I bought this at the start of the summer from phil2600 of this very forum after he bought it as an mot failure and dragged it into awesomeness. There's a build thread on here somewhere but I can't find it but basically Phil got it through it's mot then fitted heavy duty lowering spring, 2 new front wings, new sump and some very cool refurbed revo alloys wheels among many other things. After the fluster cuck that was my old m535i I just wanted something I could enjoy without it breaking down, going on fire or being a total rotting sh1t box. When I was a kid my Dad used to buy write offs and tatty auction stuff, which he'd do up and sell (he was a painter and panel beater and a deal he once did on a mk4 Cortina put a dormer extension on our house). One day he went to the auction and came back with an extreme povo ex district nurse spec Mini 850cc. As it did about 800mpg and my old man was tight wad it became our family car, which was fine until we needed to travel from Scotland to South Wale on our holidays. There was just no way we here going to get 4 people plus all our stuff in that little mini so my Dad arranged to get a loan of his mates car for the holiday. When we went up to the lockup to pick the car out rolled a cleaming moonracker blue Rover SD1 2600S, which was to be our car for the next 2 years. The Rover was my first run in with electic windows and SD1 even had a Cassette player for listening to music! It was smooth, comfy and did more than 50mph. Since then an SD1's been on my list so when the BMW went I stuck a wanted ad on the board, which phil responded to. I got the train from Glasgow to Harrogate to pick it up and it's been awesome ever since. I've not created a thread for it up until now as it's been perfectly behaved. It's never broke down, failed to start and everything works. Infact it drives better than any old car I've ever owned, which is down to Phil's good work when he built it. It's got to the point now where it needs some stuff done to it. There's a large hole in the inner rear wheel arch, part of the boot floor's crusty and there's a few rusty bits at the bottoms of the doors. Recently the gearbox has started to give me some problems because I let the oil ran low and it's been tempramental since. I'm hoping changing the oil will help else it'll need another box at some point. Future plans? Sort the box, do the bodywork and possibly fit some JDM type arches as the wheels just stick out from the wings. The 2600 straight six isn't too bad. It's not fast but it rattles along okay and it handles really well. The natural upgrade is a v8 and manual box but the 2600 is getting rarer and I'm not sure how much quicker it would be. Ideally I'd like to put a BMW m30 straight 6 in it with a manual 5 speed gearbox but I've a feeling that if I take it to bits it'd be about 10 years before it'd be back on the road.

Very nice slead you got, a old guy over the road from me had a 2600 and it sounded nice when going up the hill.

Love it! Especially the Wheels! I used to have one of these myself. It was the 2600 Vanden Plas edition in Silver Leaf and boy was that a comfy car, plus it had one of the coolest dahsboards ever, made you feel like you were at the bridge of the starship enterprise with that bank of instruments in front of you! I really miss my old car (D123 OVP and on SORN according to the DVLA) but there's no denying the bodywork on mine was past its sell by date, it was like swiss cheese! I got rid of it cos I was a student at the time and couldn't afford a welder or to pay someone else to do it. With the welding skill I have now I look back with regret as I probably coulda had that car sorted in a week. One day I'll own another though (or the same one again if I get the chance! )

They do rust alright. Mine is okay other than the odd scab and the aforementioned hole in the wheel arch. The dash is genius. If you look at the pod that has the speedo on it, it slides over to the other side for lhd cars and the vent in the middle of the passenger side is were the lhd steering column goes.

Thats a nice car. I have had 18 of them. The 2600 engine isnt a bad engine, sounds nice and pulls well. Wish I had another but finding them round my way (Leicester) is very rare now.

With me finally getting a place I can work on the car I thought I'd start to the attack the deteriorating bodywork. I'm going to to take it to a couple of shows starting this year, which is something I've never done so I want to get it looking good but not so commited that I don't get it back on the road until all the shows are finished. So this is my new garage. As you can, there's a compatibility issues between the garage and the Rover. However if you do an 143 point turn once in there and have someone to guide you back and forth you can fit in across the way. The door bottoms have started to look a but grotty. When I remove these kick plate you know it's not going to be pretty. I knew this big hole was here, which I had previous fixed using the ultim8 stronger than any weld combination of gaffa tape and cardboard. I didn't however know that, that other hole around the side was there I found the first holes twin on the other side. I told you it wasn't going to be pretty when I took those plates off. There's natty sill cover screwed onto the wheel arch, which is good for looking cool and trapping water so when i started poking at it crumbled like a stale pie. I've cleaned some of the rust up but not started to chop any of it out yet. I've got a bunch of steel sitting that hopefully should be enough to do all the patching although I've not had a good look underneath yet because the thing's so bloody low it's a pain to jack up. There's nothing really unexpected grot wise here but once it's totally in the garage I'm going to take the seats and carpets out to check there's no hidden horrors. BTW. This is the crazy way you jack up an SDI1. There's a bit of box section under the rear bumper that you stick this weird jack in. The problem is is need a hammer to get it in and you really need one to get it back out. I can only image there were hundreds of these driving around in the 80's with the jack permantly stuck into the back of the car.

Nice to see this one getting some love - I had forgotten about it, but do now recall seeing your first post about it.
One of the nice things about the SD1 is that most panels are available - albeit at a price - from Rimmer Bros. I suspect that I've got all this to look forward to when I tear into my Dad's Vitesse.

Lovely car, will follow its progress with interest. Is that Alisa Craig on the horizon in the first picture?

Awesome that you're sorting this out!
With the jacking points, give the internals a good scrape out. Rust and road dirt make the jack difficult to get in. There should be some rubber stoppers in the end to stop this happening!
Theres a little silver lever in one of your pics... stash it somewhere safe as thats the emergency crank for the sunroof!
Regards,
Rich

I'm not overly concerned about that rust, I just hope I don't find much more. The boot looks like it's double skinned, which could be a bit challenging for my limited abilities. Richw82, I'll stick that key on the glove box as with 3 big holes in the boot it's only a matter of time until it leave the car at speed.
Loving the S1's v8Danny are they both v8's?
IanMac, that is indeed ailsa craig. The picture's taken in Troon.

Blimey didn't realise Ailsa was visible from as far as Troon, I've got family in Girvan. Good luck with the restoration.

I drove by this fairly recently actually, in Troon as well.
Any association with Norman and his SD1? (Ayr)
And when you say Phil, is that Phil with the good lady with the mk3 Supra?
Love the Revos!

I live in Troon and tend to use it most weekends so it's always about somewhere. It's not Norman's car but I know Norman from the local SD1 meets. He's got a 2600S in the same colour. He's sticking a 3.9 range rover v8 with LPG in it after the original 2.6 chucked it.

And when you say Phil, is that Phil with the good lady with the mk3 Supra? Love the Revos! Haha, yeah thats my old car, the one i kept talkin to you about at JAE last year! Still looks good...my favorite thing about it was the stance and the wheels...really rare and hard to find now! Hows life without a Supra then...is owning a big yank V8 making up for it?? I knew the old lad was needing some bodywork soon...I didnt realise it was quite that crusty though! Rimmers are havin a sale at the moment, VERY cheap panels. New outer sills are only £40. Might be worth looking at. Good to see him getting some TLC though!

I was out in the driveway last weekend playing with the E28 when you passed by, sounded really mean! Heard it coming from the end of the road.
