Off topic forums are a nightmare to moderate. They can cause any number of arguments and generally I find them terribly terribly dull. If you want to get to know the other people on the board make the effort to go to the local meet ups and shows. I can definately agree with that. I'm a moderator on oldschool.co.nz and to be honest, our "Off Topic" section has caused nothing but issues. I absolutely love and admire this forum, the way it works with everyone getting on so well I think has a lot to do with it only being automotive related chat allowed. It leaves far less room for people to get bent out of shape about things that should be irrelevant in a car forum. It's great, keep it up guys and heed the warnings. Off topic posts/threads and all that guff, is a freakin' nightmare! (not a good one, like Mr. Nightmare's Racing's simply astounding projects, more a bad one, like a barried up base spec Nova with a VX-R and Irmscher badging)

Yep, agreement, a few places I can think of (without naming) that i don't go too often, the OT stuff is everywhere, and it does force newcomers or occasional visitors out as teh regulars rule the roost, and looks pretty sad too. generally RR has the right format! it gets a bit O/T but there is a limit. The people pics were ok as I'm glad i'll recognise a few faces at CaRS and we can all get on for real. Keep up the good quality all.

to be honest, if this forum turned into an off-topic general-chat "hey guess what I've had for breakfast" kinda place, i'd sort of drift off.... i've really not got the time to wade through stuff that doesn't interest me to find a few threads that do. i can put up with the odd tenuous link, and i can see why the occasional "FAO whoever" is handy as the PMs on this board are easily overlooked, but I'm glad to see it's not just me that thinks the general standard is getting sloppy

due to all of this i decided that it wasnt a good idea to start a thread about the search function having a spazz ;D ;D if you search for big searches (i searched for opel, with it only in the thread title and with 99 results) it doesnt like it. no biggy like, i mean, i found a way around it eventually, just thought that someone should know anyways, retros

Totally agree. There have been too many off topic threads on here off late, and its not what I come on here for. Fair enough people might to want to get to know people better but again as has already been said there are plenty of messenger services to be used. This has been the only car forum that I have frequented on a regular basis and the reason for that is because I have always enjoyed the subject matter of the topics, at least until recently. don't get me wrong the majority are still good and worth reading, but there are a lot that could be found of countless other forums car related or not. Everyone is guilty of going slightly off topic but it should get kept to a minimum. I also agree that there shouldnt be an off topic area as doubtless as that would totally spoil this forum and drag it down to a much lower level.

I think an off topic area is a good idea, if you don't like it, you're not obliged to read/post. We are after all only human and conversation cannot exist solely around cars, things would get a little boring if it did! ok ok, I know that this forum is about cars and that's why we're all here, but it can't be the be all and end all of everything, most forums I visit have an off topic area and help to keep the 'wheat from the chaff' as it were.
I would imagine there are fears on here of such a section watering down the quality/union of this board, but as I said before, if you have no desire to post/read then don't do so, it's very easy really.
It could have quite a positive effect in that anyone who wishes to talk cars and directly related topics only do not have to wade through any 'inferior' posts, and anyone who wants to talk about unrelated topics can do so without fear of being repremanded for having a soul.
I think an off topic chat area should be the subject of some serious consideration.

A chat room elsewhere for RR-ers may be OK, but I'd never have time to go on there! I love it here, nothing watered down. Here's some retro action outside my house today.

I feel really bad to be honest,as I'm the one that started 2 of the threads that are causing the problems here. I really didn't come on here to ruin a great forum. I was merely being friendly, but I can see that I was "chatting" in the wrong place. To anyone that I've upset, bored or offended by my "getting to know eah other" threads, and in particular Hotwire I offer my sincere apologies. This is truly one of the very best forums, and I'd hate to be responsible for it's downfall or quality reduction.
