Welcome to the forum. Cars over 20 years (classic cars) are always friendly for insurance. Or something like a VW Polo perhaps?

Welcome! Back in 1997, my first car was a Skoda Rapid - a real hoot to drive, cheap(ish) to insure, and at that time hardly anyone loved them so I got it for next to nowt! I did spend a LOT of time fixing it though A clean Mk2 Polo would be cool - there's a lot of cool stuff people have been doing with them (check out www.cleaned.be for inspiration) Or how about a Mk3 Ford Escort? Really nice drive, and easy to mod. Get a champagne one in Ghia trim for extra '80s "glamour"! Or a Mk1 Fiesta (I think NickB has one for sale pretty cheap) As Penski says, it all depends what kind of thing you're into. I tend to go for German cars, or cars from that neck of the woods, because I like the engineering detail you get with them. Maybe you love welding? Go for something Italian or '&0s Japanese! There are sooo many cars to choose from!

The sort of insurance cost i would be willing to pay would be about £1500. For the car around £600-£800. So the car will probably have to have quite a small engine 1.2-1.4.
Thanks Chris

£1500 sounds like a lot for insurance, but then it's a while since I passed my test! I might not get much support here, but I've been thinking about Mk1 Fiat Uno's - where have they all gone?! An Uno ie turbo would be mucho fun - don't know about the insurance though

golf could be a good one, loads of tuning and styling options and you can get a 1.3. its foot to the floor everywhere but the insurance isnt too crippling. Slam it, set of rims, roofrack, and you're ready to go cruising for when the suns out. nice.

I'm not sure but i think the word turbo would push up the insurance.
Is a Clio classed as a retro car??

Is a Clio classed as a retro car?? Personally I don't think they're quite there yet . Then again it's all a matter of opinion - the first Clio must have been launched not long after you were born!

Now this raises an interesting point. To someone 16 or 17 then it is in effect a car from 'the begining of time'. So I have to wounder. It's also nice to see someone younger (I respect theres a few already) willing to mess with older cars and not just drive around in Mummies Saxo !

Peugeot 309 1.6
Cheap as chips, hard working, loads of space to carry your mates and excellent handling.
