Ok Guys ...
With winter approaching worryingly fast ive been thinking for the past few months about doing something the weekend the clocks move ... to cling onto every last hour of British Summertime that we can!
A few things have inspired me recently, and i have a few options worked out as to how things could work. I just need to know now what you guys think, and of course if you want to get involved!
The Retro Rides Rendezvous Rally will be a navigation style rally, with points given for distance travelled/places visted/time kept (depending on format). It will be 2 people per car, and sat nav will be forbidden.
Here i have three scenarios for you as to how it could work.
1) Meet at common location. After briefing, and calculation of common factors to bring everyones odometers into line with each other, the event begins. The challenge is to visit as many places of auto interest/cover as many miles as possible in a certain timeframe before returning back to the start point. You will have a 15 minute rendezvous window to arrive. 2am will be the cut off (when the clocks move) and after then will count as dnf.
2) Meet at common location. The challenge here is to follow a predetermined route, hitting certain places of auto interest at set times, and arrive at the rendezvous point again within a 15 minute window before 2am. Photographic/receipt will be required as proof of places visited.
3) Same as 2) but you finish at the same location as the start point. ie, you don't end up miles away from where you started.
So .... a) Does it appeal? Whos up for it? b) which scenario would you prefer to take part in? c) how long would you like it to last, 4 hours (10pm-2am) 6 hours (8pm-2am) 13 hours (8pm-8am)
There will be an entrance fee, likely to be £20-£30 per car.
There will be prizes for the winning team. Good prizes too!
I have most locations and scoring system sorted (I'm keeping that under my hat for the second), but i look forward to seeing peoples replies and opinions to the above.

That's an excellent idea! Dunno whether I'll be able to enter, but I will if I can! (Usual car / time / money factors...)

depends where in the country? well thats why i've stuck this thread up to see what people would like to do. I have a list of places/venues which could act either as base or a start or finish point. I think somewhere fairly central makes sense - at least to start from - but if people have preferred bias to location i would like to hear. Thanks for the feedback so far guys!

Sounds like great fun and if I can get it past SWMBO, I will either pilot or co-pilot for definite! As to location, I am not fussed as long as I can scrape together the cash for the fuel I think that 8 hours or so would be a good length as I think that 13 hours through the night would be pushing it - even with a driver change (which brings insurance issues into it as well!). You're probably best NOT to time it, as it then falls into the realms of 'pacemaking, speed trials' etc and will invalidate most people's insurance.
Back when I was more involved with the organisational side of club motorsport we used to run a monthly Navigational series during the summer months. You were given an A4 sheet with somewhere between 20 or 30 six-figure OS Map references on it, with a question to be answered about something at each one. After 30 minutes' plotting time you were then required to visit 75% of those points and correctly answer the question within 2 hours to be classified as a finisher.
Odometer figures were taken at the start and finish, so in the event of a tie, the crew who had completed it in the shortest distance were deemed to be the winners.
They were great fun, and despite sounding a bit like a treasure hunt you'd have to push quite hard to make the finish. Many's the time we came back with bits of scenery attached to the car. Harder than you'd think!
Anyway I'd definitely be up for it, I'll have a word with the lads in the rally team and see if we can field a couple of cars. NOT the Sunbeam. ;D

I may be up for this. and the 8pm-2am would be best i think. Although my Jetta would probably be too low to compete Will have to wait until something is set in stone then work out if i can book it off/if I'm free/a passenger/if i can afford to travel to location then compete But I'm more than interested!

BrianD, thats loosely where i want to go with this ... just keep it away from being a treasure hunt. What you used to do sounds a blast!

This sounds like teh orsumzzz indeed. I'd be totally up for it, probably as driver as my map-reading is a bit hit-and-miss at the best of times. I might even bosh some GTI alloys onto SWMBO's 205 diseasel and run that for a laff ;D

I'm getting pretty excited by the thought of this! If it's the end of October then there might even be a possibilty of me having the car, money, time and petrol in the tank... stranger things have happened!

Sounds interesting, but where do insurance companies draw the line with regards to time trials and when does it become a 'rally' in the eyes of the law?
Not questioning you as i'm sure you're in the know, but having taken part in motor club organised events and seen what can go wrong I'd quite like to make sure I'm on the right side of the law should something go wrong as the police take a very large interest in groups of motor enthusiasts travelling through the countryside at speed...

That's why it's probably best not to time it at all. Even our Navigationals had to be run on MSA Permits with all crews having to sign on to use the MSA's insurance scheme.
