brilliant recycling as always Rian Thanks Lew, Mint Sauce, what gets me is the wasteage, and remember the guy who is having the job done has PAID for those materials being skipped. Yesterday I picked up a plastic wheelbarrow...... (looks like it was used once to mix a bit of render or concrete in) perfect for when I start building my Brick built BBQ, which will be made from recycled and used/Free bricks. My other wheelbarrow which was free too, came with a couple of dents, rust and a hole in the bottom made by something that pierced it. Barrow looks like this..... and is about £65 on the web.

This is it, it is a massive waste. I used to get really annoyed at all the waste on site. Now I just get annoyed. If I had space myself Id bring loads home and freecycle it, but sadly Id be crucified if I tried

I have to be really restrained and not bring back anything as I know i would be sooooo cluttered otherwise. However I'm definately going to have to have a better look around the dump when i leave the office in future (my office over looks the dump, and i work for the council )

Yesterday there was a nice tablesaw that seemed to have had very little use, but the cord had been cut already, and I have one, so I just walked away. Still hope to get a decent bike sometime.

This: $50 Aussie dollars. 1996 model, handbuilt USA frame. In the pic I have replaced the wheelset with a higher spec one, and added a seat and computer as it had neither, otherwise is as purchased (albeit cleaned!).

Well, out of other peoples pain, I got to gain................ One of my long term (14 years) friends and his wife and 3yo son are mnoving back to South Africa after 10 years in the UK. They are spending the weekend with us, or as long as they need, as their house sale completed on Friday, and they are now homeless till the 11th November. When they got here today, Steven brought me his wife Lyzettes TREK 7400 Hybrid, it needs servicing, but has had little use. I always used to ride TREK in SA when I used to ride, and now have a Bitsa that I got the base for from Kerry "Disasterbus" Once this bike is sorted and serviced, I will make a serious effort to ride the way I used to. FREE.... !!!

Todays find was an easy, and simple one. I have been looking for a bike for Tom to ride out here, as he usually grabs mine, leaving me with Nicola's pink one, which is not really an issue to a guy of my age. Specialised Four-Fifteen BMX bike, in remarkably good condition. Front tyre and tube knackered, already ordered a replacement from Ebay, £12.00 delivered. Everything else on it tight, and un-abused. Headstock bearings all good, pedals etc good, brakes sharp as, and chain needing a bit of tensioning. Seat has a few scars from careless ownership. Looking at Ebay, £100 start prices, and it seems new they were between US$650 and $850 , so not a bad find. Will raise the seat a bit, and probably ride it myself, also deffo taking it in the teardrop trailer. Sorry for late afternoon crapy quality photo.

Damn, I've got a pair of BMX tyres you could have stuck straight on if you were ok with giving them back to me at some point. Probably would have cost you more in petrol than the Ebay ones I guess.

You live in such a nice city for bikes too. Lovely mountains to explore (or struggle up) and some beautiful scenery all around. I really liked Hobart.

quality BMX find there must try and get another BMX soon ..... Well, been "Redundant" for 2 weeks now, and must say, I am having withdrawal symptoms from not going to the tip at least once a week. In the mean time, I have bought a Stihl MS260 Chainsaw to cut up the wood I get for FREE from a local tree surgeon, and any other timber I happen to find along the way. I also bought all the safety kit to go with the chainsaw, as it is pretty useless if you only have one arm or leg to opperate it with. Probably not the cheapest way to get firewood, but it keeps me busy, and along with the axes I already had, and the big one I bought, it could set me up to be able to work for a landscaper, or on my own. The fun part of the job..... splitting wood. Packed up to dry behind the garage. Still need to get the piece of truck curtain side down here from Rottie007 to cover the wood over. Remember the Specialized BMX I got a couple of weeks ago? Got a new wheel and tyre off Ebay for it, and also cleaned it up. The bike seems to be hardly used. Oh, and it is a bloody nice ride, even for someone my size and build.

