Water pump on the Esprit, you can see it, you can reach it, you can even get spanners on it, you can also get all but one bolt out....
That one bolt comes out about 1" with a million tiny turns of various bent and cut spaners but then it just hits the oil pump pulley... The only way to continue is to tap it with a hammer so it clears the edge of the puley turn it a bit more, tap it, more, etc... 3 hours later... it comes out.
Solution: One allen bolt - straight in.
Elise battery is interesting too, it's basically at the end of a vertical tunnel in the front of the car that is about half a mm narrower than the battery and there are loads of cables and sticky out bits all around the edges. If your battery doesn't have a handle.... doh!
Her smart roadster 3 lower plugs (3 pots 6 plugs), you have to take the back windows out, to get the back bumper out to find the official merc tool is curse word at pulling the plug sockets off and needs grinding to make it even half useful. 4 hours that one took....

exhaust manifold gasket on a mk2 golf and had the joy of doing it on a passat too.
4 allen head bolts sandwiched between the inlet and exhaust manifolds, 3inch deep, about 1inch between the two manifolds and facing the bulkhead. not easy, not fun.
HIDs into a new shape beetle, changing a bulb essentially, should take 30mins tops, this took over 4 hours and was a knuckle skinner.

I never had an issue changing clutch slave cylinder seals till the one on my old Saab 9000 Turbo went. Step 1, remove engine and gearbox........
I sold the car!

I've been really lucky in that 300s have bucket loads of space and everything is relatively simple. Gearbox changes are a bit difficult due to the weight but other than that... It's even nicer on mine because when I changed the engine I put all components up on top of the arch shelf where it is visible. Most jobs take less than an hour.
Shoguns on the other hand...

Changed all the shockers on several mk4 golfs and never went near the subframe?still pita jobs are clutch cable on a UNO turbo, there's a pulley halfway that bolts in UNDER the brake strengthening bar,I'm assuming due to being rhd? in fact, most jobs on an UNO turbo!!! Most moderns are a bumper off job to do headlight changes, the Mondeo mk3 is clever though,2 lollipop sticks and she's out!!! Ka inlet manifold. Sport Ka alternator, front bumper, headlight, pas pump, etc all to come off, complete ballache, autodata lists it as 2hrs!!!! Any job on a Laguna mk2 Any job on a big bum megane Trying to replace the individual bushes on e36 front arms, don't bother, buy the arm complete. BMW rear brakes are pretty easy I thought?took me about an hour a side? Turbo on a Volvo 2.4 v70,not too bad with minuscule tools and hands.
GOOD DESIGNS
BMW/merc rear brake adjusters, one wheel bolt out and a screwdriver sorted mine right out. Most 80's/90's Vauxhall stuff apart from aforementioned Corsa b stereos! Engine/gearbox swap on Corsa c,how easy? Corsa b rear shockers, longest part is taking the wheel off, although I think you can do it without!!! BMW oil filters Any job on older J cars, don't forget to bin that 13mm spanner!!!

Quite frankly I find it shocking the amount of disregard that manufacturers have for the most meanial of maintenance tasks. Anything more than 5 minutes for ANY exterior bulb is disgracefull. Might go some way to explaining why so many newer cars only have 1 headlight/brakelight. First time I changed the starter motor ona MK1 Mundano took me best part of a day and some very inventive use of extensions. First 'smiley face' Transit clutch rachet I changed took me half a shift. Fiddley b@stard thing. to that down to about half an hour wirh practice tho ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Remember taking 2 hours to undo 1 jubilee clip on an intake hose on a MK5 Escort TD. Couldn't get a single tool on it other than one of those 90degree screwdriver thingies, which meant turning the screw 1/8, then swapping ends of bent screwdriver, etc etc and repeat until ran out of expletives. All for the sake of positioning the clip slightly further round, - It took me 2 minutes to replace it !!!

Oil filter on a Mk3 Supra Turbo....the N/A is easy to get at - reach down and twist. The Turbo has a pressure based cooler & spigot system, so it's angled 80* down, right towards the engine mount and crossmember...you need to be a contortionist to get in there!
Likewise - bolting up the block drain & feed for the CT26 is annoying, i think because the 7M-GTE was a bit of a rush job/afterthought...

Not a normal maintenance job, but... I was once told I'd have to cut the frame on a bike where the exhaust manifold bolts had sheared off to get a drill in. I put it off for ages thinking "there must be another way!", tried everything, got loads of people round for a look and an opinion, took it to a couple of garages and eveyone seemed to agree. I eBay'd it and noticed that the buyer sold it on four weeks later. There's a pattern developing... Just about every job on my phase 2 Laguna! Oh yeah, and the headlight bulb in a megane......apparently. Any job on a Laguna mk2 Any job on a big bum megane I'm not sure I woul'd ve bought a Renault before this but I certainly wouldn't now.

I mainly work on BMWs and unless my subconcious is repressing some horrible memories I don't really think I've had many jobs that I thought were too terrible. I did change the clutch on an E30 318is and bolting the 2nd nut/bolt on the starter motor was a major ballache, it's hard up between the starter and engine block and you have to be a magician to get the nut on in the first place, I struggled for ages, got the nut on and tightened it up... I then got the ratchet, attachment and socket jammed against the starter and block, I ended up driving the car for two weeks before Bodieandoyle rescued the ratchet!

Oh yeah, and the headlight bulb in a megane......apparently. Yeah, my dad's got one. Apparently you have to take the wheel off and go in through the arch to get to the bulb. That's the price you pay for having such effective crash structures...

removing the rear bumper on my Triumph requires the removal of the petrol tank.
Chevrolet Camaro V6 spark plugs are really impossible without the aid of a lift and there a pig then. I know ive done it.
Oil pressure switch on a 1.4 mk3 ibiza requires removal of the manifold assembly for access.
Changing brake lines on a swing axle DAF. 9ft brake line on a car with a 5 foot wheelbase. The book says to remove the variomatic and suspension arms

Engine mount has to come off a mk3 1.4 Astra with PAS to change the alternator belt, which I didn't realise when my grandad called me saying his had snapped and I went to rescue him ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) I was going to mention this one! Was a real PITA. I think the 1.6's were like that too - any thing with a C##SE lump- though I might be wrong?
