There I was just minding my own business when, from out of nowhere, the Scimitar SS1 / Sabre popped into my head. No idea why, but I thought it may be a topic of conversation. Good? Bad? Bad in a good way? Utter shatpank?! Nissan CA18DET must mean something good?! SR20 transplant and obligatory slammage could be fun...

I think they only built 14 and a half of them. I've only ever seen one on the road, some years ago. I reckon they'd be a right laugh!

Beavis, sometimes I worry about you!
No-one's got one because they are GOD AWFUL F*CKING UGLY!
I'd have an S12 over one of those every day of the week. They just conjur up images of middle-class 'curse word' mid-life-crisis types... you know the sort who never go quite the whole hog & like to wear socks and sandles as they bimble round country lanes on a sunday afternoon in their plastic wedgy sports thing.
Sort of an MGB-lite for moustachio'd dullards who want the wind in their (thinning) hair but not the rust & hassle....
SE6 Scimitar drop-top if you must!!!

Well put! I never seen one for real, pogweasel may say i'm just lucky. Must be some ironic potential if you could ever find one - cheap.

I did my school work experience at a Diahtshu/Jeep garage who had tried to sell these in the mid 80's, apparently they ordered an evaluation one which sat on the forecourt for the next few years because no one would buy it ;D

I, err, kinda like them ;D
They MUST have SOME potential...
Low, on wide small-diameter wheels... Yeah, maybe...
Sub-poundshop quality plastic interior though if I remember right...

If i remember correctly they had two engine options. The first was a Ford 1.6CVH lump and the second was the grin factor Nissan 1.8 Turbo. There were big issues pertaining to their build quality and reliability at the time which, basically killed them off. They were quite a decent car of their day and, looks apart, would still make a very good Retro project. They are, shall we say, different and surely thats what its all about?

Don't forget that they have a separate chassis, & substructure that all the grp panels bolt on to, so making a new body (ie one that looks good) shouldn't be that tricky ;D

I think they have some potential in them, although i don't think they're that attractive.... If its a CVH one, i'd chuck that out and lob the 2ltr zetec in there. 150bhp+aerodynamics+lighweight= winner IMO Or you could then turbocharge the zetec for 300bhp+ of fun! We used to get one in when I worked at a garage, CVH varient, wasnt bad! don't know if i'd own one over a mk1 MR2 though mind.....

Someone oposite my in-laws has one, lives under a tarpaulin never seen it move. Someone in our village had one when it was new. Seen a couple about. I seem to recall they are one of those "great when its going" kind of cars, so pretty much the same as the other Scimitars then...

Didn't they do a 1.3CVH version too in early days? There was a facelift one too.

Didn't they do a 1.3CVH version too in early days? There was a facelift one too. Yeah, and a 1.4. Both slow as a slow thing IIRC. The last of them were called Scimitar Sabres. I dunno, there's something about them that makes me look past the fugly body, the San Andreas Fault-challenging panel gaps and Metro interior... maybe just because they're different and you don't ever see them on the road. I'd much rather have a Scimitar SE6 or something, but I wouldn't say no to one of these... ;D

Loads of info about on them, but yes there was 1300, 1400 and 1600CVH, plus the turbo. The Sabre was the ultimiate development I think: Mates girlfriend bought a slightly tired mid-80's SS1 (1600). It was like owning a badly built kit car, but with parts harder to trace... The panel fit and interior were bad - something to do with Reliant abandoning there own traditional GRP, and trying to use different materials for different body panels. Some were GRP, some injection moulded, some vac formed, all from different manufacturers. Each panel was bolted to a tubular frame (that was sort of part of the chassis) and kind of met at the edges. Ish. Having said that it was lively enough (not particularly light), and handled well. They owned it a few years, with only the odd actual minor running problem. But it seemed impossible to stop it getting quite tatty looking, and they took an enormous loss when they managed to sell it (after several months). I wouldn't turn an SST down, and that Sabre doesn't look *that* bad. They built the SS1 etc instead of an in-house little grp sports car based on a kitten chassis. Generally thought to be an error... (can't remember it's name though)

After a little Googling... The Reliant Cipher... Much better looking than the SS1. But with only 850cc's of raw power, I think not as exciting as it looked Now THAT, with a bigger engine (which is what they wanted to do) would be a good sportscar I reckon!
