As of this evening, I have my car back!
Some of you may remember a thread a few weeks ago, when I was trying to trace some driveline noises & whining. The timescale in which the noise worsened was alarming (even for someone who is used to BMC cars...), so it was entrusted into the care of Noddy, an old Volvo expert who is ex-South Service (a well known Amazon specialist). It turned out that the diff was completely fubared - not just a worn & chipped CROWNwheel, but also the diff carrier was wrecked too..... I must admit though that given the interesting sounds coming from the axle, it wasn't a huge surprise!
One reconditioned axle later (including a new CROWNwheel & pinion and a secondhand diff carrier) and it's soooooo quiet!!!! My wallet is quite a bit lighter, but as I'm intending to keep the old bus for a long time, I didn't see the point in cutting corners.
It has also just been MOTed - went straight through with no advisories - the only prior work being a rear axle strap (gets eaten through by the big bore exhaust - usually lasts a few years), a rear suspension bush that came apart when the axle was removed (all other bushes were ok) & some duck tape on a rear arch.
It's so good to have it back! ;D I bet my neighbours are really pleased too
