Continuous insurance from early 2011 if not SORN'd

Well obviously the law you have broken is the new one saying your car has to be insured if its not SORNed, that don't sound like a grey area to me.

As for transfering insurance onto another car when selling the original, the obvious answer is to send the tax back for the car your selling and SORN it, why is that an issue? are people selling cars in such bad condition that they wont sell without tax on them? its the buyers responsibilty to make the car legal when he takes it away so why the worry?

i like how people are applauding another way to punishes the motorists with ever increasing fines and paper work. its a money making scheme which will no doubt be using the pay up or else method, to bully and scare people in lining other peoples pockets.

I'm quite willing to be shot down on this but, even if your motor insurance allows you to drive other cars, that car must still have been insured in another persons name. Otherwise if caught by a ANPR camera, it would come back as un-insured.

I can see why people resist new laws, its the principle of the thing, but personally i don't have enough cash to have ANY of my possesions unisured, i've had 2 cars stolen and 2 burnt out over the years. One that was burnt and one that was stolen were off the road for mods/repairs but i had both insured anyway, things can happen to cars parked off the road the same as it can to those being used.

Very true, however the hours spent by the side of the road and at the car pound after seizure are ones that nobody gets back. A mate of mine was insured in this very manner, yet still had to pay to get the car back, and even was summonsed to court! The charges were dropped when he got there, but it was a day off work and paying the pound fees he could have done without.

Adrian flux email your policy to you, I'm sure other companies would do the same, we printed it out and taxed the truck the same day as taking out the insurance last year.

If I needed to buy another car while using the Moose I would do exactly what I did when I bought the Moose which is to add it to my insurance so I could drive it straight away. My insurance would then charge me the appropriate fee for an additional car + an admin fee. When I then sold the blue beast I would tell my insurance it was sold. If any rebate was due to me they would send it to me by post (as they have done before, less the standard admin fee).

The key here is not to use some Compare The Elephant Me Happy type website and pick the cheapest price. The key here is to pick an insurance company which understands your needs as a driver and as a serial owner of old/modified cars.

When I switched between the Oldsmobile and the Pontiac they were happy to cover both cars at the same time without any extra premium for a couple of days while we did the handover.

If I sell my Mustang I would expect the purchaser to deal with any insurance issues. Once (s)he has signed the V5C it is their problem not mine.

My cars are worth sufficient that I would cry a lot if my garage burnt down or they got nicked or something. So I insure them, regardless.

I don't see why anyone sees this as a “money making scam”. The cost of prosecution usually outweighs the fees gained in fines. This is why fixed penalties were brought in for certain offences. Even then they often barely cover the cost of processing the paperwork. Also the DVLA is not (as I understand it) in any way connected with insurance companies, the MID or the operation of this system.

Perhaps this new law / regulation is sponsored by the ABI though…

I don't see how its a “punishment”? You either insure it or SORN it. Simples.

Many insurance companies do “off road” policies to cover laid up cars with no road risks but third party and any over cover you need.

Again, if you are messing about with cars and scrapping them and what ever then you just fill in the paperwork required. Its part of taking responsibility for yourself. I'm about to strip and scrap a car so I'll see then if that process has become too horribly complex, and doubtless whine like a baby about it then if it has, but all of this seems straight forward enough to me.

With this whole “I can't afford to insure...” well, sad fact of life is there is some stuff you can afford and some stuff you can't. Want to know why I don't drive a '68 Roadrunner Hemi?

That's what I've been saying to my insurance company, who won't let me add the car (or transfer it) to my current policy. I tried to get it covered when he bought it to drive it home and they told me I couldn't because it's not in my name but I could drive it (third party) on my current policy which entitles me to drive any other car that isn't in my name. I have specifically asked in three separate phone calls if this would apply even if the car isn't insured elsewhere and they've confirmed it to be the case. To be honest it's frustrating because I don't feel right driving it knowing it would get picked up on ANPR.

I find it vary hard to accept a Government department would do something like SORN (that makes them nothing), so I would think it would be negligible to carry out. Using the same principle, sending out fines would also be negligible, as they rely on most just paying up, which they do. It's only when they get to the stage of passing it on to a debt collection agency that they might incur another cost.
Therefore, it's the sending out of fine letters and relying on people to pay up that's the money making exercise.
