Open window. Drive faster. ;D Or if you have them, open the quarterlight fully (so it's ducting air into the car) - this works extremely well even at very low speeds ie when in traffic.

A quick yahoo search got me an option. i don't think our 'summer' is worth £500 to me though, i could have a posh Sierra for that. www.nfauto.co.uk/acheat.htm

That combined A/C / heater unit looks interesting! I wonder if it can go as hot as the Amazon's heater though? ;D

Land Rovers rule, I'm also a fan of the cruise control lever allowing the farmer/4x4er to walk alongside his/her slowly moving vehicle, or put his/her feet up in the cab. ---- Good point about the AC heat I forgot about that bit. on a frosty morn no waiting 10 mins to defrost.

Vintage Air in the states do some good kits, but anything that saps power, is heavy and takes up valuable space is the enemy in my book. It always makes me smile when you see a convertible with the roof up and the windows shut in the height of summer... Air con. No thank you.
I drove through Death Valley in a old Cadillac, windows down, plenty of fluid for us, all good. You can smell and feel stuff with the windows open, although when you touch your finger on your leg and a small pad of sweat would instantly appear and then evaporate when you removed it. You know it's hot ;D

I was expecting a mention of the buggy. I agree on the outdoors thing, It did get sweaty last year going to some shows etc though, just got me thinking, and making good progress on the motorway is best with the windows up. I plan to have the T tops offthis year though That window thing looks interesting.

Swamp cooler. As it's an aircooled dub thang, expect prices to be astronomical! I'd like one just for show like.
I don't think I've ever had a car with AC, or at least if it had it it never worked. Sounds like too much of a pain in the ass to me - saps power, uses fuel, and needs recharging / maintenance. And like bryn says, driving in the summer is much more enjoyable with the windows down - looking at the honeys on the street isn't as much fun behind glass ;D. Nah, too much bother.

Aircon on both cars - tempted to strip it out of one (and leave it in other just to keep it "complete"). I've used it once properly, driving it back home from London after buying it, traffic was totally stopped and it was a scorching heatwave. Every so often I put it on just to make sure it still works, but really not much point it being there.
On the other hand, my dad uses his aircon absolutely loads and never, ever has the windows down! Not even a tiny bit. Rubbish! What's the point of owning a car if you can't drive around with the window down!

aircon absolutely robs power, i wouldn't have it on anything but a company luxo-barge really. however a lot of mid-retro cars from sort of the mid 80's onwards can be fitted with a factory kit, as long as that model was sold in the USA, AUS or Japan which seem to be the biggest market for airconned cars. Most VW's from sort of Mk1 Golf era onwards had the option in certain territories (my mk2 rocco has a fuse location for it, and i saw a japanese one recently which had the compressor etc) Lotus Cortina's sold in singapore had it fitted as standard.... mk4 'tinas in AUS had it fitted too, so really the same kit should fit UK cars. Similarly, whilst the Vauxhall Chevette never had aircon the Isuzu Gemini did, so it should be possible to fit it. personally I'd just wind the windows down, turn up the stereo to make up for the wind noise, and rest my elbow on the ledge for that one-tanned-arm summer driving look The only time I ever used to use it was in the Quattro, as it had a leaky exhaust manifold. Fresh air vents used to leak exhaust fumes into the cabin, but if you plonked the aircon on whatever filtering/refrigiration it went through used to remove the fumes. That'll explain the 15mpg then!

I've had aircon in a couple of cars but not working. The Olds has it but someone has unhooked a few bits of it to save fuel. Do you buy a 7 litre car to worry about fuel? Pah.
I've driven cars I don't own that do have it and for this reason I'm going to fix thhe AC in the Olds. Summer in the city in the rush hour.... AC is luuuurvely.....
You could get those swamp coolers on a bunch of yank cars back in the day but the rat rod crowd have pushed the price of that sort of thing up now. I neary bought one of eBay a few years ago for like $20 but the shipping was going to be imense so I didn;t bother. Prices are ten times that now.

Best bit is posher Sierra's come with it! They came with something called 'air con' but it was more 'con' than anything else. Certainly didn't involve cold air. It was removed from mine due to being a waste of time.

Did someone mention Vintage Air? Head of the company built this 53 Stude a few years ago. It ran 219mph at Bonneville with the air conditioning ON ;D ;D
