The Hillman master cylinder works, but it isn't Ideal. The bite point is really high and i don't know whether the clutch is worn or the master cylinder is playing up. I'm going to get a MX5 master cylinder for it just so i can rule that out!

Down low it's pretty good! It's basically a standard 1.8 mx5 engine atm, similar power, probably a little less, but there's still tuning to do. Mentioning tuning, it's makes some nice pops and bangs on over run now If anyone wants a look over the car, just let me know! James

To be honest the wiring really wasnt hard at all when using a stock loom. All i did is strip back all the tape and plastic conduit stuff ( carefully so i could re use it with new tape) and just traced the wires back, then trim and solder up the plug for the megasquirt. Assembling the megasquirt wasn't too difficult either, fiddly and you need good eyes, but if your patient and confident enough then give it a go! The only advice that i would give is to read the Megamanual and the assembly guide a few times so you know exactly what route you are going for your ignition control and crank position/ trigger wheel configuration. The best way to know where problems might be is if you have built it yourself James

Very nice wheelspinner! Just need some money now, someone buy the my audi?
Code109, using megasquirt the semsors used in my setup are the coolant temp sensor, manifold air pressure, throttle position and crank position (36-1 trigger wheel) I need a intake air sensor ideally, but it's not a massive hinderance atm.

Sorry for the lack of pace with the updates everyone! theres not been alot to see and i have had 2 weekends off Last weekend i went mountain biking up at winlatter for the altura gravity stage race. I would highly recommend this to any bikers on here and it was fairly cheep at £35 for a 6 stage DH race! Here's some proof i wasn't just sat in front of the telly drinking beer After that i spent the week tidying up some wiring and other little jobs. The bay soon looked nice and tidy. But the best bit is that this beauty turned up not long into the week courtesy of DR Prop, based near Brampton: The missing peice of the jigsaw Fired that in and then there was only one thing left to do !! Floor it haha I did spent 6 hours tuning a very conservative base map before flooring it for those of a nervous disposition! Anyway, I'm broke now and any upgrades will have to wait until pay day and my birthday is coming up next month so if anyone wants to give me some Dyno time as a present, then i'm only a PM away James

Have a look on my profile and at my build thread. I've just stuck one in my hunter, drove it for the first time last night actually! As for the fuel pump, I used one that was for a red top engine. And the stock regulator. I am using megasquirt as well so this would neglect any pressure differences as I have just tuned it to the pressure I have!.
Whilst typing this I have noticed that Nomad has linked my build, thanks man! I'll. Be updating it when I've been out for a bit setting it up this evening.

Not alot of progress as most of it is all done, i'm just waiting for the prop shaft which is being made as i write this! The engine bay looks like this now though, I have moved the battery as it was wedged up against the engine as a few of you noticed, and the clutch line has been made up. In the post, there a silicone bend and a fan for the rad, as the MX5 engine doesn't have a viscous fan to cool it, whereas the Hillman engine did so its currently fanless. There's also a 90 degree elbow so i wont have to have the air filter sticking out of the bonnet! As for the engine position, ive gone with what i know works best and stuck it as far back as possible. Better weight distribution yo!!1 I've took some pictures of how well the mounts line up. and where the gear lever ended up. Engine mount Heater bubble clearance: There is more than there looks to be as the bit nearest the cam sensor is about 4 inches back from it so has 2 inches before it would touch the heater bubble. I trimmed the sensor down as it wasnt needed and stuck out quite far. Gear lever placement: This placement is awesome for 2 reasons. 1, The lever is standard so it has a nice short throw and a weighty pool ball on top so it feels nice! 2, Its in exactly the same position as the old lever. The old lever has a dogleg in it and pointed towards you, with the knob in this position. Hopefully ill have the propshaft by the end of the week so i can get it back on the road and get it all tuned up and sorted out If someone BUYS MY AUDI, ill also be able to tart it up a bit aswell haha James

It was speedy work indeed Jim. I'm knackered now though! Started on Saturday, engine in on Sunday and started on Monday at 21.45 after a wiring session when i got home from work! (sorry neighbours. Couldn't resist hearing it for the first time and seeing its the Megasquirt worked!) The 1725 that it had in it didn't really have anything wrong with it, but it was old and tired. I suppose 3x the power will be nice and an extra 2000rpm to rev to James

Ive just fit a 1.8 engine in my hillman hunter. Stil waiting for a propshaft though As far as costs, you can pick up a complete MX5 engine, gearbox and ancillaries for roughly the same price as a 2.0 Zetec engine on its own. The MX5 gearbox is quite short and small as well so its an easy fit in old cars like my Hillman. Ive also ran mine on megasquirt. For the cost, its more than getting keys cut and coded to stock ecu but it is far superior when it comes to tuning. Its also a bonus if you decide to turbo/ sc it in the future as its just a case of bolting it on and plugging the laptop in!. Ive spent roughly £500 so far on my conversion. That's including all the hardware, the Mega squirt MS2 v3.57 and the petrol money to collect it all. If you do decide to go the Mega squirt route, don't go plug and play if you can solder. P'n'P units are about $500=700 for an MX5, whereas a standard megasuirt is $279 in kit form. All i did is build mine using the mega manual, us a plug and play base tune and make my own plug and there you go, a Plug and play for 1/3 of the price James PS, Heres my build thread if you want a look: retrorides.proboards.com/thread/166310/1972-hillman-hunter-mx5-heart#.U4eK8PldXgw

And here is the reason that i have changed the title. Last week the clutch failed me on the car. The pedal went to the floor, the rock hard suggesting that it had reached max extension. Upon closer inspection it looked like the clutch release bearing had given up (hadn't actually) 3 hours prior to this i had bought a MX5 1800 engine and gearbox for it. Ity came with the loom, mounts, ancillaries ect and i already had the Megasquirt. Seeing as the engine/gearbox had to basicly come out to do the bearing i though there was no better time/excuse to stick the MX5 engine in it! So i pulled it all out, leaving a bit hole: The next step was to assemble the engine and gearbox and give it a clean. ta for the pictures Zoe! The next job was to stick it in. The gearlever hole needed some enlarging as it is further back, but aside from the the engine mounts and gearbox cross member both lined up with the MX5 mounts. Clearance on the sump: The jack is there with an axle stand just out of shot on either side Here it is fully fitted and running (the sound on the video is curse word! my phone couldn't handle it) It was just started up running on a very basic tune. Since that i have fitted a fuel return to the tank using the stock regulator, new oil and filter, sorted out the vac lines and got the coolant temp sensor calibrated. There are 2 jobs left to do now so that it can be driven: - Get a prop shaft made - Make a clutch line Once that's done its engine tuning time! James

Just a quick update as I'm pretty worn out! The engine is all in now, wiring done, fuel lines, water ect done. Just have to get it started! Having some issues getting a sign from the VR sensor. I've narrowed it down to a few things whilst having a think at work so I'll give them a go when I'm home tonight! I'll also get some pictures up On here at some point. But for now there's a load on my instagram ( Hillmanjames) Wish me luck. James
