I've already had that suggested, so if anyone sees a decent Mk1 donor plese give me a shout... How hard is the conversion? I assume you did yours yourself? I didn't convert my old Mk1 myself, bought it ready '16v'd' but I wouldn't hesitate to do one myself now having changed the Mk2 engine and seen how it all works. Very straightforward conversion by the looks of it and loads of people have done it so tons of info available. Ideally you want to start with a Mk1 GTI though so you can run the 16v on fuel injection, if you start with a non-GTI you'd end up finding it hard work with the wiring/fuel pumps etc, and end up having to go with twin carbs instead, depends what you fancy really? |

That's a good point, I never thought of that, shame I can't use a (cheaper) base model car though, how does the Auto in yours (I am thinking of the right car aren't I?) cope with the extra power?

Prophet, that actually sucks the balls off a rather large donkey  , gutted for you. If you struggle with the ins company, I do have that Oak green MKII 5 door sat here, in reality, unless I spend uber money, it'll never be a minter, and the heater matrix needs doing!, just give me a shout and we'll come to some arrangement or something, it's MOT'd for a year, I may even be able to "lend" you the car if I don't spend too long doing the wedge. (you'd have to tax/insure it and that). I knew there was a reason I keep spare cars |

as has been said - get yourself to a doctor and get some written facts regarding what you've done to yourself! Your back is much more important than your car, i know it's hard to admit Whilst the 'whiplash brigade' have spoiled it for those with a real accident injury (nobody will think it's real), if you have a real injury you deserve something for the hassle/discomfort/time off work. and if that little financial help ends up going towards a 16v Mk1, then that's your business |

Just a thought, but why not go to the person who hit you and ask her to settle outside of insurance company. If shes not had a prang for 20 years she wont want to lose her NCB and she will probably put you in better pocket than £250.
i (ashamed) went into the back of a car in my first year of driving and after isnpecting the damage offered to buy the guy a new rear bupmer. he accepted. only cost me £50 and my insurance stayed clean.

I'd agree if it weren't for the injury thing. Did something similar to you in my early motoring days, woman even let me drive her Fiesta with dented bumper to be repaired as I'd got an honest face  Our Carina recently got scraped in a car park by a 4wd, been quoted £300+VAT for repair as it's caught edge of wing, bonnet and bumper. I was hoping they'd do it outside insurance, but seems they're going about it the complicated way. Oh dear.... Hope you're on the mend now Prophet. |

Well, I got an answerphone message on Friday from her insurace company saying "Mrs Smith (not real name) has admitted full responsibility and we'd like to get you into a hire vehicle as soon as possible and get your car fixed." I called them back this morning and it appears that's what they are going to do, I'll get calls today from CCL car hire and Brooklyn Ford, the local insurance approved repairer, to see when's conventient for pickup etc..
Still slightly worried about letting the car go to the repairer but I did make it very clear that if the car is declared total loss I want salvage so hopefully they shouldn't loose it.... I did suggest getting the assessor to my place but she was just like "they usually do assessments at the repair shop so they can speak to the people doing the repair" hmmm....
My back is still getting worse but the painkillers the doctor gave me are a life saver...

My 1.2 litre hire car (wtf! I thought it was supposed to be comparable, oh well, at least it's a car) will be here between 11 and 12...

Argh! As if having your car mangled wasn't bad enough!!!
Does it have the "girly button" that makes the steering ultra light? That makes for interesting manouevers if you're used to driving cars with heavier steering.... ;D

I didn't even drive it yet, I've borrowed a 1.0 litre 1991 Mk3 Polo, think I'd rather drive that! I know what you mean - not exactly chick magnets are they? I had to drive them when I worked as a car transporter. Doesn't help that they come in pastel shades most of the time!! I like the old Panda - especially the Sisley 4x4 thing. I'd happily smoke around in one. But yeah the dreaded tin worm seems to have devoured most of them... Would make a nice home for an Uno Turbo lump or a Gixxer... |

Sorry to hear that prophet, one bit of advice.... get booked in to see a Physio NOW  Pain killers will not sort your back out, ask to be referrred by your GP, if they wont then Book up a private appointment, if she has admitted liability and they are going to settle you need to get the Back problem assessed now  don't leave it and don't just keep taking pain killers I had a Bad car accident when I was 17, hospital found the 4 broken ribs where they join the spine but failed to spot the 3 compression fractures at the base of my spine and 4 at the top 3 years later all the cartilage between the damaged vertebrae had worn away, leaving me in considerable pain not to mention 1.5" shorter At the age of 20, according to the physio who x-rayed me and finally sorted it out as best he could, I ended up with wear to my spine comparable to someone in their mid to late 60`s through natural causes  which will never get better only deteriorate further  Its not much fun..... So If I were you, don't trust your GP or the hospital you went to they will only ply you with drugs, get to a Physio for a full assessment, I know an excellent one in Ipswich, who I would reccomend if you cant find anyone that suits locally. Sorry to put a downer on it but get it looked at now and it may save you the same grief |
