You better believe it.... This punch bag was on its way to the tip, includes gloves and inside the bag it was delivered in. No idea of value, but had to be worth more than 50p. My manager had recently mentioned he was going to start boxing as a form of exercise.... Perfect find then.

my most recent freecycle finds are a Double Jay-Be fold away bed and a York Weights bench with leg and arm attachments.....its a lovely feeling isnt it Great feeling it is alright. Thing is it always releases funds for other stuff. During bootfair time we bought 2 French made wigs, one for £3.00 and one for £10.00 knowing they are worth £150.00 each in the shops or off Ebay. So £13.00 for £300.00's worth of wigs..... bargain in my eyes. Nicola's 19 year old daughter lost all her long blonde princess hair at age 15 and shaves her head now, but wears the wigs as she works with the public..... Here are more such feelgood items. Older B&D drills, the most powerfull one is only 400w but they are perfect as a spare or to use for a Spit BBQ along with some bearing and chain from an old bicycle. Plans stolen unashamedly from Lewist123456789. Health & Safety FTW !!

PS: Tip and bootfair metal files have become turning chisels for the lathe. And they work beautifully. Keeping a keen edge. Even the whetstone is a tip find ;D Made these with the new chisels from some worktop laminated oak offcut. Yep.... life is great, living from freebies.

Didn't get these from the tip as it would be easier to get something out of Strangewways than our local "recycling" facility ........So these were from the local Freeads; 26 good sized rocks, planning to put a rockery on the gravelly cack that they're currently sitting on. Got to build some sort of retaining wall along the hedge, planning to leave a bit of a gap as I've drawn out some plans to build some Hedgehog hides to have between said rockery & hedgerow. Took a few trips in the Honda to pick them up, they average 15" each. I haven't priced up how much stone will cost as this job will be next year (still got gates & a fence to put up but the GN 'absorbed' the budget for that this month.

I was running about a bit for work today, starting in Slough, then down to Basingstoke and then up to Farnham, just over 200 miles for the day. I also had my manager with me, and he knows the way my head works now, as I did the resto of the pedal cart for his son. So on our way out after seeing the last client, we passed a works department where about 30 plus of these lamps below were all piled into some containers, marked for the recycling skip. I looked at the boss, he laughed and said "Go on" so I went in, found a secretary who went to find the big boss and asked what the chance was of me having one..... this is to mount over the lathe for when I am doing turning that goes deep or needs a fine tuned eye on the work surface. She came back and said that he had said I should help myself to whatever I wanted in exchange for a few quid into the local charity box. WINNER !!!! Here they are, essentially Freebies, or tip treasures. One for the lathe, one for the bandsaw and drill press and one for the work top, and the 4th one for the garage worktop. I wonder what they would have cost me in the open market?

Some excellent finds I don't do too bad out of work and friends donating broken electricals and computers. I have boxes and boxes of electronics components and computer parts, and occasionally, I even use some of them! Keep on wombling. Thanks Mate. I made a silly offer on this Tormek sharpening tool. It is 80's vintage, so perfect fo me. I would love a brand new setup, but if you check out the prices , even used ones make £300 and more at times. So, along with one of the drills previously offered above, it will make a perfect tool for the woodwork chisels, alowing you to sharpen at the right angles and also more smoothly than a grinder and whetstone. Drill gets attached to side and drives a small diameter rod in chuck, which in turn activates the rubber drive wheel, all acts as a massive combined flywheel, allowing the grinding wheel to do its job. Collection in Oxford on Monday.

Met up with the seller of the Tormek early this morning as McDonalds in Oxford, as I had a hectic day planned, with a handover from a colleague etc for 2012. Still, a quick coffee, and chat about using the grinder effectively, led to him telling me the new 2011 Tormek he had bought cost him £675, so I am very pleased with my simple 80's technology. Pic just shows it mocked up with a drill. Still needs propper fitting etc. This should keep the wood turning chisels maximally keen at all times.

Got the runs and headache, sore body and nausea the last few days.... decided after a bollocking from Nicola, not to go to work today, being the last day before Christmas. Instead, a quick update on a couple of bits, both actually roadside skip finds. Polisher, made, I presume from an old grinder, unless someone can tell me differently. I think it could help polish wood to a stupidly shiny smooth finish, or anything else like ally that needs polishing. The second item is an old guitar, had it as a decoration piece before, bought strings years ago, never fitted them, lost them in the mean time (packed away somewhere) Nicola reminded me that it was stashed in the garage rafters and would make a perfect donor for the Cigar Box Guitar build. I plan to use the set of tuning screws. Not sure if I want to go with traditional 3 string, or do the 4 string, which is said to be a better instrument. After all, its a "Blues" instrument, so basic may be the way to go. Especially if you look at what people do make and play.

