Now this might seem a little bit odd, but i've been having a browse of the galleries recently and i'm loving the safari windows on the front of VW buses. For example; (Hope no-one objects to me using these pics!!) Anyhoo, I quite fancied making Safari windows for the rear (side) windows on my golf. They would only be used when stationary (otherwise i'm guessing the wind would rip the swines right off...). How tricky would this be to do? I've not seen these in the flesh on a van so i'd be interested how they work, and how easy it is to convert a non opening window appature to take them.

They were a factory option on Splitties, and you can buy repro-versions of the kit new...

Imp saloons had safari windows on the back as standard! ;D Seriously though, to be honest I'm not sure how you'd manage something like that on the rear side windows of a Golf but I'm sure it's possible with some re-engineering, do you mean that they would open up the way like the split screen camper ones, or that open at the back like most opening rear/side windows?

They are unbelievably cool! Don't forget though, they leak like a curse word on the front of most vans

I don't know about the mechanics of it, but Hauppisch made opening back window kits for Golfs years ago. They're extremely pricey secondhand, but they hinge in the more "conventional" way - ie like on a Mini or whatever. Interesting idea though

There was a company in the UK (Brasscraft?) that made a Safari kit for a Beetle 'screen. Looked a bit weird though!

If you have a 'Safari'/opening/lift up front window/screen am I right in assuming you don't need Windscreen 'washers'. **Asks this question because this 'situation' raises it's head with classic military vehicles every so often**

If you have a 'Safari'/opening/lift up front window/screen am I right in assuming you don't need Windscreen 'washers'. I think that is correct as I vaguely recall reading it in the MOT manual not that long ago. Can't see the frame very clearly, but the screen on this not only folded flat on the bonnet, but when the hood was up, it could also be hinged open from the top!!

A friend of mine has a '53 Kombi... it was cheaper for him to buy and fit safari windows than it was to try and find, and then buy a wiper motor and the spindles...

This is my favorite pic of one Done as a German staff car (note 'norteck' blackout driving light on wing as fitted to all German military vehicles in WW2)
