Skoda Estelle / Rapid is a good first choice.... tough, tunable & immense fun. Also teaches you respect for a car's handling! I had one as my first car back in the mists of time, excellent device. You say you like hatches so you can't go far wrong with a Mk1 Fiesta (sold mine now ), early Renault 5 or fiat Uno. Pennies to run & you can dress them up cheaply & easily. Mk1/2 Polo's are also crazy cheap & easy to do stuff with. Clio is deffo borderline in my book... a clio williams, yes fine & dandy but a 1.2RN... another 10 years to go i reckon. Also, they are designed for dwarves! Muchos uncomfortable to drive!

i was thinking of an escort mk 2 I hope you've got a very well paid job Silly, silly silly money now for anything with 2 doors. 4-door can still be snaffled for £700 with MoT but be prepared to get well aquainted with the welding wand

Polo's are good solid dependable and unique things, My c reg never let me down and the body was fine. not totally exillarating with 1 litre, but did me for a bit and the non servo'd brakes get you out of the habbit of tailgating and braking late at junctions. Fiesta would be loads of fun IMO but might fall to bits more. of course you could do worse than a chevette, see nightmares' Kadett and racer86' and penski's for inspiration.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Is Japanese stuff still a little more expensive to insure? If so I was also going to suggest Chevette, but otherwise you could pick up a tidy Sunny saloon for £4-500, or something like my Starlet would be good. 3dr ones going for decent money nowadays, but 5dr models like mine still quite cheap.
I'm also in Norfolk, I'll try and bring it along to The Angel next month so you can see if that's your kind of thing. I'll probably be moving it on later this year and possibly already have a taker for it, but if that falls through I may be open to offers.....
Everything I've suggested above is RWD.
If FWD OK and you've an open mind, what about Acclaim? See Ishan's thread in Readers Rides for inspiration.

cool ill see you there.
I'm not 17 for 8 months, so its 2 Early to buy a car. But thanks for the offer. I am just researching at the moment to see what i can get. I am doing this so that when i do choose to buy a car i will know every last detail of it and its competitors. also as i hope to get a retro car it takes a lot more research then a newer car. I have only recently started getting interested in retro cars, so half the cars are new to me as well. This probably sounds a bit stupid though.

Hi and welcome. My first car was an AX, not very retro, but gettin there. If i could go back and have my first car again, i'd get a moggy minor, very cool, and very under rated in my eyes. As NickB said, i think the williams cilo is retro, but i think the rest are still a bit too common to be classed as. How bout a renna 5? Also ya may be scuppered a bit on classic insurance with ya age, alot don't insure under 21s. If ya go for a fezza, get the MK1, i had a MK2 and it was a total pig-dog, horrible thing. I would push you to go older, minors, pops, stuff like that, BUT you will be in a lay-by tryin to fix summit when all ya mates are in the pub, (maybe i'm doing you a disservice, don't know how mechanically ept or inept you are). My reason for goin older, is that alot of young drivers have old polo's and such like that an old uncle found for 'em, and as ya interested in the classics and retro, you should get summit that makes you stand out a bit. But i envy you, when i was your age, i was a big max power freak, even stuck an XR2 kit onto the fezza with "No More Nails" and self tappers, which promptly fell off , wish i'd found my retro love earlier. Good luck with the search and keep us posted of any other inspirational thoughts, also check out the "Readers - Rides" section to get ya mental juices flowing ;D

I wanted a mk2 escort when I was 17/18, but finding a half decent one with a small engine somewhere near me was just about impossible - and thats when I stumbled upon my first car.
Theres a young lad near me who's riding around in a mk2 polo saloon - it looks very cool and these things are frequently overlooked - came with all sorts of engines too
Which insurance company allows named drivers to rack up no-claims bonuses? They might be worth investigating if youre parents have lots or full NCB and you want to get something more 'interesting' shall we say...

Very early Renner 5's are damn cool i reckon, a lot of potential. Bit like this.. In fact i'm selling this one soon, shame you wont be looking for a while yet. ;D Very cheap insurance, even for the 1.4 versions, and they don't go too bad. especially if you cunningly slip in a turbo engine etc etc..
