Since I'm hopeless at electrical faultfinding, does anyone have an idea as to what could be causing the following: 1) Only noticed this last night, but one of the headlights on the Amazon is much dimmer than the other, and becomes even more dim whem I switch to main beam. Btw, the lights are halogen units & less than a year old. Loose connection or a dodgy bulb perhaps? 2) Intermittant problem with the heater fan which started ages ago but is now off more than it's on.... The symptoms are a) does nothing at all, b) no air, & squealing noise or c) works Is this likely to be a wiring fault, or a fan motor fault? I'm missing the sauna levels of heat that it normally kicks out! Cheers!

paulh in da house: Is this likely to be a wiring fault
The headlights, do you have fiberglass or verry rusty fenders??? If so check the grounding and on all old cars make sure all ground connections are in good shape, the ground between the motor and frame/body is often a culprit.....
DP says: Go over all contacts with a good contact cleaner and you'll most likely cure your problems....

Check the multi-plug on the headlamp bulb - it's common for them to corrode and make a bad connection.
With the heater motor check the brushes aren't sticking as well as the obvious checking for power at the motor.

Been out all day, so haven't been able to do anything yet, but when driving home, at first the offside light was dim, but by the time I got home, it was much brighter.... this isn't the first electrical glitch that seems to have fixed itself!! I'll give it all a proper check over tomorrow, especially as I want the heater working!

Light sounds like a duff connection/earth.
Heater fan sounds like it may be the motor assembly starting to pack up. Bearings die and they get very stiff to turn. Can you get a hand to the motor? If so, when turned on and it does nothing, see if its getting warm. If so, may be its getting current, but the fan assembly is sticking for whatever reason. Having said that, may turn out to be nothing more than another bad connection.

ooops forgot to say anything useful in my last post the heater noise you describe sounds just like my old polo one - it'd be fine, then it'd start to make a squealing noise and the air would stop blowing through. i never found the cause (sorry!) but i did work out that something had worked loose on a spindle or something, as it started squealing under acceleration pretty reliably. as the fan is totally electrically driven i figured it must be something like a fan sliding off a bearing, or catching on the surroung. a quick dab on the brakes usually stopped it.

paulh in da house: especially as I want the heater working! Some years back I went to Iceland to pick up a horse and this vetrinarian I hooked up with had an old Volvo 145 wagon where the heater did not work so she put 6 värmeljus on the dashboard and lit them up, it worked just fine during the summer (it's cold over there), I'm just happy I did not have to drive around with her during the winter. Man could she drink, those Icelandic women are just so wild (and quite beautyfull), we spent a couple of nights drinking Black Death and eating pickled shark and the headache the morning after can not be described...... Don't know the English word for värmeljus.... DP says: Hells Angels on Iceland are called The Frogs and always acts as Security for Bjork.....
