Right, there has been a general slip in quality of posts on here,.. whilst I'm aware that people may want to get to know about each other this forum really isn't set up for socialising in that way. If you want to get to know each other better get on MSN or Skype, or you could PM each other, maybe even email etc. But the main forum I want free of non-car chatter. Before anyone suggests it there will not be an off-topic forum started for this purpose because that is the road to ruin. Whilst this may see a bit harsh and restrictive trust me, it is the best way to keep RR the sort of place worth visiting.
Please think before you post, and if you're bored and just want to chat, go and find some cars to chat about
HoTWire, do you ever consider a polite locking of some threads? This place seems unusual in that you almost never see that. It seems to me that would send out a message as to what is/isn't acceptable.
I do 100% agree on not having an off-topic forum area. People should get along to their local meet-up (or organise one) if they want to know more about their fellow RRers.

I do consider it,.. but the forum is fairly self policing,.. previously waaaay off topic threads get one or two replies (usually saying that the post is off topic) and then they dissapear down the forum. However recently the threads have been a bit more persistant. I've also not been able to read every thread on here as I'm working on the new forum code... ironically that will make it easier to spot off topic threads!
Hmmm, I tend to keep it car related, but I've been a little OT of late with one of my threads, although I guess that was car related too, I dunno, but I'm sure my situation is relevant to a few folks in here and could stop people landing themselves in grief in the future.
I tend to talk curse word to folks on MSN, but try to keep it car related.
here's a retro pic as compensation

Well said sir, don't know whether it is a good idea to add something to the welcome/registration email ?
Retro-rides is different to most forums (And all the better for it), and I am sure many people arrive here initially thinking its the same...... where you can just blather on about all sorts of O/T tripe.
A statement in the welcome email asking people to not post non car related stuff would maybe help.
I must admit I have just ignored a lot of it lately, perhaps I should have replied that it wasnt on-topic
As you say the forum is pretty good at self moderation, but that only works when "we" as forum member moderate it IYSWIM
we are responsible not just for what we say, but also for what we don`t say
Be good to get back to some serious J-tin/Berg/cleaned threads and less "does my bum look big in this" sh1te
I don't think theres too much OT in here. Its still friendly and car orientated without going to like some forums where unless its liek a proper tech question you get a topic lock!

i was a fiarly active member on a pretty good alfa forum untill they split up lots of "room" including a general chat. caused more bloody arguments and hassle that it was worth. very little alfa chat there anymore. and you get people wiht liek 10000+posts cos they post for the sake of it.
I think this post will serve as a bit of a heads-up, and nip all these "look at my skateboard" "I did this really funny coloured dump" kind of posts in the bud. You can't blame people for wanting to know more about one another, but as you say there's MSN etc for that. If Microsoft hadn't closed all the chatrooms I'd have suggested an RR chatroom for people who would like to talk about general stuff. And I'm not keen on a general OT board either, I think that'd take away what RR is about.
On the other hand i've been on two very succesful car forums with general or off topic boards and its helped the fourms no end. Eveybody knows everyone else, have lots of laughs. Such off topic posts don't seep onto the main car related boards because of it and the general feeling of the board is much imporved in my opinion. My 2 cents, can't see why it wouldnt help here and think it'd much improve the forum.
well said HTW, general chat boards are so full of sh!te!
following on from the comment about peoples number of posts - personally i think the number of posts should be removed or hidden. Its a pointless stat, if someones got something to say that is valid/interesting/ontopic etc then it should be said and would be read. peoples post count means fcuk all.
