So it feels like forever since I had time to work on the ride, got lots done today so pretty stoaked! First I took off the door card on the passenger door to takle some dents, I'm no dent doctor but with the wooden handle of a hammer bracing it against the window mech I could slowly but surely work the fair size parking dent down. (I had to do it cos majic Chris kept pointing it out! ) Looks a fair bit smaller but I couldnt get rid altogether. Then I got onto the cam cover n polished it again as speks of rust were appearing, Autosol is the daddy and it's shine is back. Next I stripped the Sub and amp Matt gave me into parts and binned the mdf tube it was in. Finally a job I've been putting off; My drivers seat: Yes, that is a metal bar running down the side!! It was actually suprisingly comfy, but had to be sorted. When I got the car I had a free seat with it the previous owner had aquired, but it's runners didnt fit by litterally 2mm Undeterred I decided the base of mine was ok, and the tops could be swapped, so I split the first seat: Then split the second and slotted on the top, selecting the best headrest too: and back in, my lord it's sooooo much more comfy!! Thats all for now, but I am happy my car is making more progress!! I also should have some bigger front calipers on the way by the end of August and will be able to upgrade from non vented 239mm to vented 256mm discs at the front. (Y) Will get some cheeky cross drilled items while I'm there, then it's time for rear disc setup from a mk2 Gti with a custom handbrake cable. It'll get there. (Y)

the 256 brake upgrade makes wonders to these and mk1 golfs I'm using brembo max discs and ferododooooo ds2500 pads, awesome combo and am seeing some good mileage out of them ( used daily ) and best of all they fit under my SSR splits my old man is using the same set up on his tuned Audi N/A 2.2 5 pot and he loves it

Well, I have 2 spare steelies and a few other bits in the boot, so I expect they are helping, but only a quarter of a tank... I don't think it will stay like this, but my lord I hope it does! Oh, and it looks like I will be able to squeeze in a 5mm spacer each side too! ET15 on an 8" rim anyone? Oh and not at the RR gathering, sorry!

Cheers Yeh made up some stone chip gaurds for the rear arches ages ago, first thing I did, had a couple of chips and didnt want it to get worse. Then the rear window parts got done shortly after the fronts, neatens it up a lot. Plus euro plates, and bootlid graphics. It's getting there! I've got more plans too, giant rubiks cube sub for boot, and I've now also stripped the old spare seats for their covers so I can make up a centre arm rest which matches materials for the interior, stock style but full custom build, will make it up once I'm back at work.

Right, got onto the vinyl tonight, went OK, might need to redo one piece. Want to leave it on for a bit now to see how it weathers and if any comes away. It's pretty thin stuff but that actually helped get it into the tight areas of the trim. The chrome vinyl: Anyways here's the door trim, note how the rear sections are dull in comparison to the real chrome. Close up: Then the close up with one section done: and the rear part done: Now the other side: Lower section done: Lower compared to upper: Upper done and dusted: (This side went better in the garage light!) Compare to front chrome, it's a pretty close match, from over a foot away I doubt many would tell: For my next trick I am gonna give the windscreen front and rear surrounds a go!

Then bigger brakes: 256mm spec (circa golf gti 16v, only these calipers are from an audi - girling g60 ones - NOT FROM A G60!) Then won me a nice wheel on ebay: It was tired so again it went onto the lathe for a tidy up (6 man hours later I am happy with the result!) Polished the centre: Wheel on lathe: Finished: Splashed out on a polished boss (fooking pricey!) and done ready to go on: Built a sub box: Battery will be hidden underneath... New Rad: New original stock mirror to replace a cracked one:

Clear indicators went on: Wheels got refurbed! ;D On: Blacked the trim to remove tired chrome paint above and below the grill: bought a 1.8 block: Leather interior from an 80 cabrio (circa 90's model) 4" chopped and welded out of the subframes later and they fit! Back seat will be retrimmed eventually but not done that yet...

Sub box finished: (now fitted) Clocks arrived: and in: Tinted wingmirrors beige to rid of a blue tint one, match the feel of the car more now: DZ head bought and washed: (it's the same as a Gti digifant head and cam - bigger valves and better cam) Block got a bath: Disaster as box broke!: Block out: Painted: Sump painted: Gaskets arrived: Getting there, I've now started the swap and the car is sorn. Engine strip has begun, from: To: And thats it! See told you I hadnt updated in a while! lol. Engine swap is coming along, new pics to follow as I do it. Basically it will be a DS engine with a DZ head, 1.8. Aim is to run R6 bike carbs and get the engine bay painted while I'm at it. I'll also be fitting my front coilovers once I've cut and lowered the damper tubes to allow for more travel (it's sat at the bottom of the dampers at present! ) And the whole lot will be hammerited/powdercoated, subframes the lot. Then it will all go back in. Hoping it will be back on the road by summer 2012 for the RetroShow, tho from the outside it will look little different to what it did this year!

Hey man, i'd like to say this car is absolutley LOVELY, if ever a car was modified tastefully this is it!!! Your attention to detail is top-notch. I could sit and look at it for hours.
The only thing I would change is the europlates, for me they're 'tainted goods' by being the default fitment by scene sheep to their hundreds of half-arsed rat-look golfs back in the day. You need some UK plates either with that font that was unique to early 80's VW's or some pressed alu ones with the old pre-2001 font.
Good luck with the engine swap!!! I will think of this car whenever I see one of these old things on the bay.

Agreed, a great looking project, don't see many of the 80's 80's around any more.
Interested in that chrome vinyl wrap you used on the window surrounds, how hard wearing is it? Do you reckon it could be used to re-chrome headlamp bowls that have gone yellow, or would the heat from the bulbs burn it off?

The vinyl is ok for exterior stuff yes, seems to have survived plenty of car washes! However curves are a real pain with it, there are a couple of spots I really struggled on and therefore wouldn't reconmend if for a headlamp covering inside. I'd just get it re-chromed mate! I plan to get mine done at some point.
