Yeah it was as good a condition as you will get... Of course it feels slower (given the ratio's) but it isnt going to spit the diff and dangerously lock the rear wheels like your last one. Its a race box with proven performance. Bit of possitive feedback please...I think it's the perfect solution for the BTR - A 944 turbo box would just be plain boring!

Its been used every day since, i thought i was going to remove it at first. I often selected reverse instead of first to begin with.. But now I'm fully used to it - the change and the gate and i now like it a lot. I have never given the car beans off the line before and i think even though it sounds/revs slower it is actualy a bit quicker as it has longer 2nd & 3rd.
So Mark and Dave - you were right, it just took some getting used to.

This is the best looking 944 ever. Well put together too, great thread. I wonder if one of these would fit in the garage if I sold the escort. Anyne know the width and length?

4230mm x 1735mm or therabouts.
Glad it worked out Gav'. I kinda think it suits the whole ethos of the build too.

I just drove to Poland again. When I fitted the 931 beam a couple of weeks ago, it was a tad lower than I intended. With a full tank, loaded with a passenger it was simply too low for Polish roads. I broke the rear exhaust hanger grounding out and lost the p/steering belt. So I have just re indexed the torsion bars on a farm in the hot sun. What a job! Luckily everything was free as it was only just fitted. Its now level when loaded and I should be able to adjust the excentrics when home to sit nice when empty. The satnav indicated 154mph on the autobahn, it had a bit more to give but I'm not that cruel. That is fast for a full laden 27 year old car built in a shed imo. Now who do I speak to about stone chips? Spoiler looks shot gunned.
No speed limit on German motorway, still braked when I saw Police car = fail. Instinct eh?

I can't speak for Gav but all 944 models were designed for Autobahn top speed cruising. A well set up one will feel safe and stable at 150+ Even the slow base model will feel slow at the 100 mark. They are great GT cars.

'Tis true. My old S2 felt more stable at three figure speeds than at 70! They are wonderful cruisers. Forgive me for asking Gav, but (not that it matters) how much did it set you back in fuel? I'm considering taking of the cars (205 or Porker) on the Brands to 'Ring run this year, and trying to see what is viable etc . You can PM me if you wish. If I didn't say before, it was a great read regarding your motor . It looked fabulous in that.

I got a copy of Retro Cars sent out to me this month purely for the feature on your 944, it arrived yesterday and I read it straight away! Well done on getting the feature it was very well deserved. What does the future hold for the 944?

Thanks chaps.
Its passed its MOT, i need to do a few engine jobs and then something erm.. major. Its not floating my boat anymore, especialy the tired front end. I would like to go a different colour but its too costly to do it properly, black is just a nighmare, its always dirty and hard work to clean. I want to lose the 944 look and fit 968 bodywork. Its got quite tatty now and the front looks too old fashioned This involves cutting the rear panel and removing all the front boltons. I just need to collect more panels. I'm not sure if the Azevs will suit this, I think 18" is more fitting with the 968.

If your gonna go to the expense of making your 944 look like a 968, you might as well make it look like a 968 RS.

Yeh, that's sort of what I was thinking. It will sort of be an RS, given it has a Turbo ect..

I've found the same with my Mercs - they are incredibly comfortable to drive at high speed - of course you pay for it at the petrol station.

Shame you're swapping the front end, 968 front looks very goofy compared to the 944 IMO, but more power to you! Cracking car in any case.

From reading this and your thoughts on tipec about the 1.8t engine you seem to be getting disillusioned with it? What are your thoughts on the 944 turbo engine? - too expensive to modify or unreliable? I think the 1.8 t engine is perfect for the 924 but I dunno, it seems like the 944 needs something bigger with a bit of torque.

My thoughts on the 944 and turbo engine are - they are not good engines, most suffer from Bore wear, I have never had one apart that didn't. Oil consumption seems present on most cars. The worst thing is the price of the engine and parts. This would be OK if the engine was a super power house but its not. For the cash to get serious power you may as well do an engine conversion . Compared to the engines of choice (Audi i5 turbo and 1.8 20vt) the pork lump does not compete at all aside from the fact it fits. The 1.8 20vt engine can produce lot more power at little cost, its cheap to maintain and replace. The I5 is better as it doesn't have stupid Alusil bores and makes a nice song.
The 968 body swap. I need to tidy the bodywork, and I hate pop up lights. I have been looking at the car in the same guise for 2 years and feel a change. Swings and roundabouts as it will look better from some angles and worse from others. It wont look so dated though.
