic; if I don't have to work on 911s, my job has it's benefits. I rescued all those tools from the scrap bin: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/bordwerkzeug.jpg) Did a oil service today. And found out that the steel sump guard is no joy if the drain plug is rounded... So for now it's off again and I'm not in the mood to put it back on. Maybe tomorrow... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/oel-1.jpg) Replaced the horns with some shinier ones whilst the oil was draining... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/oel-2.jpg) ...and since the sump guard was off and I got a un-broken radiator shroud, I finally installed this too (it's getting warmer and the fan will soon-ish have to do work). Since it's easyer when you can access it from below - the stubbon barstuart. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/oel-3.jpg) Well - that's it for now. The odometer is at 905.000km now. 95.000 to go... Cheers, Jan

I'm totaly no into offroad things, but this realy is something else. And I don't even know why. Neither is it slammed into oblivion nor is it screaming anything. It's just - simple. Proportioned. Purposefull, yet somehow subtly emotionally beautifull. And I like that a LOT!

Well... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Are both washer pumps plugged in? The wiper get theyr signal from the pump. Though - maybe they are just that. Not working. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) They still look good, though. And to be honest; I've disconected them on the Coupé... They waste a ton of washer fluid... Back to the headlight wiperless Taxi; put on the Lorinsers today. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/lorinser-1.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/lorinser-2.jpg) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/lorinser-3.jpg) The more I look at them, the more I like them on the Taxi ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Cheers, Jan

![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Today's plan of action was to pull the pre-chambers of the #20 head and give it away for pressure testing. Take 1: fail. Got one lock ring removed, the others were too tight. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf-1.jpg) Take 2: let the car do the work... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf-2.jpg) That worked a lot better and I was able to crack them open. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf-3.jpg) Take 3: sacrifice old injector to make adapter for the sliding hammer to poll pre-chambers. When I had all prepared for welding, I realised I was completely out of gas, not enough for even a single blob of weld ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/kopf-4.jpg) Well - I had to look for the bottle cap which resultet in a sort of spring-clearout... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/ausmisten.jpg) And then I put the Lorinsers on the Taxi, then I started to rain dogs & cats and that's the day gone... Well maybe on the weekend then ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Cheers, Jan

Haha - that's not even half the milage! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Though mine is on the 2nd engine and 2nd transmission with 2nd rebuild... Engine failed after a garage killed it, and the gearbox - well, I guess that's just down to the city-traffic & Taxi usage... Headlight wipers are a must IMO, they sort off make the front end a little less dull...

I bet your german was better than my unintelligible jabbering ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Back on topic - I gave one last try today... First; off with le bumpeur - this made things a lot easyer. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-11.jpg) It was not neccesary, since I then found the actuall issue; the hoop on the sump guard was bent as well! After I re-bent it with a long pipe, it went on like a glove ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-12.jpg) And then the big moment; will the drain plug be in the correct position? I've read about non-aligning drain plugs & angle grinders before, but i looks like I got the right sump guard for my engine: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-13.jpg) There's even a catch tray next to the opening to deflect the stream of oil down the opening - very clever! The rubber cover for this drain opening is still on it's way, I sourced on in the UK since it's NLA from MB's... And the coolant drain is also taken care off! ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-14.jpg) and now I can finally explain why I made up those two discs - I could have bought them from MB's - ut at 37€ per piece I thought I'm better off making my own. 74€ for two tin discs is not steep, that's fooking vertical!! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-15.jpg) That's it. One more totaly unneccesary addition to the car that's probably going to give me a severe headache if I drop a nut or tool down the engine bay... ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Cheers, Jan

Today: I failed. Sometimes you just have to accept defeat and surrender... This landed a few days ago on my door step... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/schutz-1.jpg) ...which contained a BIG piece of THICK steel. And to make it worse, it had been dipped in a zinc immersion bath which added a HEAVY coat of zinc. Or in other words: it's a fooking bl00dy heavy piece of steel sump guard. A very rare piece, I probably payed more then what's sensible for it... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/schutz-2.jpg) To make it even heavyer I gave it a coat of stone chip & paint on the underside... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-4.jpg) Put on two captive nut clip thingys... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-5.jpg) ...and discovered a hole that's not supposed to be where it is: ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-6.jpg) So broke out the welder and put a bit of plate on and then I had to watch paint dry. Which took ages with about 6°C+. To accelerate things, I put up the heat gun and went inside to have a coffee. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-7.jpg) So much for the succesfull part of the day. The less succesfull part comes now. Failing to install the sumpguard. It was just way too heavy to hold it up with one hand and try to bolt it on... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-8.jpg) ...but even with the help of the gearbox jack - it didn't align. Imagine me lieing under the car wrestling with 200kg of steel and cursing my right nut off... The damn thing just didn't want to slide into place. So fcuk it I thought. And went to put on the old plastic cladding - but wait a minute... ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-9.jpg) What the...? When I put this in place when the car was new it lined up perfectly! And then I remembered that awefull noise from a parking misshap (a big chunk of concrete I could not see) a couple of weeks back. I thought it was just damage to some plastic bits - maybe not... Anyway; the steel equivalent has the same cut-out for the radiator support (the round pipe). Some blows with the opinion-amplifier and it was back where it belonged. ![](http://jan-wulf.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/uschutz-10.jpg) But then it was getting cold & dark - so next try tomorrow... If I'm strong enough to get it up... Right now I'm more like "do I realy need that fooking thing!?" - the awnser is obviously yes... If it had allready been in place some weeks back, it would fit perfectly now ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Money well spent? I don't know... 'Cause; if I wouldn't have the sumpguard, the parking damage wouldn't be a problem in the first place... Vicious circle etc. Cheers, Jan
