I found Retro-Rides from a link Wagoneer posted on the VOC forum :-) I think my father is to blame for my love of cars - when I was young, there were always copies of The Automobile or Motorsport lying aound, and when I was 5, he bought this: (Yes, that is me ) My Amazon was bought by him when I was 13 and was passed down to me nearly 4 years ago - it has been in my family longer than any other car we've had. My brother is a biker (also dad's fault) & between the three of us, one day we will rebuild this: Top is Plan A, middle is Plan B, and bottom is how it was when it was new:

My dad was a total motorhead, sadly, he passed away in 99... Only 45 years old And my mom is kind of an anti-old cars person, hell, she only know about my Rekord D and Ascona B. ;D The ones she don't know of is: 2 Rekord C`s, a Golf 1 GTi and a Mitsu Galant Turbo 2000 ;D

My dad always used to have old cars, but really just because he couldn't afford a newer one. Me and my brother got into old cars from our uncles - their enthusiasm kept us going when we brought back yet another old clunker that nobody wanted!

my dad had a lot of cars i like but, that was back when he was younger and they werent necessarily special cars then.
since ive been alive hes only had a citroen visa, ax and a ford focus.
so i don't think they are necessarily in my familys blood

my inspiration came from my late dad, my late uncle and mrsigmas dad. between the three of them they had some wicked machinery. unfortunately my dad and my uncle both died of cancer before id unleashed my best stuff. my mam always used to tut and say "now what have you bought?, what would your dad say?" knowing him, he'd say "cool" shes fine about it all now, and insists on test driving everything i get, even the hearse. ;D

guy in da house: Do retro cars run in ure family?
Not really Retro, dad bought a new car every 2 or 3 years, always nice top of the line modells but not Retro. Mom always had a Bug, Polo or Golf some years old but not really Retro....
guy in da house: If not who got u in to retro rides?
Always forced my parents to take me to the Stockholm Hot Rod Show from the age of 5, at 14 I built my first custom moped and with it won first price at The Stockholm Hot Rod Show, every year after that i showed a new motorcyle custom or chopper at Hot Rod Show and when I turned 18 I started to ride choppers with "the dangerous dudes with vests" and the need to compete at the shows died. At that time I got into drag racing and street racing with cars and split my time between those for some years untill starting to build Hot Rod & Kustom 2 & 4wheelers in California.....
DP says: Always loved Hot Rods & Kustoms with 2 and 4 wheels.....

The list of My dads stuff is pretty endless, starting out with Mini's, bubble cars, progressing on to batchelor styling Capri mk1's and Mk2 Cortinas, all before my time. Volvos dominated the 80's, land rovers the 90's with loads of tat inbetween buying selling. He rebuilt a smashed up Scimitar and half built a Jensen Healey. nothing that retro now but tools around in old vans. there is loads and loads over the years. I spent a lot of time making, and breaking curse word in the garage and riding round in old Marinas, Maxi's and general tat.
I loved the custom scene too, really inspired by it, still am. My dad is an hypocrit now and recons i should own a modern Diesel! seems surprisingly happy with my MR2 which is the first one he has been involved with.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

My dad always had old cars. Mainly beacause we couldn't afford anything newer, just like Benzboys dad. I used to love the old Rover P6's, SAAB 99's and Cortinas he had over the years, that's what got me in to old cars. There's something special about seeing your dad pollish the ports on a rover p6 head on the kitchen table, happy days ;D

Friends and family could not afford new vehicles ("so you made the best of what you've got" etc.) plus involvement by them with the odd 1940's classic in the 1970's got me interested into all vehicles of all sorts from Motorcycles to Tanks and electric cars to Hot Rods.

