Something happened today that will change my life.
I feel numb and I don't think it's hit home yet.
We organised a Karting Grand Prix for a load of us from work.
In the semi, on the last lap, I lapped my mate Rob. Odd I thought as he'd been reasonably fast all day.
Pulling into the pits, I was ready with the Driving Miss Daisy jokes for him.....
Despite the valiant efforts of my colleagues, the track staff and the paramedics, Rob died on the start finish straight from a suspected massive heart attack.
Rob was only 43 years old, didn't smoke or drink much.
I've sat at a desk next to Rob for about 4 years. I'd always admired/envied him for being so bloody sensible. He'd paid his mortgage off early, he bought a new small diesel car every 3 years, he saved every month, he had adequate pension provisions.
Driving back home from the hospital tonight in my sensible Fiat Punto the sun was just setting. I was on some empty winding roads - and weirdly I thought of the recent post about was it a good idea to buy a Jensen Interceptor (though there are loads of other similar posts).
All I can say after today, is do it, embrace it, enjoy it, 'cause you just have no idea when the tenuous grip we all have on life will come to a sudden and unexpected stop.
I know, when I've picked my self up from this, my outlook on life will be very different (and trust me it won't include a Fiat Punto as my daily driver)
Sorry to lay this on you, came home to an empty house as my wife is away at the mo', had to do something positive.
Be safe and enjoy tomorrow.
RIP Rob - one of life's genuinely nice guys

"All I can say after today, is do it, embrace it, enjoy it, 'cause you just have no idea when the tenuous grip we all have on life will come to a sudden and unexpected stop."
very good advice. except its the thing iv done, embraced and enjoyed that will probably kill me. nay that buggy WILL kill me.
was it indoor go karting? they should really have a warning on those things. i went once and i felt absolutely horrible after. the fumes are way too much

sorry to hear about your friend.
totally agree with what you say. I had a boring VW bora (oddly enough) diesel, then my dad died fairly suddenly of cancer (6months start to finish). So i went and bought the car i had alway wanted to own. An Alfa 156 Veloce.
I hope things pick up for you.

Sorry to hear that fella words just seem so inadequate Take some comfort that he died having fun with his mates.... there are a lot worse ways to go and he would not have known anything about it..... But you are right..... "this life is not a rehersal or a test......... were it a test we would have recieved further instructions on what to do, where to go and what to do when we get there"

Thats a terrible thing to happen. What you say about embracing life and enjoying it is so bloody true. I had a job i didnt like anymore, my family and i lived well, had a nice home, expensive car, never wanted for anything but one day on the spur of the moment my wife and i decided to sell up and curse word off abroad, something we always thought of doing. So on that March morning two years ago we loaded all our wordly goods into the back of a 500 quid Renault Trafic and set off on our great adventure. Many people, my best mate included, would love to do the same but are worried. My mate tells me that 15 yrs from now, the house will be paid for and he will have a good pension so he will do it then. How does he know that he will be around 15 years from now? Who knows anything? The only thing i do know is that you have to grab life by the balls and LIVE IT!! We don't have the money we did, my job here is wibblepoo but it pays the bills but we are happy, we have seized the chance and done it. As you have discovered, in the most horrendous way, nobody can predict the future and nobody knows when its their time to go. I can only echo your words and tell people to really live their lives to the full, you will be much happier and so much more contented if you do. My best wishes to you, i can only imagine the shock you feel. Take care.

nothing i can say.
RIP Rob. in todays day and age it is good to know that there are still genuine good people around like him. at least he did die doing something he really did enjoy.
what you say about living life is so true...it is so easy to get sucked into just living day after day and not doing anything exciting and not grabbing oppotunties when you should.
my thoughts are with you through what must be a terrible time.

My condolences. As you say it is a very sobering thought.
It is one of my concerns that I spend too much time working and not enough time with my family and friends and doing the things I really enjoy. I normally run my social life around work committments, really need to change that.

I can only echo things said above. Like Tony CC, I lost my father ten years ago very suddenly and I totally know what he means. Life is just too short to be boring and to hurry home to watch Eastenders. Get out there, grab life by the balls and do something amazing - even if it is only amazing to you.
