So, I officially have gone through a set of brake pads. For the first time ever They lasted pretty close to 100.000km. That's new to me. I've installed brake pads in a lot of cars, but I never used them up. They still have some life left, but the wear contacts are touching the discs. And the yellow wear indicator light is annoying as hell, so I'll replace them soon. Also need a set of new tyres... Two are almost worn, one is bald on the inner flank. So the front suspension needs an alignment - which probably means - I'll soon takle the front suspension rebuild. I have all the parts ready on the shelf. All that's left is making the Jeep ready for duty, so I have a backup car, should something not work out as planed. Some work ahead... Apart from that; close to 1.006.000km on the counter... Cheers, Jan

I love my Jeep! Even if it's broken again... Took it to work yesterday - one of the front wheel bearings failed. It's making noises - BAD noises. Like - really bad. Luckily I found a Jeep parts supplier who stocks 2WD front wheels bearings. They are different to the 4WD ones. And everything sold over here was 4WD I think. Cheers, Jan

A really big engine would be nice, I admit that. But in the end - I just love the raspy sound of a straight six (or flat six). All my cars are straight sixes - and my Mini would be a straight six too, if it was possible (Stop, don't give me ideas plase )... Don't know, I'm just a straight-six type of guy I guess. I like big V8s, I like them a lot - but in the end, I'd always go with the inline six. That being said, I've recently looked at stroker kits for the AMC L6... Quite affordable I must say. Though in the end it's still an expensive engine to build, due to all the machining work that needs to be done. Btw. - this is the biggest engined car I ever owned...

Sooo, since the interior is back together, two snaps of it... all I managed to do is install the antenna cable this weekend, the rest as spent assisting - a little - with fixing an not-quite-so-old Ford. Anyway. As mentioned, I installed a flexible CB antenna, made by "Kathrein" (better known for sat dishes and associated stuff). It's made from mutliple pieces. The antenna foot is separate, the antenna can be screwed on. The cable between antenna & splitter is also separate, screwed on. It was quite a nightmare to attach it to the antenna foot..... Took me nearly 1.5h! ^picture makes it look easy... And finding an adapter for an antenna cable was equally challenging... But, my favourite electronics store - they had one! Stashed in a box of unsorted antenna cable adapters, but the woman who runs this smal buiseness - she knew where it was! 5€. Awesome! Made me realise that Mercedes antennas must be odd-balls with they'r screw-on cables. Every car parts place I visitied had push-connectors. Whatever. Radio works. Just needs a constant live to remember it's code.... I'm liking the colour combination! Bench seat needs re-upholstering badly, though. I'll get a quote, don't fancy doing it myself. I mean I could, but my time is better spent elsewhere. Cheers, Jan

So, finally got round to insure & register it today... And what'S even better; I got assigned a short plate! Plates with only one additional letter & number (first 2 or 3 letters are county code) need a permit, since they'r very limited. But, this car has a smal enough number plate recess to qualify for the shortest possible plate. Very chuffed! Some countys are very reluctant to assign these, so I'm glad ours is reasonable. It took a bit longer than usual to register the car. Everything had to be signed off by the officials of the registration office - but in the end I got my shorty plates. And as you can or can not see, I also installed a long flexible fiber glas antenna. I love those! Good for driving through hedges Cheers, Jan

Yeah, short of updates lately, mainly due to lack of time and will to do any wrenching... And because there's simply no need for it right now. Just driving, driving, driving. It'll get new rear calipers in the near future, since one pistons is a bit sticky. Milage: 1.004.500 General Clem - The Turbos seem to be nearly extinct, there's almost none for sale anymore... Resp. all diesels, espacially the wagons, are getting very rare. I'm glad I've kept mine... optimusprime2 - replacing the water pump on a 6-cylinder petrol engine is one of the less joyfull repairs. Be glad you don't have A/C, 'cause the big line runs just in front of the rear lower bolt... Lovely bit of engineering! Cheers, Jan

Oh my, I only ever saw one Fuego in real life, and that was rotting on a drive way - untill it got removed a couple of years ago. A pretty exotic car nowadays! I always like the styling. Great car!

