Guys, I've probably made the biggest mistake in my life... I've just bought a Citroen BX !!! It is an '80s car, but does it have any retro-ness at all

Hmmm..I don't think its a mistake...maybe misguided but not a mistake What sort is it? Is it a basic stripped out early 1400 or a late GTI version? I have a feeling that the BX will recognised as a retro car within the next 5 years. They're fast disappearing. If its a good one keep it. If its sh@gged thrash it within inches of its life and give it good send off........

It's a 1991 model, with a 1400cc injection-equipped engine. Feels very modern and sensible, compared to my previous cars...
They're very common around here, and very highly regarded. Not at all classics, more like 'retired yuppiemobiles' !

There're in a sort of limbo world at the moment. Too old for taxi's, too new for retro. I know a few people who have had them and they have been OK, if you don't mind a different small item giving up the ghost every week! 1.4 needs to be thrashed to get it to move, so the motor can be somewhat "tired". Deisels have a good reputation and I think we all agree the GTi 16v will become sought after. Estates make sense, but you don't see so many of them. The non injected 1360 (1.4) engine is the same unit as in my ZS (except for the 8 port head), I think the injection 1.4's are different, but the same as 205's Have fun with the car. I bet it cost pennies to buy!

ps. The straight lines of the BX really compliment a load of alloy designs. Slap on a set of wider bigger ones and they look the business! Should be cheap too! Added benifit when parked and the suspension drops, it looks slammed! ;D

The car didn't exactly cost pennies, since similar BX's sell for around 2000 euros in Greece... I got mine for 750 euros, with FSH and 114000km. This particular example was surely not thrashed, as the guy I bought it from was the first owner and has only used the car for commuting. The price reflects the exterior condition, since many panels are dented The BX's after 1988 use the TU3JP engine, which is similar to the Type-150 engine, but has a more reliable top-end and uses a separate gearbox. As for modifications, I probably will go the 'Q-Car' way... Leave the dented panels on and use 15" Xantia steel rims, while installing a nice Mi16 engine under the bonnet ;D ;D ;D

That sounds good! My brother and I took a bonnet from a BX and are gonna adapt it to fit a smoothed-out EuroLook Mk3 Escort he's building (!) It's plastic so should be lighter, and it has no swage lines in - just flat! Is that a 3-door BX Estate in the picture? I never seen one of those before!!

A future classic of some sort for sure, but it was never going to replace the GS/A in quite the same way...
The amount of car auctions I went to 5 years ago where you'd see a seemingly never-ending line of scruffy traded-in BXs struggling to make £30... gawd...