Had to go to the Post Office a few minutes ago to get a motorbike spares parcel out to South Africa urgently. Stopped in the carpark and found this plate there against the fence in the weeds, It had been driven over and there was a bunch of oil on it too, thought it would add to Micky next doors pile of brass that he sells on. However, when I picked it up, I noted the picture on it. I will start a thread in a moment, more a show us what weird stuff you collect, than thread really. Nicola has been collecting old smoking pipes of various vintages for some time now, since we went for a walk on the Medway riverside one low tide. Note her grubby paws tightly holding all the bits of clay pipe in a small bag that we had found in an hour of walking the shore. Keep in mind, the Medway had a load of wooden hulled Prison Ships years ago, and many of these clay pipes were disposable "penny pipes" Brass plate as found. Straightened out, polished and now wrapped up for Christmas.... ;D

My family are all like this, we seem to have a knack of acquiring unwanted things from neighbours/skips! My highlights have to be- A full working yamaha stereo stack with bose music monitor speakers and all the cables, the amp has since been thrown as it seemed to have an overheating problem but I still used the CD player and speakers with my mums old amp 1988 vw polo, been sitting in a local garden for a few years covered in moss, left a note on the window seeing if they were interested in buying it (was looking for a restoration project at the time and already owned a 92 polo) then months later got a call from a Malaysian women saying it was her fathers old car, and they had moved back to Malaysia, the keys and documents were in the glovebox if I wanted them! So I turned up the next day with my dad and his Defender, just as the owner of the house turned up, verified the story and said that if we had not turned up he was calling the scrap men that day! we towed it home and I cleaned it up and got the engine running over a couple of months, it looked a good car but unfortunately as I jacked it up the jack went through a rusty seal, this was in April and I started uni this year, I didn't have the time or the money for a full on project car tried selling the thing but nobody wanted it in the end I had to scrap it, but I broke it for parts first, helping to keep other cars on the road Also a month before I got the polo i got a 1974 Honda PC50 moped out of my neighbours skip, it had been sitting at the end of his garden for 30 years, so I've stripped it down and am in the process of restoring it, lovely feeling knowing you've saved a historic vehicle from the crusher! Also had a Tom Tom satnav that work was throwing out due to 'battery not holding its charge' and they had lost the mains lead, I charged it using my brothers PS3 controller cable for 24hrs, and it works just fine, although normally I have to keep it plugged in whilst in the car Also when our neighbour died a few years ago, his son was knocking the garage down as he was refurbishing the house. His father was a tool maker years ago and amongst the stuff being thrown away was an immaculate 1930s lathe which my dad saved and is now cleaned up and in use in our workshop we also saved a load of old tools from the skip too. Its ashame that I was too young to save the Mk2 vauxhall astra or the old 70s Audi parts from the garage that were scrapped

Some good scores there rk92, I have yet to score a small car,
Nicola and I went to meet some friends in Bromley yesterday and I had a load that had to go to the tip I normaly sneak stuff from, but on the way she made me stop in at our other "loacl" tip, which is the same distance away, and it had video surveilance and HiViz guys everywhere...... That said, I still sneaked a low energy bulb into the car to use as the bridge on my planned electric Diddley Bow build.
Part of the whole thing is just keeping your eyes open all the time.

Gonna try the other site on monday. You scooped some real good bargains there. I wish some of our local councils would look at it like that. My "Secret" tip that Skinnylew on here knows about encourages people to re0use, re-purpose and recycle and actually have board up at the gates to show how much stuff they recycle every month, and it is tons that get taken out to be re-used again. Nicola and I were walking last night and went int a speciality wine shop to look for a decent wooden wine box to use as a basis for an amp that I want to build once I get that bit figured out. THREAD: www.retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=othrmod&action=display&thread=118879He had no wine box, but gave me these two cigar boxes for FREE, suggesting I make a Banjo from the smaller one, which is about 7" x 7" x1.5" It seems quite small, but would be cool if I can make it all work. As mentioned before, I think people just need to look at "used" items differently, and will soon discover how much money they have left over for other things, and how much fun it is to make stuff yourself, even if you jst give it a try.... nice thing is, it cost nothing for a start, and if you screw it up, you learned something and have not wasted money... getting it right on the other hand makes you go out and do something more outrageous the next time. Right, what should I build/make next ?

Amazing what people throw away, however I have to admit that some stuff really is rubbish. A mates father in law died a few years ago, but no one actually had the balls to remove or clear out the garage, untill a burglary took care of that..... What was left was few bits, like old power drills and some hand tools. The power drills are packed away for future use. However today I thought I would post a pic of some of the hand tools the thieves did not take..... mostly probably only good for weighing in, but I see old tools as somewhat of a reminder of when a tool would last a lifetime. There are a few nice bits I love in this lot, like the old soldering iron, who learned to solder with them, or still uses one? Then the shifting spanners. And lastly, warranting a pic of its own...... The bent beaked pliers, who can tell me more about them and the funny little tool that looks a bit like a boot on the right hand side of the group. These pliers do it for me, never seen a pair of them. Wise guys, tell me more, where were they used ??