Another one. I like W126 S-classes. I like them a lot. They drive nice and comfy, they give you a feeling of being rock solid. You glide along, the roads feel smooth, it's quiet inside - just the perfect driving car. You feel safe, comfy and unstressed, this feeling of driving an excellent car that's not build to a budget. The silk smooth engine moves you reliably wherever you desire to go, the car never feels exhausted, neither does the driver. Great cars!
Until it starts to rain. And you have to turn on those god forbidden awefull damn wipers... Those wipers, they totally ruined those cars to me. I hate them with a furious passion! It's not just the spastic motion of them, but the fact that they leave this little triangle of rain or dirt right in front of you. Right in front of you! They just don't clear the whole blöödy screen. I mean - come on!? It's stupid annoying to have that uncovered triangle of wet/dirty screen right in front of you, right in your face.... And every time those unsymetric wipers whizz over the screen, I feel like ripping them off and rather wait for it to stopp raining. Nuts! They really drive me NUTS!
I mean - ARRRGH!

Do they have diff lockers? We found that diff lockers hugely improve off-road capability... Especially on muddy terrain.

Also check the warm-up or cold-run regulator (google should deliver a how-to). This enrichens the mixture for cold start and during warm up. If it's broken, it's enriching the mixture all the time... If this checks out solid, the K-Jetronic can be adjusted, it's only the KE-Jetronic where you should not touch the CO-screw... But check the whole system first, especially the warm-up regulator.

Sooo - I was not happy with the "idiot lights" cluster... So I bought a Jeep - er - cheap "full" cluster. Which of course has no cut-out for the gear indicator for the column shifter... So I made a carboard template and a fixture to make the cutout. Used a stanley knife to cut the face. Next time I'll cut it from the front side, should make it nicer. Or cut it smaller than required and file to size. Just cutting it from behind leaves a rolled edge that's hard to get rid of. All works plug & play, only the senders for temperature & oil pressure need replacing for sending units instead of switches. I said "next time", because I'm on the hunt for an early "full" gauge cluster, with the early blue faces, like my "idiot lights" cluster. They'r just so much better looking than the newer all black gauges... I used the black cover of the old cluster though, it's a bit better looking than the grey cover (first picture in this post). So, not much done... Cheers, Jan

Well I guess this is fcuked New cable is off a Wrangler, it's a bit longer but fits. I installed the rear view mirror on the roof sub-structure, since it's a bit too wide (again for a wrangler). And would collide with the sun visors if glued to the screen as per original... Then I put the gauge cluster back in - and the park brake warning light stopped working, the fuel gauge went nuts - oh the joy of old cheap american-french electrics. I get a feeling why people try to avoid the "Renix" Jeeps... At least I don't have a Bendix ABS. I've ordered some electric contact cleaner & grease, basically any connector and ground on this thing needs refreshing or beefing up. Soo... I'm now waiting for a couple of insurances to get back to me with quotes. Since this is classed as a truck, it falls into the same category as all the White Vans and insurance is rather... Well, unexpectedly high. Best quote so far is 1000€/year. If I can lower this a bit, I'd be happy! On the other hand tax for a light truck is very low, for this it's 110€/year. But then - I didn't buy this as a cheap car, it's a toy for when I'm in the mood to destroy a metric ton of gasoline Cheers, Jan

I initially started it as a sort of scrapbook of cool cars I'd found online and so on, but a few years ago I came to the conclusion that it felt silly to share other people's content on a blog instead of making my own, so I refocused it as a kind of archive of cool cars I'd seen at shows and whatnot. Same here! I do still occasionally share stuff others put online, but I mostly publish my own content now. It's my personal bit of interwebs, where I share stuff I do. Not everything, but a lot of it. www.motofreibeuter.de and I'm actually surprised that people are reading it and comment on it. One word of advice though; make sure you have a good spam filter if you enable comments. I'm getting hundreds(!) of spam comments every day. But only some very, very few make it through the filter. I pay for my own webspace, but don't ask me how much, I honestly have no idea. But since I can still spend money on cars and car stuff and not starve to death - it can't be that much... I'm using WordPress as a backend, it's pretty much as complicated as posting on here.