Been working at home, breaking through between two rooms the last week, and had to take the plasterboard, laminate and carpeting that came out , off to the "new tip" that is closest to where we live now, this week........ Flippin 'Eck !!! They have CCTV on all the bins, and NPR cameras at the entrance and gate, to check you do not come in too often. I suspect I wont be getting much there, though I did nick one brick (honestly) which will go toward my BBQ build in the new year. Yesterday I also dismantled a knackered 15kg Calor bottle which will be cut and hinged to be built into the side wall of the BBQ, above to the Pizza oven part of whole thing, like Maxlee's burner, to be used as a oven for baking bread and keeping BBQ meat warm. Cant wait to start that one. Hope to get it like this.

Been a while, and not working, and having a company car to go to my old favourite council tip, meant not getting much stuff lately. No pics, but I have managed to collect about 120 bricks, 24 regular concrete breeze blocks, 4 large ones, a load of timber and pallets. 16 railway sleepers. The bricks and some of the timber will be used to build a rather large outside BBQ along with more bricks I hope to get from another neighbour who apparently has had them stacked on the side of his property for years, if not, I will buy some. I have also liberated about 35 full wheelbarrow loads of good soil from 2 neighbours and a load of garden rocks from one neighbour. The soil, sleepers and rocks were used along with another 5 tons of bought in topsoil and farm manure (you would be surprised how the stuff disappears) to top up part of the garden and to fill the railway sleeper beds I built. There is also a double cascade waterfeature built out of skip and scrap finds.... the only bit I paid for @ £10.00 was a 2 exit waterproof plug, even the 15 meters of heavy duty cable was found on the sidewalk after a neighbour completed a job. On Friday my one neighbour who loves to find stuff as much as me, brought me a rather large Makita mitre saw. He had done a cool clearance of electrical tools from a charity shop warehouse (they do not sell electricals on) in the lot was 110v industrial tools, including a hardly used Bosch jigsaw, a Mitre saw, 2 bandsaws, 3 orbital sanders and a load of other stuff incl spotlights, lightbars, car jumper packs, some of it unused in original packaging...... makes you wonder about people. Anyway, so my greatest and about to be used tip find has to be this chop saw, as I am going to build the frames and doors for the storage spaces that go below the BBQ . Some of the timber and pallets used to build a few practice obstacles for my trials bike. In use..... Sometimes resulting in some of this (Though not too often ;D ) This was the kick starter biting back. Railway sleeper beds, water feature and some of the obstacles laid out where I use them to practice (Not allowed on" Nicola's grass" ) There are loads of other things that come home with me whenever I go out and get fixed or used, but I forget about a lot of them. Will try to post updates as I gather stuff.

haha , that looks fun, Bet the neighbours love it ;D And I think nicola is right.... Your garden looks wayyyyy to nice to be riding all over We are lucky, the neighbours are very tolerant, as are we. Garden does look good at the moment. This is what it looked like a year ago before we moved in, in September. The deck was very "dead" and the water feature bed was just a hole in the lawn where the grass was unsuccessfully trying to grow. Quite a lot of work inside and out has gone on, as I have loads of time. At some point I will do a small post thread here of "What I did while unemployed" I can say I worked prety muchevery day, maybe more than at the old job BEFORE : AFTER :

my involvement with a local charity which recycles push bikes means, i visit 3 local tips at least twice a week. collecting bikes which have been thrown away. at times i am totally stunned at what some people throw away, in the past 2 weeks we have had 3 BRAND NEW!!!!!! bikes in and today a "land rover" mtb, fairly tidy but with a wheel missing but my personal "aquisition" is a 1/2 size boc argoshield bottle to go with the two pub bottles i gained 3 days ago plus there is another full size argoshield waiting for my next visit ttfn glenn

