nice one, the last MOT for the 1303 cost £500, no welding needed but we did get the front dropped for that as well, it needed new strut inserts and the lowering springs just fell down the shocks

Paul £900 quid, Bloody hell, What went wrong, about time to invest in a welder. I had a quote last year for the GT for a hole the same size as a 50Pence, it was £250, I mean what a rip off. So i Spent the 80 for a new sill and replaced the lot for free. To only find out at another test center that it was not a faliure, but at least it done and you cant tell.
Always a Concern of mine esp if i need it doing but have no time to di it myself. £250 was steep for a small hole and they would of not sprayed it.

Eeesh. MOT's. I have to get one on the Volvo. The thing that p*sses me off is that they got rid of the free re-test. Now testers can just fail a car knowing that they'll at least get another £35 - £45 quid for another test Well done on getting the ticket 104ZS. I just hope they don't find anything horrific under the Volvo - tis not the weather for welding

You still get your free re-test if you let the testing garage bend you over and shaft you royally from behind do any necessary repair work. How f*cked up is that?

You still get your free re-test if you let the testing garage bend you over and shaft you royally from behind do any necessary repair work. How f*cked up is that? Yeah, if it leaves the premises they have to do a full test again i think. Anyone know of any garages that do a "pre-MOT" inspection? Mine cost me £0 ... and no advisorys .. only car I've ever owned that didn't cost a thing at MOT (other than the fee) ... Same here (apart from 2 advisories) - my cortina passed this week "is my car ready?" "yep" "what did it fail on?" "it didn't, it passed" *thud* ok, ok, so it had only done just over 1300 miles since it's last one.

You need to get a garage that you trust. When I picked up the ZS they said it had also failed on the fact that the bonnet was propped up (not properly secured0 and the sun visors are stuck in the down position behind the cage). "So we unbolted the bonnet, fixed it down properly and removed the sunvisors, tested it and put it all back afterwards" "Did you!!" "No of course not, because that would be a waste of our time, we just passed it on those items" Ditto rally style mud flaps, they are a fail as they stick out the sides. sensible garage. Well as sensible as any place currently storing a 1938 DeSoto body and chassis on their roof can be!!

HO ho ho ...you English and your "welding"... ;D ;D ;D Don't you really meant to say "rebuilding"? or is it "resurrecting" . I really admire a nation that can bring terminal cases back from the brink of oblivion with judicious applications of the ubiquitous MIG...( that's welder ,not the fighter) And turn out this.....

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

I must take my Mk1 Golf along for an MOT soon, not sure if it'll pass though without sorting the bottoms of the front doors which are rusted out? Maybe if I gaffer tape them so there aren't sharp edges? It's nothing structural I suppose? Also, if you have a brake servo fitted, does it have to be connected up and working 'cos it's not at the moment, brakes still work ok... well, as good as early Golf brakes ever do...

I would just pipe it up just in case, Mine has the servo but its pants and does not work as well as it should. I guess as long as it can pass the break test.
The doors i would Tape up, ok its not a weakness point but if the tester is an A*se then he will fail you on the sharpe edges

I do intend to get the manifold off and re-drill but I want an MOT soon and not sure I'll get to that first. Noted about the doors - gaffer tape time!

Mine has now swallowed about a year of restoration work which was just going to be the sills to get it through the MOT. It's scary what you find when you go looking for rust!

Anyone know of any garages that do a "pre-MOT" inspection? Watt's in Hereford. Truck garage, but they'll do a pre MOT, (full MOT test). Will write down everything that needs doing for a pass. 25 quid!! Not bad. (p.s. They'll do cars if you ask em nicely, did my monza)
