right, ive been having agg finding out what thread these bolts are all week basically, i need 3 starter motor bolts. they 'seem' to be 3/8 UNC thread, but also feel a little bit loose. they go all the way in, but are a bit wriggly compared to how it should be. i don't want to tighten it too much as its an alloy bellhousing and will round easy its for a mk1 escort rs2000 bellhousing btw.......... question is, are there anything near the 3/8 UNC thread that will fit better? or even better if anyone knows the correct bolts that go into the starter holes of the rs2000 bellhousing (mk1, alloy jobbie) and they arent M10 thanks in advance

I'd say it is a 3/8" UNC as mine are and I remember them being the same on my bro's Mk1. 3/8" is about 9.5mm so there's no way an M10 would go in and the pitch is completely different. Have you tried tightening them to see if they all nip up ok? Double sure you've got 3/8" UNC bolts with the 9/16" heads there and not M8's? It's an easy one to mix up!
Only other thing that springs to mind is maybe there were helicoil inserts in there to stop the aluminium thread stripping out. If the inserts have wound themselves out then the thread is essentially the same, just a bit bigger.

ive got me ol man to get me some 7/16 with the same pitch as the 3/8's.
they are def 3/8 UNC as i got them from a wise man who owns the fastenings shop down the road (he's like a hermit who knows EVERYTHING about nuts, bolts, screws and so on)
anything i can use to make the threads a bit tighter?

Have you tried thread tape? I've had a roll of it for years so I have no idea where you'd get the stuff from now, but it tightens up the threads if things feel a bit loose / stretched.

7/16's seem to be the same too :S
cant i put a helicoil back into the holes? would this make it a bit tighter?

If you have a Helicoil kit then I'm sure you can wind another one in. As has been said, if the insert has come out then the thread size is going to be a bit on the baggy side.
As a side-note, I've never used PTFE tape on any bolts that need torquing up to any extent - not sure how successful that'd be...

Sounds like a helicoil job, are the threads stripped at all or do they look ok?
The only possibiliys are M10 or 3/8 unc/unf. Unless someones come along and bodged it with a BSW thread or somthing like that but i doubt it (BSW=UNC tho almost iirc).
Buy yourself a set of thread guages, a very valuble tool when working on old motors! Have you attualy measured the hole? that might be a good idea too

Buy yourself a set of thread guages, a very valuble tool when working on old motors! Are these readily available, eg at halfords (there's one 5 mins from work)?

I think you'd overtighten with PTFE tape so beware. Another option might be to drill the holes out to 10mm and tap with an M12. It sounds most like someone has either overtightened the bolts and stretched the threads or the bolts have come undone (common) and the starter has flapped about and stretched the holes. I'm going to ask on the Anglia forum to find out myself, I think it's unlikely they came with inserts in the threads the more I think about it.

i would have retapped it if it was off the car, but its all in and done at the moment. i think ill just tighten it with caution, with a load of loctite in. failing that ill take it out and retap it

They`ll be M10 ;D 3/8 unc and M10 are really similar in thread form, I would check if I were you From doing Formula fords, IIRC the crossflow was all unf/unc wheras the pinto was metric ;D HTH Dom
