I sent the SORN letter away for a car I bought last year but they haven't responded. In fear of copping a fine for not declaring it off the road I was going to send them a letter to ask them what's going on. Is that the best idea? If not, is there some sort of additional form I can fill out?
Cheers

They don't allways send a responce (normaly they don't) so i wouldent worry. I was told by the guy at the DVLA that you have to do it every year tho! I'm not sure if thats true but i guess it wouldent hert to send them another sorn form.

As above, or ring the DVLA, wait 20 mins to get through then get a very friendly young man who'll apologise and promise to send you a letter, which won't arrive either. Second thoughts just do the above...

If the car wasn't taxed in the late nineties (1997/1999 I can never remember which) you shouldn't need to declare a sorn on it.

And to confuse things more, if it was sorned before 2001 (I think?) you don't need to declare it sorn every year, just the once. Think thats right!

cars sorned recently definately need to be resorned every year. i sorn'ed mine online (you just need the reference number from the V5), and got a letter through within the week. whenever I've bought a sorned car it's always had a letter with it, so if you've not had anything i'd check - it's a hefty fine for it getting lost in the post (which obviously will be entirely your fault!)

IMHO it's best to sorn online, since you also get an email confirmation.

Previous Tax Disc or SORN declaration expired on: 01 11 1998
It is an offence to be the registered keeper of a vehicle that is unlicensed and does not have SORN declared.
You can declare SORN from today’s date, however, please note the above offence still applies.
DVLA’s Continuous Registration Enforcement Centre may be in contact with the registered keeper regarding this gap in licensing.
Click the Next button to continue to declare SORN.
Doesn't look good to me!

1. when did you aquire the car?
2. when did you send off the original application?
They CANNOT hound you for any time when it wasn't yours... and if can show that you have tried to do the right thing you should be OK.

Doesn't look good to me! I was in this exact situation once before. I got a fine They tried this on me once before with my Javelin but a very blunt letter to the DVLA got me out of it. I was particularly scathing at the notion of paying a VED related fine on a car that was tax exempt anyway -Ed

I got it last April but matey boy who had it before me didn't send the V5 off until the latter part of 2005. I sent around Christmas time I suppose and then forgot about it, as you do.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

What sort of fine are we talking? I don't know what to do, curse word DVLA. What if the car has already disappeared? I sold it ages ago, officer.

They don't help em selves do they. damned if you do or don't have you any proof you sent it? if not you could send another and say your checking they got the original. Theres a guy who works at my place with his daily 8months out of date, how can that be in this day and age?! that means he's not insured either doesn't it?!

I probably still have the letter somewhere. I think it was £65. I had a lot of other stuff going on when that one arrived so I just paid it and moved on. Also it was my own fault for not declaring sorn when the tax ran out ;D

Doesn't look good to me! I've just tried that with the Volvo and got the same thing. B0llocks. I got the car in January but thought the previous owner had declared it SORN. Obviously he hadn't. Sh!tsticks. Not sure what to do now!

I got the car in 2005, as the V5 states, so surely if it was last taxed in '98 it can't be my fault?
