Ciao Retroisti.... Maybe not sor retro but a good story.... Chinese car manufacturer stole the drawings of the Chevy Spark from it's Korean manufacturing plant and built the Cherry QQ and to top it of silly man, millionair Malcolm Bricklin (of Bricklin car fame) is starting to import it to the US and selling it ca 1/3 cheaper than the Spark...... Cherry QQ Chevy Spark There's also a story about a Chinese company that has copied Bosch ABS braking system and patented it in China, no wonder they can sell stuff so cheap, NO development costs...... DP says: Both Volvo & Porsche are making cars in China, where's the world come to.....

Now that sort of thing I DO find interesting! I suppose if one manufacturer makes just a slight difference (e.g. different radiator grill) 'they' can claim they have not 'COPIED' if case went to court.

It wouldn't surprise me if the design rights to the Matiz (cus that's what it is essentially) were sold on quite legally. Italdesign-Giugiaro designed the thing for Fiat originally didn't they? EDIT: Just found this ;D ;D ;D "GM Daewoo files suit against Chinese auto company ap ^ | 5-9-05 Posted on 05/09/2005 8:09:32 AM PDT by Dan from Michigan NewsFlash Home | More Michigan News GM Daewoo files suit against Chinese auto company 5/9/2005, 10:41 a.m. ET The Associated Press BEIJING (AP) — Automaker GM Daewoo is suing Chinese carmaker Chery Automobile Co. for allegedly copying one of its vehicles, according to a newspaper report. GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. is seeking 80 million yuan ($9.7 million) in compensation, alleging Chery's QQ mini car copied its Daewoo Matiz and Spark brands, which Chery denies, the China Daily reported. The Beijing Number One Intermediate People's Court confirmed Sunday it accepted a lawsuit filed by GM Daewoo against Chery, according to the China Daily. GM Daewoo initially sued Chery in December in Shanghai but the defendant objected on jurisdictional grounds, leading the Supreme People's Court to appoint the Beijing-based court to handle the case, the report said. The Matiz was launched in the South Korean market in 1998, according to the bill of indictment, the paper says. GM Daewoo, an Inchon, South Korea, unit of Detroit-based General Motors Corp., authorized Shanghai Automotive Co. to produce and sell the Spark in China in 2003 based on the Matiz's design and technology, the paper reports. GM Daewoo also alleges Chery used a camouflaged Matiz car to pass tests and obtain authorization from the government to produce and sell QQ." www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1399525/posts oh dear!!

I think this kind of thing has always happened - the USSR used to do it. Not sure whether it was blatant blueprint theft, but definitely industrial espionage of some sort, with a few tweaks. With China being the counterfeit capital of the world for other goods, it doesn't surprise me that it's happening with bigger stuff too - China is renown for being very good at copying products and making them cheaper. And hey, the Yanks did it to us with the worlds first supersonic plane - they stole our research and blueprints and made the X-1 ;D

Of all the things to copy, a fuggin Daewoo Matiz, that is poor form. I have travelled in one of those and can confirm that they are utter WAZ, what a Chinese copy must be like, doesn’t bear thinking about.
Surely theres no need to go round stealing drawings though, I bet they just bought a Daewoo and dismantled it and measured it and made copies of everything.

Apparently it started legitimately: "GM Daewoo, an Inchon, South Korea, unit of Detroit-based General Motors Corp., authorized Shanghai Automotive Co. to produce and sell the Spark in China in 2003 based on the Matiz's design and technology, the paper reports." BTW, I always preferred the TU-144 - it was faster, less reliable, more 70s tastic and more fugly which are all attributes I find attractive in cars too ;D

I read that the Chery version is outselling the Chevrowoo by a long way in China. That's a kick in the balls for GM I bet. I agree with you Mr_B - they could have copied summat better than a bleedin' Matiz. I had to drive one once... terrifying.

i think gm is suing anither chinese firm at the moment because of a blatant copy of the frontera, which i think they were trying to sell in europe for about half the price of the original. it never passed any of our crash tests and i think they made it out of cheese and cardboard or something.
chinese board room", we need a new car"
"how about pinching an aging rubbish 4x4 from gm europe"
"do you think anyone will notice"
"nah, consummerist europe will have forgotten about it already"
"ok ill get me gemmy"

Nice one. What is it with them stealing sh!te car designs?! I mean, if you're gonna clone a supermini or a 4x4 surely you'd start with a best-seller?! ;D

IMO, looking at the cars being produced today, everybody copies everybody.. so damn boring.
I have to disagree, especially when you consider how similar cars looked like in the 50's and 60's...even in the late 80's you have cars that looked distressingly similar!
To the untrained eye its possible to confuse a Singer with a Simca, a Datsun with a Toyota or a 1991 Escort with a similar era BMW Compact. Todays manufacturers seem to be making a real effort to churn out something different.
But what is interesting is how many Chinese car manufacturers are producing cars today in huge volumes. Can't blame them though, many mainstream manufacturers put their oar in to get the captive Chinese markets kick started.
