should we put up a poll on top of this thread to sort out which ride we use.
ill suggest ovlov 240(would the turbobricks crowd help out) mk2 cavalier meastro(for the anything has potential side of things) bmw 320(cos pogs already got about 6 lol) laurel( cos spottedlaurels already offered and its a freeby)
if we decide early on what were using then maybe we can all look out for bits and bobs to use on it.ill glady give up a couple of hours showtime for some spraying and spennering.(we did the mazda wagon of doom paintjob in about 5 hours includind rebuildind most of the car in plod ;D ;D)

I think roller painting would solve a lot of these issues - no risk of spraying someone elses car / child, less fumes, no gazeebo apparatus, and the car can be worked on whilst it's being painted... May not get the finish but a) I'd imagine we'd be going for something like NATO paint, and b) we're not going for any sort of concours finish anyhow. JM2pW

If we paint it don't forget we'll need plenty of news paper and masking tape as well.

Someone mentioned stencils earlier, i think this would be a great idea as they could be prepared beforehand, to make something in the vein of that spectacularly ratty green Rx-7. Only take a few seconds to apply.

If it gets finished, it shoud go down the quarter btw ;D In that case make sure the paint is actually on there properly, plenty of primer and a few coats slapped on and rub the old paint down properly. My grandad once had a knackered old late Morris Minor he got on the cheap at the Glasgow car auctions, partly because it had damaged front wing, so he went to his mate at the local scrappie and got a replacement wing, only it was green and his car was grey. He sprayed the wing once it was on the car one weekend, then we set off in it to the town centre to get some other bits and pieces the car needed, only when he put his foot down on the main road, you could see the paint flying off the wing in little flakes and disappering in a cloud of grey dust behind the car! ;D Evidently we should've rubbed the old paint down a little more! ;D ;D I now have the image in my mind of a Volvo 240 strorming down the quarter mile with noticeably un-camo paint and clouds of green, black and khaki paint swirling behind it! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Need a big Tarpaulin Lay it down and stake it then do the build on top of that. That way any rust, filler, paint etc is contained Roller don't Spray Glossing rollers will give you a smooth enough finish I can bring small compressor and Touch up gun for stencilling / Airbrushing if needed Cutting coils on the day is OK...... Anyone borrow a Paddy Saw ? ;D Tape the area off First aid Kit and Fire extinguisher Anyone working on the car signs a disclaimer too If you skin your knuckles its down to you Chevette would be cheap and easy to do...... look at Racers Blue one 4x100 PCD RWD (Weld up the diff for some sideways action I have a spare to do that if needed) Suspension is double wishbone front and coil rear and easy enough to get out I think a Rat Racer/ Nato look would be doable on the day But I like the Idea of Crazy Bozo style...... How about that silver triupmh aclaim or Rover 216 that was posted a while back...... In Retirement gold or something ;D Plywood/Filler Front Splitter, Crazy arches rivetted on Oil cooler hung out front, Those Crazy Star Exhaust pipes, Big Air horns ;D Thing is no-one has done proper Bozo over here yet and this is the "Uk Spiritual home" of it so we should introduce it to the rest of the UK Scene ;D The Classic boys would hate it too and would not get the fun and irony at all ;D Just my 2 pennorth Cheers Dom

I say do a ratted Boso Volvo 240. Slammed on wide steelies with boso arches would look the danglies. Also, see about getting some "sponsorship" from parts companies. Either cash or parts/tools would be cool. Parts would stay on the car, tools could be returned at the end of the show. It doesn't take much in parts, maybe gearknob or window tint film and aplain old fashioned style mountney wheel. Just simple bolt on stuff.

Reading through some of this I'm a tad concerned just what kind of image you're trying to give off.
I love the idea of a slammed Volvo turbo on the right wheels and some choice retro touches.
But cut springs and roller painting? Surely this is supposed to be an exercise in proving that anything can look good if done right, not one in how you can make a grungy looking car in 5 mins from left over garage contents.
Sorry if that sounds too negative a thing to bring to the conversation I'm just concerned about what people will think and wether or not this 'Blue Peter mentality' really represents Retro Rides.
There are some amazing ebay scouters here, combine that with the extensive retro knowledge and some genuine open minded thinking and I think there's enough talent here to come up with something really special.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I think we've established that we CAN do it and we have a bunch of options.
We've got to work out Who and How much... I think the How Much is more important than anything right now as that dictates what we buy to start with.

I'm just pointing out that often on here the main reason people justify complaints towards Max Power type cars is due to the lack of workmanship involved - I think that can work both ways.

Certainly,.. which is why we have to be careful to get it right, and not leave an impression of something rubbish and just cobbled together in a day.. even if it is being cobbled together in a day Careful planning is good... Nick has set out a good brief for sure. Once it is know what is going to be worked on, we can work out what to do to it and who is going to do what and when to make sure quality is maintained I'm definatly favouring the rolelr route as just about anyone can do something then, and it is a lot less messy than spraying. Or we get a car that just needs a T-cut

Roller-painting This stuff would be quick and give a decent result. High-density foam rollers (or 'gloss' rollers) give a decent finish. *n
