I'd like an old Saab very muchly - a dream project would be an old 96 with 2.3 turbo running gear... OOF! I reckon a roof-chop would go really well on that shape, lag some satin black paint on the body... I'm salivating...

Mini-Mercury ledsled-esque... It would work so well, it could come with a five year, unlimited mileage king of the bad-asses warranty. See Toms Volvo for inspiration

I had one! At the same time there were a few others too. There was a picture in SM from a Nats report with three together: The yellow wagon, which I think was the one that got pink scallops later, mine (above) and a yellow saloon. There was another yellow estate that was a project car for a car stereo magazine (I think) and had hydraulics and a proper paint job. There was a yellowy-green estate with a weird interior that had a reader's rides slot in SM - which IIRC belonged to a guy called Dom from Billericay, who I think also had links with a trio of slammed Dyanes that turned up at Bug Jam one year! Blimey, there was loads wasn't there! I nearly forgot the purple and silver flamed convertible one there too!

...and another - a few years befor my time and I only saw it once but recent ex-pat and ex-editor of CC Kev Elliot built a 'chopped 95 called the 'Paving Slab' a good while ago. ps. My green one was sold after it proved to have an apetite for engines (those V4s are truly horrid! ). I'm not sure what happened to it after that.

Yes, yes and yes...! I remember yours, and for a few years in the mid to late 90s there always seemed to be one or two at a general show (Nats, Wheels Day)... So where are they? Did they die because of old age, lack of use and nobody took up the mantle because it had been done? My other theory is that at the time they were 20-25yrs old, same as the Ami's etc and were cheap to mod with great results. Just in the same way as the Acclaim that was on here recently, or any other early 80s tin. Rogers V8 was a full house custom with a Rayvern kit on it, something like that must still exist.
Just wondered like... ;D

Never realised Kev had one, hmmm, the V4 was wibblepoo too. I had one in my first Transit, never again...

What's the deal with these coupe's? Were they factory jobs or customs? Never seen them before!

In 1988 I went to a Custom Car organised weekend show at East of England Showground, I’m sure I remember a heavily chopped and primered Saab van (ex-estate?) there, along with some other cars sporting a similar look. Might have a pic at home.
Also got a very vague memory of a customised 99 from the late 70’s/early 80’s that I’ve seen in old mag’s.
I like the look of really early 99s with the skinny bumpers etc.

There was a 99 around in the 70's with big box arches called 'Northern Lights', I belive...
|
|
... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

They're both customs by the same guy, roof chops and a lot of metal work... I'll try and dig out the guys name and site, Ekstrom or something i think it was. True the original is gorgeous, but imagine it slammed on billet 18in solid disc rims, a la Cadzilla with a similar paint hue and crocodile low back trimmed interior... oooh. ;D

Looks like after 18 years I'd got confused! Somehow I'd transposed the Type 3's primer and van sides with the Saab. After seeing these I thought for many years that a late 70's Datsun 280C or 240L would look good very low with black primer, scallops and moon discs. Still do....