My dad has had more cars in my liftime than I can recall. The first one I remember was a 2.6 SD1. Loved that car, although it developed a leak, and turned into a greenhouse before being swapped for a 1600 cortina with a cherry bomb. That was cool He has had many retro fords, volvo's, renaults, a wolseley hornet that I am restoring (kind of), and an old audi 80 and 100. The 100 was the 5 cylinder engined one, which I also loved. Memorable ones are the 1600 aircooled vw type 25, which was painfully slow, and the 2.8 Granada with the X pack. Mainly owned them because it is all he could afford, and worked on them because he had to, rather than wanting to, but he is more into modern, more reliable motors now. However it is the 70's and 80's cars that I remember as a kid, and these that I like the most. There are loads more he has owned too, but I honestly can't remember them all.

When I was a kid my Dad and his mate repaired and serviced cars 'on the side'... I can still remember my Mum taking me out to the garage to say goodnight to him... . It's a standing joke in our family that I didn't know he was my Dad, I thought he was 'a man that lived in the garage...' ;D

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

My dad is definately not into cars - changes them every 2-3 years even if he doesn't need to - give him some wood tho and he can make/repair anything!!!!
Initially I was into bikes so didn't do too many older cars when I first started driving..... I did a few just not as many as a lot of my mates
But my late uncle ran a car garage (Bawdsey, Suffolk) and restored older cars & bikes - I spent lots of time there - the cars and bikes he restored are still in the showroom on the main road thro the village - I think there are about 6 in total 1938 BMW 320? Escort Mexico and a few others that I can never remember - it's sort of a memorial to him now.
Anyway I used to get in his way a bit as a kid so picked up a bit of info on the way - I wouldn't say that I was into retro cars either - just that the cars I am enthusiastic about have slipped into the retro catagory and as I don't like modern stuff at all I guess I'm happy about that...
Also I guess that the cars I got ferried around in as a child leave lasting impressions

think it must be in the blood! I remember we restored an MGBGT when i was very young, remember my dad having an early cav sri, then an MG Montego, MG Maestro, my dad had some sweet Rovers before i was about, a P6 v8 , an SD1, a couple of triumph vitesses and a gt6 mk2, then my brother got a gt6 mk3 when he was 19, so i just felt i had to join the gang when i could afford more than a heap, so got my mk1 golf gti

my dad owned a few vitesses, cortina mk1, mk1 cav, dolimite, mk1 fiesta... and shared various old cars to get to work in with mates when he was an aprentis... but at the time they wernt realy any older than 10years i don't suppose.
My bro had a mini as a first car, that got me hooked, then my dad decided to restore a sicmitar about 6-8years ago, which confirmed my love for cars.
now we have abit of a monopoly on reliant cars:
dad has a scimitar older brother has a scimtiar ss1 i have a kitten and my other bro has a mx5.
and thats just whats on the road. its very much a family thing!

my dad has never really been a car person. He tells stories of mini and ford anglia ownership though.
He doesnt 'get' retro ownership/restoration though. On Friday i was facing a weekend of working on the 411, had tashas polos water pump to change, the benz needed rear brake pads and an oil change, and then the benz needs a new driveshaft. He calls me and asks what I'm up to this weekend and asks "why do you do this to yourself all the time?", all i could say was that i enjoy it and that he would never understand. He laughed, sighed, and said "no, i really wont!" lol. He thinks I'm crazy for building the bug too.
I must have been into cars from real young though, cos from the age of about 7 or 8 i remember playing a game to pass journeys where i would count all numbers of each make of car that passed us/we passed. (Ford always won lol)
I then worked at a newsagents from the age of 13, and remember seeing street machine on the shelves. I always looked at the pics, i don't remember reading the words. They always kinda seemed unaccessible to me for some reason. But i loved 'em!
Then when i was 16 my best mate got a bug ... and that was it, i was hooked on vw's. That car was heroic, it got us around at about 80mph everywhere, did trips to newquay, took us on many fishing trips and down some nasty tracks around them .....

I'm the first car nut on my side of the family, and my folks just don;t get it at all. My uncle worked for ford his entire life, and now his son custom builds minis, but i've only met my uncle once, and that was after he'd retired so i don;t recon there was an influence there. I think it's more through my mates than my blood.
