I'm fed up of the golf. its expensive to insure, I'm (dare i say it?) getting bored of the way it looks and it refusing to move the last few feet into the car space at work was possibly the final straw.
I'm thinking maybe a beetle. what are they like to insure? how much for a semi decent one with as little rust as possible? I'm not looking for a certain model or anything, any beetle will do. anything in particular to look for? someone told me that the floor behind the drivers seat tends to rust which seems about right with the buggy.

also what are they like for reliability? only really 2 ten minute drives a day to work and 2 half hour journeys at the weekend really.

how reliable dubs are is down to how theyve been looked after. if theyve been regularly serviced they will go on for years.if theyve been abused they'll nick ya wallet and run off. prices for a decent not too rusty bug these days starts at around 2k, unless your prepared to do some work.in which case you'll be able to pick up a sh1tter for less. check the heater channels, these are a pain on the ar$e to do, and expensive if you pay.they often rust round the battery tray under the back seat. major place to look for rust on a bug is the framehorn, where the beam meets the chassis.if its excesive then its probably dead. theres probably more places they rust, i just cant remember now. ;D

Rusty heater channels as the man says! Personally, I wouldn't have a Bug for everyday use, weekend classic/toy etc yes, everyday no. You might say that's not a good view, and I love old cars as much as any retro fan but I draw the line at an aircooled Bug for going to work, shops, out and about as a reliable vehicle. When my Golf was off the road for something or other I borrowed my brother's Bug for work for a week and the novelty soon wore off. No heat, no demisting, they steam/ice up inside and out, slow, noisy, uncomfortable, no room in them... everything you want in a weekend retro car but not a daily driver! Just my opinion, I know everyone will say I'm a pansy and of course you can use them everyday, loads of people do but for me they are just that bit too unpractical to bother with and I was brought up on aircooled dubs!

yeah ill have to admit, the more i think about a beetle as a daily driver the more i worry about it. might just get the golf fixed and make do with it. although if it goes the same as last time ill send it to the garage, it .will run fine with him and then ill get it back and be stuck with a knackered car. great...

well today (and a few times over the past few days) it started slowing down a bit with the throttle not really doing anything. when i slow it right down (first gear parking etc) it just refuses to move and cuts out, with or without the clutch down. it will restart when its been left for a minute or 2. starts fine every time from cold, no problems. just konks out about 5-10 minutes into a journey once in a while.
it did it a while ago but i stopped putting my foot to the floor and it stopped doing it (young and foolish driver ;D ). now it does it however i drive it
I'm hoping a good service will help it a bit

What about a Mini, or an Imp. I quite fancy trying a Beetle one day, an old skool cal looker. And I must own an Imp one day too.

if its the standard carb, id blame that. some info ive absorbed from this site. put a weber on, apparently they improve matters no end. if its a weber already, i dunno. ;D

it the stadard carb as far as I'm aware. last time it did this i took it to a garage and they cleaned it. didnt help at all. might try changing it anyway. worth a try i spose.
just in the bath and i thought about a mini (no jokes please). seems a bit impractical though since me and a mate often go shopping in my golf and bring back copious amounts of curse word. although a mini or imp does tempt me somewhat...

Imps with a few modern mods' can make good daily drivers. But for the love of god don't get involved in Club politics for fear of wanting to chew your own plumbs off!!!

Mmmm Corrado sounds god good. I'd try and knock him down a bit though. The good thing about the 'Rado is that it's got all those nice familiar features the Golf has, but a bit sportier.
