A bad late night ebay purchase, I should run but I have decided to tidy it up and rectify its problems.. The seller was a ***t and a liar and it clearly had a dodgy MOT. The calipers were seized, so on the 2 hour journey home the brakes overheated and failed, and I had to sort the calipers on the road resulting in a sunburned ar5e and lots of swearing .. During this joyfull event it also fell off the jack - further damaging the rusty filled sills. To do list - Ripped seats, split steering wheel, leaking fuel tank, ripped headliner, cracked dash, knackerd wheel bearing, knackerd gearbox and lots more.. Looks ok? look again, the pics flatter it (they did on ebay too) I think that poor alighnment is due to an s2 nose with s1 light lids and bumper.

I only bought this 944 due to its lovely wheels, but the first problem I wanted to sort was wheel vibration and it turned out to be the wheels having flat spots rather than balance. I found these on ebay, OZ split rims...no tyres and in need of love but no kerbing and have never been apart. Rear 10 x 17 fronts 8.5 x 17.

As I said they needed a bit of love, the faces were fine but the rims were corroded and peeling. The rims were wet flatted using 240,400,800 then 1200 and finished with some brasso. I didnt want to strip the wheels and risk later rim leaks as the seal looked so good. Finised rims - This is a budget build so I went for used tryes, rear are 255 40 17 (a little stretched) fronts I may change, 205 40 17 (a massive stretch).

A trial fit to the car and the offset is wrong! way too far in. I wanted them to sit "in" as I plan to drop it but not this far! They were on a later porsche and my early car is a different offset. (the rim in this pic is not finished yet) img242.imageshack.us/img242/9849/retrowheels025.jpg [/img] So, as you can see I need spacers, I found a second hand set on ebay. (I am aware this is an ebay build thread..) 2x 35mm and 2x 42mm hubcentric spacers.

This is causing a lot of issues cosidering I bought porsche wheels for a porsche..and porsche spacers for a porsche... The spacers don't go on the front as the centre hole is too small to go over the hubs. Also the caps don't fit on with the locking nuts fitted.
Going out now to modify the hubs..

Are they M12 x 1.5? McGard do some locking nuts that aren't the "cap" type they have a hole all the way through so they don't protude past the stud. I'll get the model number off mine tomorrow they're all I could fit under my BBS caps.

What are the original lattice wheels - Fondmetals? They look like a wheel that was fitted to quite a few Jags in the 80's and early '90s. I could be mistaken though. They're nice; its a real shame they're not round. Its a nice car, I like the 944 in black.

Looks like a nice project, I really like the 924/944. Sure people bang on about them not being proper Porsche's, but I've never really seen the issue. Yours is gonna rock on those wheels as well methinks! Now get some more pics up Oh, and what's the sketch with the 911 in your banner?

The old wheels are fondmetals, rare rims in staggerd 16". A rip off BBS mahle. The 911 is my old project, now sold. The 944 "not real porsche" thing is just balls. What people mean is the engine is in the front, and its slow. Many old mags state it as the best handleing car of its time, for some reason the 968 and turbo seem to be accepted as a porsche when they are the same car. If they had all left the factory with 250bhp would people say it? This is all going a bit slowly as I would rather stay in the warm and work on my bike.

Looks really good! I bet your pleased with it.
How did you go about lowering? I did the cheap chop and bolt moving to get mine down a bit.

Yes I'm pleased, thinking to swap the 45mm spacers to the rear and the 35 to the front to perfect it...not sure yet.. would like a little more girth on the rears. The suspension...on the rear i swapped the adjustment bolt for somthing smaller, and the front is left over from my old 944 and was another used ebay item, I'm sure they are also chopped but they did pass an MOT.

I've been hankering after one of these for the last few months as a daily and yours is not helping! Looks super smart on those wheels man! How is it on fuel? Are they hard to run?

MPG good, mid 30s. Running costs are same as any old German motor, if you use ebay and GSF its cheaper than most modern cars.

Porsche 924 - gone Citroen Saxo VTR - not very retro but I loved it - now gone... MK4 Golf GTi 1.8T - gone but hardly remembered... Mini Cooper S R53 - gone BMW 125d Coupe - gone (mostly sideways)
Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

Fuel is ok, good for a 2.5. Running costs are same as any german motor, if you use ebay and ecp its cheaper than most modern cars. Thanks for that, I'll be keeping an eye on yours anyway - it looks great on those wheels
