Is the Rover 75 (the new one, not the P4) a future retro / classic or not? There's a cream pre-facelift one parked near where I live, and so far it's probably the only (modern-ish) car that my fiancee and I both like!! The discussion has got to the stage that I've even been looking up second hand prices on Autotrader - for one that I'd want (OEW / cream - I hate metallics & with about 60,000 miles or less) the going rate is about 5 or 6K, which is way out of budget. However, in a few years time (please note, this won't be instead of the Amazon!!) this could be what we end up getting as an everyday car, for her, not me! What goes wrong with them, whats the parts back-up like, reliability etc? All I know is that they scored well in the first JD Power surveys that they were eligible for.

It's a honda isn't it?....any old Honda is a classic to some people. but being a name of a defunct english car company it must be a classic.....

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

I think there's very little, if any Honda in the 75, as it was developed under BMW's ownership.

I think thats a good point about it bieng the product of a now defunct British car manufacturer- prices are bound to go up a little quicker than other marques. As for the cars themselves, i cant really be of much use. I've never liked Rovers build quality mind, but if they were built under BMW supervision then they may have improved.

Ive actually owned a 75 and an MGZT 190. The 75 was a 2.0ltr V6 club SE. The interior was, for me, outstanding. Ive never owned or driven a car that was so comfortable and oozed quality. It ended up being upgraded, after a row with the dealer, for the ZT as it developed a problem of pulling to the right and the dealer and in particular Rover were wibblepoo. Ive heard that the diesel versions are going to have big problems with, i think, the ECU boards as there is a big shortage to the point where people think some cars will be stranded. The MGZT was a completely different animal, a fantastic drive, superb performance and handling. If i was going to recommend a 75 i would have to go for the 2.5 ltr V6. The club SE spec is more than adequate ( climate control etc) and you should be able to get a good one at the right price. If you want a great looking car with superb performance i would definately say find a ZT 190, infact i would get one over the 75. Just my opinion.

My dad had one as a company car - a diesel predictably enough. It sounded bloody horrible, and got worse with more miles, but he loved it.
Interior was nice tho, but used to make some creaky noises from time to time tho.

The 1.8 ltr was certainly renowned for being troublesome, the majority of Freelanders were sold with this lump and many owners had an awful lot of reliability problems. Yes the headgasket was a weak point. I would avoid the 1.8 75, its just too small an engine for the size of car, the turbo'd 1.8 in the ZT is much better but with the V6 its a bit pointless.

I've driven quite a few of these - the MG ones are really nice and quick. The V8s are a Ford 302 lump no? Very nice too, but I only got to drive the 8-pot a short distance. Good cars - weren't they voted car of the year when they were launched? And certainly a different breed to the ancient 25 and 45s. I think they'll be classed as classics long before the equivalent Mondeo / Omega just because of their rarity (A good Rover? That is rare! ;D)

Well, my dad was the engineering project manager for the rover 75 and he has had 5 or 6. Personally I think that they are great ive been all over the country in one normally with a very large caravan on the back. the v8's are very good but they only ever produced the lower powered one which was about 265 or 285 ps (I cant remember). The plans were to make a 385ps model there were loads of prototypes and there was even a 500ps model which would do about 200mph. I was very privileged to have been in most of them for a little ride round the lanes. They didn’t make the high power ones because they had problems cooling the oil in the diff and making in quiet enough in the cabin.
Definite classic!!

I love 'em!!! One of very very few modern cars which I can get excited about. The V8 is a cast-iron modern classic, I would LOVE one of those.
I love the MG ZS180 as well, (not the rest of the ZS/Rover 45 range though, they are turd).

The old man has one. 2.0 V6 - smooth as whipped cream and very comfy.
Little bits of trim are falling off, but overall its a good car. He doesnt exactly give it an easy time either.
The top of the line models will deffo be a future classic.
