............and there was me thinking that this was a community........... As you can see, by comparison to the many, i post curse word all. If ive got something to say then i will say it, whether it is curse word or not. You cannot possibly have a workable forum of this size and popularity without it, occassionally, going off topic. The fact that it has been highlighted clearly suggests that the "off topic" threads are popular enough to get people, indigenous to this forum, posting for it to be noticable. Is it REALLY so harmfull? If you don't want to participate you don't post, surely? Ok, so some of the material really isnt in the spirit of the RR edict but is that any worse than reading 48 friggin replies of " great car" and "I'm having a trouser moment" type response to some cars which are outstanding for the very fact that they have four wheels and an engine? The very real danger is that you will curse word off the genuinely interested by laying down hard and fast rules. You now have Daverapid tugging forelocks and doing the 1000 appologies bit for feeling responsible for posting threads which have now incurred the wrath of the mods. Dave is quite possibly one of the nicest and genuine guys that posts here and he is the primary reason why i came onto these forums from the PC boards. Does anybody REALLY want these boards to go the way of the PC forum? Conversation is the very lifeblood of any forum, yes some threads will be off topic, its part of the wide, varied and wonderful community that has grown and is still growing on RR. don't kill the Goose that is laying the golden eggs, you may wake up one morning and find this a soulless place devoid of any personality, spirit, fun or adventure. If you create a monster you cannot assume that you can keep it on a collar and lead. The forum is very popular, it works, people love it,people care. If it aint broke don't fix it!

Oh and by the way, i have just had the course of the rest of my life altered forever ( I'm 41) because the other morning i took a call to tell me that my fit, strong, active Dad had suffered a Heart attack. It sort of focuses your mind to whats really important, like having silly aliases isnt that important is it? Somebody who is curious to know the real ids of the people behind said aliases isnt really causing that much of a kerfuffle in the great scheme of things are they? Just keep it real and don't start believing that this is the centre of the universe eh? Its not.

No they aren't, and no-one said they were. Steady on old chap, I think we're all saying much the same thing, which is simply to try and keep it car-related and convivial. i'm sorry to hear about your dad FWIW.

Robmajorca mate...I hope your dad is going to be OK. Thankyou very much for the kind words,it really is appreciated. Admin,mods..whoever is in control, I think this thread should be removed or locked if possible. I've taken the hint, and won't be posting any more chatty off topic type posts. I feel that if this particular thread is left running it will result in arguements, and TBH I feel bad enough for causing problems as it is without it getting out of hand. Lets all be friendly, wether or not we agree.

I've also not been able to read every thread on here as I'm working on the new forum code... ironically that will make it easier to spot off topic threads! I'm partial to iron(y)

I think that HotWire and I are both trying to avoid the same thing, and it's something that we've both witnessed first hand. When we start talking about each other more than the cars then we lose the reason we're all here in the first place. Did you join to talk about your favourite colour, your age or your shoe size? No-one is upset with people for starting non-car threads, but it's my opinion that they are a slippery slope to social club instead of car enthusiasts forum.
Off-topic threads are acceptable at times, there's plenty of reasons to post them - births, deaths, rants and thanks (rants and thanks - hey that's quite cool!) are always going to have a place because we're all human, but frivolous chit-chat isn't going to help the forum long term.
No-one is trying to stop a community developing, that is always gonna happen. Without any frivolous threads at all I'm on first name terms with loads of members, and I've met even more - hell, I'm going to Japan today with some geezer I know from here! If you really do want to be negative about a car, a forum or a person or find out someones name, age or music preference then use the PM system...it works (you should see my inbox!). Help keep the forum as it is, that's why we all joined.
This is also my last post until I'm back from Japan, I expect to see full-on Retro-Rides positivity when I get back, OK? Keep up the good work. ;D

i don't think anyone needs to apologise for anything. No-one has been singled out by the mods, and there havent been that many way OT threads. I think it was a case of 'nipping it in the bud' so to speak. As the forum has grown in size i guess it just needed a bit of a re-focus - not just to certain individuals, but to us all to remind us what this place is about. one of my concerns about R-R has been that it will become to big that its quality will deteriorate - i hope that doesnt happen, and its clear HTW has no intention of letting this happen. As far as i see it, there are always going to be the odd thread with an off topic post or joking/chatty comment which is understandable as we all build up a picture of each others characher. However, there is no need for off topic threads to be started.
