well, time to insure and tax the kitten which is owned in my name but we have been quoted £270 a year insurance if i go through dad with his no claims insured (a lot less than the £1140 if i go it alone 3rd party) so here are the questions:
can dad be the main driver (policy holder) of a car, which he does not own in his name? and with his son (thats me) as a name driver and owner of the car?
and can you tax a car using a registration document and a cover sheet with different names on (me on the registration - dad on the cover sheet) as its currently insured on his classic policy for him.
sorry if they are dumb questions... i know nothing about this stuff, except cheap insurance = more money for car.

It's dubious.
If the insurance company suspect that you are in fact the main user of the car you will get a BIG FAT NOWT out of them in the event of a claim.
If that claim is when you smash your plastic fantastic into a £70K Porsche you will be really sunk to the nuts in excriment.

If your name is on the insurance document (named driver) you shouldnt have a problem. If its only in your dads name then you might have problems. I've had problems in the past using my traders policy to tax a car because the woman behind the counter had never seen one before. In the end she just said 'Oh well, its got your name on it so it must be ok then.' One of my old employers used to have an open traders policy but i think these are now a thing of the past, but with that i had to register all my cars in his name and he had to tax them for me.
Either way, like Mr Brown says, if you have an acident and the insurance company can find even the slightest excuse not to pay out, they'll use it
Edit; Thinking about it, because its a single car policy you'd be much better of registering it in your dads name.

Not sure about the V5 side of things (ie whose name it has to be in), but you can be a named driver on the policy (rather than the policy holder) & still the main driver, as long as you have declared to the insurers that you are the principle user of the vehicle.
Not sure though if all insurers will do this.

When I had to do all the legal neccessaries ::)to put the other halfs beetle on the road we had it registered in her name but the insurance policy was in my name with her as a named driver . We never had any issues with tax or anything else from doing this ;D

Insurers are cracking down on this. Lok at it this way - its such an obvious way for you to save money (ie pay them less money) they are wise to it. Check the small print. Heard one case where an accident investigator was even asking the neighbours who the main driver of a car was!

Heard one case where an accident investigator was even asking the neighbours who the main driver of a car was! We had this a few months ago - a girl got her Nova stolen and people from the insurance company were knocking on doors asking who drove it and how often because it was insured in her mum's name with her as a named driver. Like Paul H says though, some insurers let you have the policy in your dad's name but have you as the main driver - my sisters done that with her Mini through CIS - I think it was £300 with her as a named driver, £450 in my dad's name with her as the main driver or £1100 in her own name. Don't want to point out anything obvious either, but bear in mind that your dad's NCB only applies to one policy. If he's previously only had the 306 insured then you'll have to start one of the policies from 0 NCB...

Our main car (the doblo) is registered in my name but insured with my wife as main driver. Some insurance companies refused to insure us but others had no problem. As for tax I, do it over the internet and there has never ben a problem.
