No wonder that looks propper pro. might email you myself in the future. Is that by hand or by computer?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

interesting stuff I've got my final hand in date next week for my 'Volvo v70 for 2015' Autostyling module. I'm currently struggling with full A2 colour renders which are quite hard when your used to a3 ;D

Matt, if you're struggling with A2 but are fine with A3, sketch out an underlay at A3 & enlarge it to A2 (on 2 pieces of A3) on the photocopier. The three main 3/4 views here were done like that! Also, when it's scanned and composed in photoshop later, an A2 rendering is so much crisper than an A3 rendering

The darker red is marker (with some black pastel / pencil on the horizon) and the sky reflections are dome with just pastel (the chalk type, NOT the wax ones). Cut the pastel with talcum powder before applying it, and in order to get the pastel colours deeper, you need to use fixative (basically very thin spray varnish / unperfumed hairspray)so that the pastel can be layered - also stops it rubbing off. Beware though - the fixative can sometimes make the marker bleed, so practise first! The sharp white highlights are either whiote pencil or tippex (!!!) but tbh it's much easier & cheaper to 'apply' the pastel & highlights in photoshop - eg the 3/4 view here was drawn by hand & markered before being photoshopped. In photoshop, you can also undo mistakes!!!! IIRC, there are rendering tutorials on www.cardesignnews.com & also on www.carbodydesign.com/

I forgot to say - the most important thing is to keep drawing, & to keep practising!!!! A mate of mine (who now works for BMW) can produce renderings that are better than my photshopped one with just markers.....!!!! Copying photographs is a very good way to practise your rendering technique, and even tracing off the original pic will teach you a lot about the body surfaces & how to represent them. Old stuff can be good to render, due to the chrome but modern cars tend to have many more surface subtleties, so don't dismiss those either. If you (or other car design students on here ) have any questions etc, please don't hesitate to ask

cheers for the tip, i would never have thought of that generally i use as little markers as possible, sticking to pastils and pencils, then use a rubber to pick out the high lights. One of the main requirment of this current volvo project is that we are not allowed to use any photoshop

Tippex pens are good for spot highlights if you don't want to use gouache

PaulH, those are fantastic links! I'm about to start a 3D project for work using Swift 3D to draw some trucks that will then be exported as flash files for use on our new website (Hopefully) and as single images for brochure use etc. It will be easier than doing single images in illustrator from photos I hope.

Paul, how do you go about setting up a website like that? The format looks like something I could use to display my journalism portfolio. Cheers.

No idea I'm afraid - my brother set it all up for me! However, IIRC the gallery part is a free software download.