I was so in withdrawal yesterday that I collected a load of old bits of very rusty steel that I dug out in the garden into a bag and took it in. I need some 2mm sheet steel for the BBQ project, an old wooden handled garden fork, which I will make longer with an old pick axe handle for better leverage. then I was also looking for some old garden hand tools to turn into handles for Nicola's potting shed. lastly, I want to get some old cast iron grill plates from a scrapped BBQ, and a chrome grilling shelf from a cooker. All I got was a metal tray full of good and long HSS drillbits, a magnifying glass, and a small plastic measuring jug for 2 stroke oil. Large hand in pic to give perspective of drill sizes. Got to be worth a few ££'s

WOW !! Last update was 5th May. I have a slightly odd update today, as it is all Tip-bound treasures which I will explain. Weird how the world works. Mickey my neighbour is 66 and still works like a Trojan with his white van, moving pretty much anything from Paintings into Sotheby's to building site rubble, to office clearances and house moves (He moved Nicola and my 2 houses when we moved here last year. A few weeks ago, Tom, Nicola's son in typical teenager style managed to break his office chair in a particularly Violent X-Box Black Ops mission..... yeah, you heard me. So of course Nicola said the boy needs a new chair which usually costs money. The next day Mickey asked if I would mind just giving him a hand on the Saturday with an office move (no money involved, as we help each other out regularly, and work together well) To me it was a chance to get out the house for a while, as I am mostly stuck here. Into London we went, and the "move" became a clearance. Loads of new unused electronic stuff like computer mouses, headsets for PC/Telephones , books and a massive Oak office desk, some oak 3 drawer filing units and a very smart, multi adjustable office chair..... BINGO !!! Mickey said I could have the chair and any electronic stuff I wanted, so I took the chair for myself, and a couple of the HP mouses, as well as another headset for Mr X-Box Black Ops Killer. Mickey sold the table and filing units for £125 at the pub to someone and tipped all the financial reports into recycling the next week, and clearly got paid whatever he gets paid for a clearance job. Ohhh, and the guy gave us each a tenner for breakfast as we were there at 8am, and he only got there at 9.30 to open for us, which was his fault. So basically although I do not get paid for the job, I saved a chair and a bunch of electrical stuff from the skip, and depending on where you look, the chair (or a similar one, even the backrest on this one has a car tyre inflation valve to adjust its shape and comfort) will cost around £200 plus...... Link here: www.chairoffice.co.uk/prod/759/cairo-plus.aspxNot bad for a skip rescue. My chair in the office, as Tom now has my less valuable IKEA special to kill the world from. Last week I took away the tiles and rubble from the kitchen refurb and was able to pick a few bits, with the approval of the tip guy. I told him I was looking for an old heavy duty enamel roasting dish from an old cooker, so he said "go ahead, take a look for yourself" I found one, that is absolutely the exact size to fit below the BBQ between the legs, from the front to the rear. Emboldened by his generosity I asked if I could have a quick scratch about in the metal recycling bin too..... of course he said yes. So I found a stainless steel cooking pot, which will become a rain cover to fit on top of the chimney, to stop rain from killing the coals when it pours down. I also found a medium pair of decent tin snips, a bunch of old steel files (these make the best wood turning chissels when sharpened, a trick I learned from my dad years ago, when we used to buy all the files in pawn shops for about 10p each.)There was also a Ball Pein hammer with broken handle, some hinges for the fire place cupboard doors, and some old hinges and locks with keys in an old OXO tin. While I was there, I "swopped" my old galvanised bucket with rotten bottom for a very good condition one, these do the same job as a black plastic builders bucket, but with more style. Lastly, today's score. Once again, headed for the tip, as a young dog/puppy had chewed at some of the bottom supports of the chairs in frustration when locked indoors for a day. Nicola has been and even bid on a few Ebay extendable tables and always lost, as prices seem to go silly often. Todays table is solid pine, with 6 chairs, and can extend to accomodate 8 people at a push for dinner....... Nicola will take a scourer and soap and water to the whole lot, to clean and also key the wood, then I will take some satin finish varnish and give the lot a couple of coats, which should see it come up looking decent. For today that is the lot. Thanks to Mickey for helping with his Sprinter van to fetch the table and chairs about 3 miles from here..... this is why it pays to help people without expecting anything in return.
