Like so. I know hairnet had a 2.0 (I think) - what was it like to drive and how do they go? I was a really nice 323 go for 800 on Ebay today, which seems quite reasonable. I'm just looking around for alternatives for a Sprint for the time being, in case I can't find one I like as I have the urge to purchase. And no damned 360's ;D And, yes, it was that sexeh red one in RC that got me thinking ;D Wanna make one like that ;D

The german TuV did investigate the car as so many disappeared through hedges backwards..... but it's more the case of errant owners not respecting the car's nature.... anything rwd on primitive soggy (standard) suspension with buckets of torque & bhp is gonna be scary if you get it wrong. Slow in, fast out. That's all you need to know. Oh and uprate the suspension & you'll be OK. Buy one at once to achieve legend status.

I will remember that.
I've found something more interesting, in the mean time. More later.

wern't they banned in certain european contries because of the tail happy handling AFAIK the only car that was banned for this was the big Tatra, which bacame known as CZ's secret weapon! They were very popular with German Army officers in the early '40s due to the good performance but when the back broke away (which with a powerful rear engined car isn't hugely surprising), it was very difficult to catch, & there were enough fatal accidents for the German High Command to forbid their officers from driving them.

I've driven one if that counts. Had to road test one after the pillock who owned if mounted a kurb and smashed the ally sump,Got it welded, put it back on and took it for a spin to get the oil hot to see if it leaked. Went like a scalded cat, sounded brilliant and handled really well, I'd get one

Nah, you can't have a 4 pot beemer, that just doesn't make sense! I had an E30 318 4 cylinder. It was so slow it was killing! Looked nice though

Agreed the 318i isn't that quick (but not terrible either) and a 316 on a carb is so grim it makes you wanna commit hari-kari.... But I love my 16-valve 318iS. OK, so there's not the torque you get on a 325i but it's nearly as quick, much less thirsty and handles better too as there's not such a big lump over the front wheels. It seriously pwns my bro's 320i on the twisties & the straights. Although he whoops my ass in the comfort / lazy driving stakes. The only BMW I'd want to replace it with would be an M3

lewisk78 in da house: Has anyone ever had a 323i
In the early 80's I had two of those, this was in the begining of the import flood of German cars to Sweden, we went down to Germany to pick up a 450SEL 6.9 for a friend and at the dealer there was a nice 323 Baur converible, the prize was right so I bought it, after getting home with it I did never like the look of it top down and a girlfriend (hairdresser) bought it from me. Next trip to Germany scored me a verry rough 3.0 CSL and a perfect 323i in black with the full gold (remeber it was the 80's) Alpina sticker & rim trim, the car was a beaute but after two weeks of driving it on the streets of Stockholm and old geezer rearended me at a redlight, the car was written of by the insurance company and that was the last of my German imports.....
The 323i was a nice car but had some serious rust problems, no surface rust but under and the exhaust was a major problem (expensive too) with these cars, reliability was absolutely NO problem and performance was up to par (at that time) so a decent 323i in Alpina or Schnitzer look could be a perfect retro daily driver.....
DP says: Never been a big BMW fan but the 2002 and 3.0 coupes are cool.....

Nah, you can't have a 4 pot beemer, that just doesn't make sense! I had an E30 318 4 cylinder. It was so slow it was killing! well what do you expect when you buy an m40 engined e30 (prusume yours is the same as the pic)? bmw made a new engine and lost about 10bhp m10 engines are real good motors, a kind of pinto equivalent. back to 323's, they're a bit like mondeo's in that you drive one and it feels like it won't pull the skin off a rice pudding. then drive another that goes like a scalded cat. most of the 323's we've had at work, we stripped for spares many moons ago. some one told me that the cars have "funny" handling because of the engine weighing too much and sitting too far forward. so why did alpina build the b6 2.8 e21, that had the m30 big six in? mr bovensiepen is well known for his exacting standards and would not of put the hefty six in if it would have upset the cars handling. some people are full of rubbish when it comes to bmws. like retro cars saying four cylinder e21's rev far too much for the speed they do. tosh! my boss had a 315 (low comp. 316, with a 4 speed box) and cruised it at 80 mph for 280 miles (long ago in the mists of time). it didn't rev hard and returned a respectable mpg figure too. e21s rock, plain and simple.
