Continuous insurance from early 2011 if not SORN'd

No problem with that here tbh. I'm not really sure why you'd want to have your car taxed but not insured unless you are trying to get away with driving without insurance and if it helps cut down on uninsured drivers then thats not a bad thing.

Why? if its on a SORN they cant drive it and if its taxed it'd be insured.

If you buy a new one and transfer the insurance onto new one, means your going to have to sorn the car you want to sell, meaning ther person coming to buy it is going to have to tax it.

I'm all for stopping people driving uninsured but a better way would be to adopt the Ozy way of the road tax carrying 3rd party cover.

+1 ive said this for a long time, your tax is in date the police know your covered, and if you want an independant insurance to up it to tpft or fully comp thats up to you, would make life a whole lot easier

with traders policies i guess when you sell a car to a trader you fill in that bit of the v5 and the car is exempt from being SORNed until a new owner registers the purchase when they buy it of a trader? :/

You just keep adding cars and keep the sorns up to date, i just phone up and they do it their and then, and then send me a list in the post with my updates.

Get a trade policy,far easier,you know your always covered then.can't see a problem with this in principle.after all,sorn was a pain initially but it's part of life now.easy to get round if you forget anyway.

i'm sure there'll be a grace period which should eliminate most of those occurances...

What if you're not a trader?

I currently have my Scirocco taxed but not insured. I'd rather not send the tax back, as I could sell it at any minute, but I can't afford to insure it, because I'm under 25, and therefore am a nun and kitten killing maniac who must be charged ridiculous amounts, plus if I'd taken out a new policy on the MX-5 rather than swapping mine, I'd put my self back 10 months on my no-claims.

I wouldn't have a problem with this, if the DVLA could be trusted to wipe their own arses, let alone keep up with people taxing/un-taxing cars every 30 seconds. Or if they'd pay you back the full, exact amount of tax, not to the nearest month.

If I declared my scirocco sorned, (due to removing it's insurance), on the 10th of the month, and sold it on the 20th, then I'd be out 20 days worth of road tax, and the buyer would be out 10 days worth due to having to re-tax it strait away so they can drive it home.

It's either a stupid, un-thought out system, or a sneaky way of making more money from car tax, without actually putting tax up.

As has been said, there's much more sensible ways around making sure everyone's insured. For a start actually punishing they properly when they get caught, I know someone who crashed a car he wasn't insured on, writing off 2 other cars, he received a 2 week ban and a £200 fine. Complete curse word take, that's probably cheaper than it would have been for him to insure the car in the first place.
